Nebraska Nostradamus wrote:Three 16 Open teams: Niagara Frontier finished (9th) with wins over Team Indiana and SPVB Sophs on final day. Really enjoyable tourney with great competition throughout. One consideration is the dominating part that initial seeding played in one's final finish, especially in the 16's division. Since you had to win your 1st pool to advance, SO much depended on that initial seed, so actual finish is a little misleading here. Synergy drew SPVB Elite and couldn't get by them on day 1; therefore, they were immediately relegated to Silver. Niagara, seeded 3rd in one of two 3-team pools actually had to beat 2 1st seeds to advance--one in their own pool, then the 1st in the other 3-team pool (Northern Lights) in a cross-over. Not a high-odds task just to make Gold as they were the only team to confront that obstacle. 1st v 2nd crossover pool match-ups at least allow for correction of potential seeding errors. Just a thought. Regardless, great to watch so many outstanding athletes go toe to toe--outstanding tournament--lots of college coaches. |

Sorry Niagra Frontier ... didn't recognize NFVB when I glanced at the USAV 16 Open list
Mizuno M1 16-1 placed 5th -- Qualified 16 Open Northern Lights 16-1 placed 6th -- Qualifed 16 National Synergy 16 Orange placed 7th -- Qualifed 16 Open Rolling Thunder 16 Blue placed 8th -- Qualified 16 American Niagra Frontier placed 9th -- Qualifed 16 Open Top Select Elite placed 17th -- Qualified 16 National OVA 16 Asics placed 19th -- Qualified 16 American IPVA 16 Black placed 20th -- Qualified 16 National Premier 16-1 placed 22nd -- Qualified 16 National ... only 6 teams advanced to Gold .. out of 7 pools .. very tough for sure Rolling Thunder had eventual champion, Team Z on Day 1 ... then did well until they ran into an impressive Synergy team in the Silver final .. our girls liked the 3 out of 5 format ... and enjoyed the break from officiating duties ... all of the SPVB work crews were outstanding |

The Niagara Frontier Program is definitely one on the rise and the travel and quality exposure is beginning to pay off. Their 15's team went 3-0 and popped
the Spri Elite and Spri Frosh team and had a solid tourney. Nice to see NY back on the National map.

Congrats to Circle City 18's winning that division. Does this make a case for
best 18's in the Midwest? Coach Keating has certainly done a great job of developing players. It's fun to watch that team. Their defense is spectacular! |

USAV teams dominate the best of the JVDA in 18 open?? | ||

How about 2 USAV teams being in the 18 open finals? |

Now I wasn't there, but...
1. Lights 171 beating SPVB 18 Elite would not be an upset to me this year, especially with all the SPVB injuries. Even at full strength, Lights would be coming to the table with the best OH and middle in the gym. 2. The fact that two USAV teams were in the 18 Open finals also means very little to me. I'd prefer to talk about the individual teams' success rather than USAV v JVDA... Circle City played great -- amazing defense from Carly Cramer and Stephanie Rex and a huge block -- and got the win. Kudos to them. Here's hoping that Fusion and M1, which were much less than full strength at NJCs, are at full strength for the Classic. I'd love to see those teams do battle! |

Fusions big middle did play against Circle City on Sunday. She got hurt walking down the stairs later that day. She didn't play on Monday against Illini
Elite and Sports Performance 18 Elite. Sports Performance put on a great event with great teams. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I wasn't there either, but after discussing with my girls last night, I was proud of their effort despite all the issues this weekend. We
(Fusion) were playing without one of our starting outside hitters (Parys) on Sunday and Monday with an abdominal injury that we need her to rest. It sounds
like Haggenjos filled in very well despite giving up a few inches to these talented teams. Parys did gut it out to fill in for Johnson in the middle on Monday
because we needed the body.
To their credit, the girls did not make excuses and said that they had their chances, but didn't convert. Circle City outplayed us in Game 5 as did Sports Performance. Circle City was the best team in the gym this weekend and clearly is a team to reckon with at JOs. However, it sounds like if you played this tournament 3 more times, you might get 3 different results as several teams were very close in talent. That is the type of competition you want at this time of the year as we all get prepared for our respective year-end events. Congrats to Circle City and Northern Lights on a great tournament. It looks like the end of the season is going to be fun! |

I'm not saying that CC isn't a good team, or that they wouldn't have won the field with they way they were playing even if everyone was at full strength, just that it's hard to come to the conclusion of best 18's in the midwest off this tournament finish alone, espescially considering that they have lost to several other midwest teams this season. |

I would definitely agree that if you held this tournament three more times you may have three different winners. Circle City feels very fortunate to have won such a strong tournament. It was good tournament to get ready for whatever your year end event may be. Any team that made the top 8 was very very good. In fact many of the teams that didn't make the final 8 were very good. The SPVB 18 White vs Capitol 18 David was a great match in the silver final. The position that impressed me the most in the gym was the libero's. All of the teams that I was able to watch had amazing back court players. Hope everyone has a fun end of the year. |
