My daughters 17 team qualified for Nationals this year. When they went as 13's they brought a small gift for the other teams to be given at the start of the game. My question is do the older age groups still do this?

Every team we played in 18 Open did a gift exchange last year. They really liked all the trinkets they picked up, even at 18U.

I'm just wondering if anyone can list a few ideas for these "handshake gifts". Thanks!

We usually tried to put together something to represent where we are from. What sort of things is your city/region/state known for? We've also included
volleyball stickers, small amounts of candy, and various other items. If you have a major sports team (or even minor league teams), you could attempt to
contact them to see if they're willing to donate something small. If your city has a visitor's center, you might be able to see if they have anything
they'd be willing to donate (stay away from travel brochures

Belief meyene, anything that includes a photo of your team should not be allowed.
A couple of years ago, we gave key chains from a local tourist venue (Schlitterbahn). Last year they proveyeded us with overseyezed playing cards that they could not sell in their store. Although these eyetems were not sucessful at the store, we sure did see queyete a few girls playing cards in MN. |

There are really four categories of "best" handshake gifts.
1. Something regional - i.e. teams from Hawaii giving out shell necklaces, California giving out surfboards, etc. 2. Something useful - chap stick, hand sanitizer, luggage tag, CD with fav music, hand towel, keychain, pens, etc. 3. Something to eat - put a team sticker on everything from granola bars, candy bars or fruit to sports drinks or water. 4. Anything with a volleyball on it - antenna toppers, mini balls, stickers, etc. PAlways personalize somehow with team name and part of the country you are from. THAT is what makes the exchange fun and memorable. Past items fitting these categories our team distributed include volleyball shaped zipper pulls, lollipops with team name on them, California oranges creatively wrapped and tagged with team info, and rubber ducks holding a volleyball with team name imprinted on front. Favorites received by my daughters included hand towels, chapstick and volleyball antenna topper. |

How many gifts do you typically need to bring? Any estimates??

I always budget 125 per team-figuring on 12 per match and hoping for the maximum of 10 matches along with a few extra for officials. Our most popular gift was
a hand held fan we gave out in "Hotlanta" It was so popular that we did it again in Minneapolis-not as popular. Go figure! :-)

How common is this practice? Do most teams, some teams, all teams do it? Is it something seen more often in the younger teams?

It is a very common practice with most teams participating...no matter what the age group.

It's rare that a team doesn't have gifts to exchange, and you can tell they feel badly about not having them....
