Epic won a close first game and led late in Game 2, but Austin rallied until a double was called (?) on Elly Barrett's one-handed dump attempt. In OT, a kill from Robin Rostratter, who had several clutch swings, won the match. In the same pool, KJ defeated Sports City in two. Sports Shack and Gold Cal won matches in Pool 1. Gold Cal's win was in three over Club Utah. Brooke McAlister was tremendous for Utah in the Game 1 win, but Gold Cal rallied to take the next two, prevailing on a kill from Molly Pon, a long point that featured point-saving digs from Kyndall Kordakis, Cora Harms and Lianne Vicchio. Skyline used back to back Madie Jones kill to blow open a close Game 2 and sweep Southwest Illinois. Colorado Juniors won an exciting three-game match with City Beach. Setter Molly Bagshaw was befuddling with her dumps for CB, which led comfortably in G2 until CJ rallied behind nice play in the middle from Emily Nielsen. Game 3 was 11-9 Colorado until kills from Katie Schimpf and Anne Smartt gave CJ five match points. Two Allison Whitson kills got City Beach back into it, but Colorado won when Vanessa Gemignani delivered a sweet back set to Smartt, who executed the Smartt tip to the sideline. In Pool 4. Vision got by San Gabriel in three games. Rachel Taylor and Katrina Post keyed San Gabriel's comeback win in Game 2. But a Megan McConnell kill put Viz up for good in Game 3, which ended on a kill then block from Kristina Graven. WVBA is up on Alamo in Game 2 in the other Pool 4 match. Kerry Clavadetscher is having a great match. Her dumps are a speedy thing of beauty!

They are wrong. They list two at No. 2. Smartt didn't sound right as a hitter but I went with it because she was listed second. (I didn't notice she was listed as 5-6). Anyway, Colorado Juniors had a chance to advance to tomorrow's Gold pools but four kills on four swings late in Game 3 from Brittany Monken propelled Southwest IL to the win and 2-1 record, good for second behind Skyline, which is 2-0 but has clinched first. In Pool 1, Sports Shack and Gold Cal are both into the next round and playing one another with 2-0 records currently. You are correct that Austin lost again, in 2 to KJ. Marlayna Geary was the offensive star for KJ but the true heroes were Stephanie Shumaker and the libero 8, not listed on the roster, who dug up one Austin shot after another. Austin then won its first match of the pool, versus Sports City, to stay alive, but needed a KJ win over Epic to get into a playoff for second. It did not happen as Epic came from behind in Game 2 with several big blocks, the last from MB Erica Wilson, to sweep and take first in the pool with a 2-1 mark. Epic had lost previously to Sports City in three. Vision won its pool from the three hole. Rachel Alvey did a nice job of setting. Two qualified teams, San Gabriel and WVBA, are playing now for second. 17 Open will have 5 qualified teams and 3 seeking bids: SWIL, KJ and Sports Shack. Remember: bids trickle only to sixth place this year.

RENO, Nev.(AP) Scientists urged residents of northern Nevada's largest city to prepare for a bigger event as the area continued rumbling Saturday after the largest earthquake in a two-month-long series of temblors. More than 100 aftershocks were recorded on the western edge of the city after a magnitude 4.7 quake hit Friday night, the strongest quake around Reno since one measuring 5.2 in 1953, said researchers at the seismological laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno. The latest quake swept store shelves clean, cracked walls in homes and dislodged rocks on hillsides, but there were no reports of injuries or widespread major damage. Seismologists said the recent activity is unusual because the quakes started out small and continue to build in strength. The normal pattern is for a main quake followed by smaller aftershocks. "A magnitude 6 quake wouldn't be a scientific surprise," John Anderson, director of the seismological lab, said Saturday. "We certainly hope residents are taking the threat seriously after last night." But Anderson stressed there was no way to predict what would happen, and said the sequence of quakes also could end without a major one.

The win against Laguna Kyle was of the come from behind variety, as in Laguna was up 20-16 in both games before falling. TAV is contuing its winning ways, playing Idaho Stars right now to clinch a spot in Gold. Golden Bear, without Tarah Murrey (prom) is 2-0. Colo Performance is 2-0 after sweeping Epic. Performance has two great setters and they controlled the match. Epic is 1-1 after Amy Webster pummeled a Skyline player with a game winning swing. KJ, with Kaitlyn Aust, all year with a stress fracture in her back, playing well, is 2-0 after beating Sunshine. Sunshine is 1-1 trying to get along without setter Sammie Selsky (ACL tear no. 2 a few weeks ago; hang in Samantha) In 16 Open, TAV survived an upset bid at the hands of ball controlling Empire, winning 16-14 in the third. Andrea McQuaid stepped up big late. Central Cal, City Beach and Vision all are 2-0. Mad Frog just lost a thriller to Club West in overtime in 15 Open. CW's outsides were immense in the win.
