Middle Blockers |

Sometimes I feel like the MB always gets the bad rap. There are plenty of threads to glorify the setters but how about the MB? We've got a tough job, and being tall and lerpy doesn't help.

i totally agree...I'm a middle blocker but i can't be complaining because our coach gives us a lot of credit...but like other people on the teams think you have such and easy job...at least at my school they do...kind of sucks.

Oh my gosh...the middles have the toughest job of anybody. You are the defender of the net for every play. A middle has to be very agile, have great vertical movement and be quick. It takes loads more energy to maintain the jumps you are doing almost every play. Ask any athletic trainer about energy output.
BTW, this is why middles don't always play back row. Even a strong middle finds it difficult to maintain the level of defense needed at the net if she has to play back row. It's the fatigue factor. Your vertical is the first thing to suffer and a middle's selling point is often a good vertical like 28-30 inches. |

IN the middle | ||

Thats right I totally agree! Middles always get crap for not being the most "fundamentally sound" players out there, but its only because our position is hectic. We run back and forth across the net hundreds of times a GAME.
Us middles obviously have to save our energy and my coach pretty much rocks because he tells the other players on my team to do lines for me and the other middle so we can "rest our legs" during tournaments. Ya, lines suck, doesn't seem so bad to be a middle now huh? |

Middles need to be SAV! | ||

Middles have it tough, no doubt about it. But the truth is, no one out there deserves any crap. Every position has its ups and downs, all of which are highly demanding.
For all you middles out there, keep plugging away and doing your thing. As you progress you'll soon realize that middles receive a lot more credit then you think. |

I'm not gonna lie being a middle is already hard enough, but it's hard to compete with the 6 foot 5 giants on the other side of the net. I'm only 5'9 and its hard to even be noticed next to those girls. Any other short middles out there?

im 6'2 and i feel short sometimes as a middle..
but we do have a hard job.. after serveing and then comming in to play back row i sometimes get fustrated b/c the block isn't closed at the net...then i think.. wait now i see how the DS/liberos feel and how the pressure is on the middles to close so that the ds/liberos have an easier job. basicly we start the defense..if it doesn't get closed its our fault and may cost the team a point. and i always feel like im running in a constant circle.. block, go back to hit, fake hit, cover hitter, block other side, go back run a slide, fake it, cover outside hitter, block a rally...repeat...hit every now and then...repeat..wow... |

me too! | ||

Im only 14 and im 6'1. Sometimes i feel so short and compared to the other older middles. Everybody always marvels about how tall i am, but im not even supposed to grow that much any more. I guess that means i better start working on my vertical.

talk about short middles

I'm 14 and 5'7", and we are on our way to JO's. I'm short but I can jump and react, love the slide and 3's!!! And it is good to be short because you can play defensively in the back row. This may be my last year as middle, but playing this position has taught me so much, I am confident that I can play any position.

Wow. All you middles above 6', DONT feel short haha I'm a 5'11 middle and I feel short sometimes. But my energy and speed makes up for it. Sometimes I think its better to be short for a middle, because its easier to play backrow after the serve I guess. I have alot of energy tho and I guess thats why I play middle haha other than I love it. I have a question tho...do you guys get set WAY less than the other players? Thats how it is on my team..middles average less than 5 hits a game...

youth team MB | ||

yes i am a youth national team middle and they give us respect cause we work so hard but still our position is way over looked for like a really hard worker and the regular height for us for a middle blocker is 6foot or higher forthe youth national team!!! this is a amazing post but to all middles out there keep working

ya i agree its hard to do everything on almost every play. OPn my team im the one who hits every play and try and bloc every ball. It takes a lot of work to be a mb.

umm.. im definentally short!
|
haha.. ok so all the girls that are 6' or taller.. your not short.. im 16 and played 2 years of highschool varsity as a 5'9 (5'10 on a good day) middle! wow.. its tough when all the girls on your team are taller than you 2.. its crazy.. i was the shortest girl at the net.. so when i see a 6'5 girl on the otherside.. i just want to block her even more cuz sometimes we dont get the credit we deserve.. hey.. i can block that is the attitude that the shorter of us have to have.. elbows over the net is tough.. but its the energy from a tough game that keeps the middles jumping when everyone else isnt.. and our job is 10x harder than any other! so keep at it.. and eventually we possibly (or will) stuff block those 6'5 girls on the other side of the net!!!
p.s. to all my sort middles! i have bocked a 6'5 girl.. and it was SWEET!!!! |

Re: umm.. im definentally short!

I'm only 5'10" and I'm a middle. I probably have the worst vertical of any middle ever so I have to play smart. I loves ones cuz since I don't jump very high I hit the ball that much quicker and the other team doesn't expect it. it also means I'm not a great blocker though
any tips? |

what we are | ||
|
we are like the marines...always in for the set first.
its a tiring position to play but also the sets are harder too its not like OH or OPP where you can adjust to a bad set we are already up in the air ready to slam it down the other teams throats and if it is off or low then its hard to keep it in play still i give mad props to the setter for all the bad passes and hustle plays but i think we have the hardest position overall. and by the way if you are 6 ft or over your doing good for your height haha im jealous =] im only 5'11" and im almost done growing! recruiters like seeing 6 foot middles better than 5'11" even if its only an inch..that inch makes the difference. |
