My first question:
14 Open Pool 2-Did TT Mizuno really win 25-7, 25-2? It seems like the scores might be posted wrong.

Hmmm.... I'm 6'6" and about 230... maybe you should agree to share?

Our girls played them last year and already twice this year; always a great match. They are a great team, with great coaches and parents, and it was clear at Crossroads that they haven't peaked just yet. A class act all the way, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they get a bid this tournament.

...whatz would amaze me wouldz not be the score in the abovz but rathers why a team (Flatirons) that finished 19th in da Club Divsionz of Crossroads, der own backz yard, den travel halfz way across da country and play Openz in another NQ.

Godz bless da Openz division, USA Volleyball and da abscence of acceptance criteriaz in lettinz everyone dats whantz to into the Open division resulting in scorez like the above. I'm surez da Flatirons kidz will rememberz der trip to Big South and da beatin dey tookz in the first round...notz a positive JRVB experince...for da victors, der should be no accolades in beatin a team dis bad. Hadz a horse running in Jersey last fall thatz won easily and made me a bundle...but you knowz it been a lot more satisfying if all de other horse didn't only have three legz...

Yous learn little by beatin, or losing, to a teamz by scores like dez. Butz I'm sure, or hope, Dayz 2 and 3 will offer better competition to heplz these young athletes develop...

There was a 13 club team in 14 open at Xroads, because that was the only spot open when they registered... could be something like that, or it could be the team made a pre-season decision to go to one NQ in Open, and one in Club, before they had a good idea how they stacked up. We did that, and are stuck in club for SoCal when we should be in Open. In any event, it is truly difficult to get the right matchups... an area that needs some tweaking.

Open Division Acceptance Criteria (YJOVD, May 2007, Motion 10 & 16)

 Number of teams per club per division, with a maximum of two teams per club, per division unless additional space is available.
 Postmark date of entry application.
 Strength.
 Entries from the host state where the Qualifier is conducted.

These are selection criteria for entering and then acceptance to the open field, but I don't think any qualifier has reached the 48 team limit in order to drop teams from the open field, meaning anyone can opt to compete in the open field.

...a coaches thought process here based on your post, first understanding that their are/were openings in Club based on the Pool information.

Coaches Thought Process:
"I have a team, or maybe just the core of a team, that failed to make the National or American field at Nationals last year. I'll now start looking at my schedule plan for this season and will schedule two NQs. The first will be Club because maybe if all the stars and hard work line-up I might just be able to get this team into Nationals this year but if not, I'll at least have them at the right level of compeition where they'll be pushed and have some level of success...and for the second NQ I"LL SCHEDULE OPEN based on a strong desire to see how I match up at a level above that I have difficulty competing at? Hopefully, when the team gets beat 25-7 and 25-2 the players will be "motivated" to work harder although I'm taking a risk that they may just quit VB all together."

Might want to check SOCAL. Don't know what age division your in but their team list, if accurate and current, has several divisions with an unequal number of teams...meaning they may allow you to move up.

Our coach is in contact with SoCal; not sure how that is going. And throw another factor into the equation: "Our team is the best in its age group in the state, and thus deserve to play in Dallas, so maybe we should play in club for one of the qualifiers, to help ensure we have a ticket to the big dance."

...and thank-you for the post. My contention would be that with Opening the field to 48-Teams at nine NQs the key factor of "STRENGHT" never comes into play while the first criteria "Number of Teams (or just show us the $$$) is the determining factor...which resluts in a pretty useless and unevenly match first and possibly second day or competition. This is not good for teams wanting to develope against good competition, teams taking a beating, or JRVB.

...your the "Best in State" you should or will have the regions bid to JRVB and not need to pursue one at an NQ.

I hear you, but at the start of the season, before seeing how we matched up, we didn't want all our eggs in one basket. There was debate about that

...as acceptance into the Open Division at NQs:

1. All team that competed in Open at the preivous years JR National Tournament are accepted.
2. All team that finished in the Top-15 in the National Club Division at the previous year JR National Tournament are accepted.
3. If there are remaining slots open in the MAX 24 Team NQ Open field, the field will be filled from teams that are no lower than third in their current regions ranking system. This will required a letter of attestment from the regional commisioner to be included with the team's entry form.
4. The NQs committee is responsible for selection from the pool of teams in Section 3 by whatever method they choose or need to field a competitive Open Division at their NQ. All team not seleceted by the committee will automatically be entered the Club Division at the NQ.

A few questions:

1. What would you do with 14s that are new to the open division, since there isn't one for 13s?

2. Sounds good, but you're going to hear complaints because some teams are very different the following year (both teams that did well and those that didn't do well). Past success does not guarantee future success. How does that get addressed?

3. I don't see USAV buying this one as it limits the amount of teams (therefore less entrance fees) to both the host and USAV. Also, some regions don't have mandatory regional tourneys in order to track ranking. Heck, some regions don't even have rankings or they're so woefully incomplete to be disregarded. Some of those stronger regions would also dislike only the top 3, as there is usually at least one region every year that fields one very strong age group that might go as deep as 5 or 6. I think I read somewhere in the qualifier manual that teams are supposed to provide results for entry into the open field at a NQ. Found it:

When submitting entry information for a Qualifier, all competition results must be reported, regardless of the age division in which a team competes. In the absence of competition results, an application must be accompanied by a letter of explanation that addresses the reason(s) why results are not available. Teams that neglect to submit criteria used for selection may be eliminated.

Would that work?

4. The guarantee of entry into club division goes against what is written in the qualifier manual.

Under no circumstance is a team that is denied entry into an Open division guaranteed a berth in a Club division.

USAV would need to amend or eliminate this sentence and similar occurrences in order for this to happen.

Tornados are playing for the championship as the only unbeaten team. Congratulations!!

The other pool has everyone tied at 1-1, and it looks like the tiebreaker goes to TCA-CA. So if I read it right, Tornados, TCA-CA, and either Gainseville or Skyline get their tickets to Dallas.
