More Questions.... | ||

I have four girls' from Iowa who play "beach doubles". The purpose of our trip to CA is to play on the beach, in the deep sand, with the ocean
breeze instead of the cornfields.
We will be at Missions during the week, not really on a full weekend so entering any tournaments is not an option. To help ensure the girls' get a great taste of CA sand doubles can you please advise me on: 1. will we need to bring our own net? 2. is the Wilson yellow and white AVP ball acceptable? 3. beach space for a court if we are to bring our own? a. do we just find a location b. can we bring lines 4. beach etiquette 5. what to wear (in Iowa the girls' wear sports bras/tanks and spandex) Thanks for any and all assistance. |

Here's some answers.
In Mission Beach, there are courts both on the beach and on the bay. Somtimes the bay-side courses are better protected from the wind. Generally, in California the wind starts picking up about noon, then dies down late afternoon. So I'd suggest playing in the morning or the evening - your girls will have more fun. Plus, it'll be a bit cooler. There are typically permanent courts (i.e., poles buried in the sand), some of which will already have nets and some that won't. So, you can bring a net if you want, but you shouldn't need to bring poles. None of the courts are private, so if your girls are the first to get to a court, you have priority. Bringing your own ropes is a good idea. The AVP ball is fine, just make sure it's the real ball and not the lower-priced version that is sometimes sold. Go with bathing suits, not spandex. Nothing gives away a non-local more than playing beach volleyball in indoor spandex. Of course, if its cool, they can wear shorts and t-shirts over their bathing suits. |

Twelve Courts...lots of ball. The girls' are having a blast boarding and playing ball. The athletes and surfers are great hosts for San Diego....at this
point, I am not sure how we'll ever get them back to Iowa!
