the question would be how high she touches on her block, and if she'll be effective blocking-wise in the front row. If she's aggressive, and always a threat when in the front row, college coaches will notice her.

Are college coaches expressing interest already?
Many are currently busy working on the 2009/2010 recruiting classes. If not, is your daughter being proactive to get herself noticed by coaches, ie - emailing, filling out website surveys, phone calls, unofficial visits, etc. If she's good, someone will want her. |

Some 2008 Setter examples (all 4 of their 2008 setters) from the 1st Alliance website:
"Also, congratulations to Alex Blatt (18 Alliance Silver), Melissa Joyce (18 Alliance Silver) and Megan McMahon (18 Alliance White) for being named as Honorable Mention All-Americans by Prep VB.com." Megan McMahon is 5'8 touches 9'1, college: Elon University Melissa Joyce is 5'6 touches 9'7, college: University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Alex Blatt is 5'11 touches 9'11, college: University of Minnesota Ashley August is 5'9 touches 9'1, college: St. Xavier University Bottom line: If you are a 5'8 setter for a good club and you can touch over 9'0", you will get a scholarship! Just choose wisely--for the academics, not just the VB program or coaches! Good luck in her choice! TH (edited for a typo) |

vbobsessed-- I have the same situation... Daughter is 2010 setter. She is 5' 9" and touches 9' 4". She has a couple dozen D1 schools keeping an eye on her. A few that already have contacted our club recruiter and trying to set up phone conversations, unofficial visits, etc....The key is exposure, if she stands out from the other setters, she will get noticed.
If the club she plays for does not get the exposure she wants, try another one. Even if she drops down to a 2 team on an elite club, she still will get much more looks. Look at sports performance- their 2 and 3 team setters are signing NLI to some good schools. Lets not forget about D2. There has been a couple of threads that talk about D1,D2 and making sure the school is the right fit. We even are looking at D2 schools if it is a good fit. Back to your original question about height-- these schools would not be looking at my daughter if 5' 9" was to short. Keep on working hard--its still REALLY early in the recruiting process!! |

5'9 is not too short unless she has narrowed her search to only include the top tier schools. My guess is Penn State, WI, Stanford, Nebraska, etc, won't be knocking but there are many many fine academic and athletic schools out there. My younger daughter played D1 and in the conference she was in 5'9 was on the tall side for some of the schools, average for others.
Saber is right, you need to be proactive. If your club isn't involved, she needs to start by figuring out schools she might be interested and sending out the email introducing herself. You can help, but make sure she does the main part of the work so that the emails are sounding and acting like they come from her. The coach won't want to be hearing from the parent at this point. Get a vidoe together and get it online if possible so they can check it out right away. Good luck - her options are many. |

What do you say to a 5'5" setter (also running 5-1) that touches 9'6"? Very athletic and excellent defender as well. What chance does she have?

I coached a left side 5'11ish girl in club a few years back. She's now her teams tallest athlete and is thus.... MIDDLE BLOCKER.
Division I Just throwing that out there for whatever it is worth |

TH - Thanks for the story! Its great to see that at least one big time school has realized that you don't need to be 6' to play top tier VB. There are many benefits of having a smaller, quicker, and athletic setter. I hope that PS follows up their championship run with another this year!

My daughter is 5-10 running a 5-1 and this is only her second season setting, I continue to tell her tht she must work hard to deliver her goals and she has a great supporting coaching staff, I think this idetifies several things necesssary,,,if she wants it keeo up her confidence and get her the help to keep improving. This inlcudes the traiiniing opportunities, a tean that trusts her and oyaing opportunity wto work out the "bugs"
