I saw something at the last tournament twice which I had not seen before, and am wondering if it is a new or old trend brewing.
Basically, when calling a timeout for momentum swing, the coaches of two different teams could be seen waiting for the up-ref to (finish his/her) signal for the serve to start and then going to the down ref to ask for a timeout (as the girl is serving). I am 100% sure it was a calculated effort to get maximum disturbance to the server. I believe the down ref should not have accepted the late timeout, but they fell for it both times unless it is allowed by the rules. (The serves actually happenned and were cancelled out)
I think of it (kind of ) like the NFL coaches and the loophole where they could call timeout a half-second before the snap of a field goal try and the play
would go on and be meaningless and had to be repeated. After a few coaches did it, it became a mini-trend, and it only stopped either by public shame /
backlash or perhaps a rule change. (This was a no-class abuse of a legal option in the NFL, and this volleyball case is a no-class abuse of taking advantage
of down-refs not knowing the rules to disallow the late time out.)
What do you think, and is this new and growing?
