Just wondering if there is a setter only specific camp that you would recommend for U16 elite setter.  She is from Canada and is getting some interest from some top schools in the US and would like to attend a camp to further develop her skills.

Sports Performance

Sports Performance in the Chicago area (closer to Canada :-)) also does (or used to do) setter camps. The two (Sports Performance and Long Beach) teach different styles of setting, but both do a great job with their camps.

Thanks for the information. We are from Vancouver, BC so California is actually a much better option for us. We were hoping to do the U wash camp but its full.

Another Take

Most of the setter specific camps are not worth the money.  Instead, focus on the all around camps run by the colleges your daughter is most interested in.

My dd has been going to Dave Rubio in Tucson Advanced camp since she was 11 years old, last year she went to setters positional camp.

And it was sooooo "Worth the Money" she came back with skills 2 years out if she had not gone. 1s 31s 6s, it was crazy.

If she were to go to another it would be sports performance Setters Academy, TAWA had some one write an article on it last year.

If full in Illinois they have one in Austin this year.

Debbie Green-lbsu

If Debbie Green (former Olympian, CSULB coach) is coaching it at Long Beach state the camp is worth it. Either way, make sure the next 2 years are spent playing for a setting coach running a fast offense. That alone will prepare your DD for college ball. If you don`t, the camp wont matter much. Your DD should play all the time, getting the most experience on the court with hitters, at the highest level she can.

Kinda surprised that no one has mentioned the Stanford Advanced Setter's camp yet.  Absolutely brilliant camp, with John Dunning running every minute of it.  One problem is that it's limited to about 80 girls and sells out pretty much every year within one day of the start of signup in February (in other words, way too late to get in this year).

Having said all that, the equivalent money spent on a series of quality private lessons might easily be more valuable.  Not nearly as fun, though.

Stanford Advanced Setter Camp

I was wondering if anyone would mention the Stanford Advanced Setter camp.

John Dunning was terrific and very, very good with the girls.  The highlight of the camp was Cassidy Lichtiman rembering the name of each and every girl by memory with 100% accuracy after only one day;  it was amazing.

The only issue with this camp was that many of the girls were clearly new to the setter position and could in no way be considered Advanced.

True, some of them weren't terribly experienced, but there were many who were extremely talented.  A couple of times I wandered over to watch one of the "regular" volleyball camps and saw a huge difference in quality.  Out of several big name college camps over the years, the Stanford Advanced Setters Camp was by far the strongest collection of talent.

DD attended the Sports Performance camp this summer. It is 9-days long and they workout 7 hours a day... it is grueling. There are 120 kids in the gym and she thought only 4-5 were in over their head. It was interesting to stop in and watch, as the gym was so quiet... nothing but clean setting and no balls hitting the floor.

DD was tired afterwards (no AC in gym and 100+ degrees outside) but really felt she improved. They get tons of reps (20K+ sets) and good instruction. There are no hitters, so it is all technique and working on things you rarely get to do in your normal club setting.

You just need to send your kids to this camp with enough t-shirts or some Tide to do wash... soaked through a shirt each session (3 per day)!

I disagree. I have heard that the Sports Performance setter camp is significantly better, for setters, than any college camp!
