In Division 1 : Sunshine 17, Wave 18, Sports Shack 18, Cal Juniors 17, Sunshine 18-Roxy, Sport Shack 17, Jamba 18-1 These 7 teams will not be attending Mandatory 3 because they will be at FAR WESTERNS. With 7 teams missing will SCVA drop all 7 of these teams to Division 2? If so, 7 teams will move up from D2?

It only hurts So Cal teams. First SCVA schedules the LA Qualifier the same date as Denver's. They follow that scheduling blunder with mandatories on the same dates as Spokane and Reno qualifiers. These are the only two west coast qualifiers. Teams are forced to travel farther than necessary increasing costs for parents. Club fees include mandatories costs so teams which skip a mandatory face a financial penalty. There were only 3 bids available for both the 17 and 18s this year in LA. Most experts agree this is the best division in the country, SCVA should try to work to benefit its region instead of ridiculous scheduling conflicts with mandatories. Look how many teams went to JO's last year from these two age groups. SCVA work for the clubs, not against them.

The schedule this year was horrible for So. Cal teams. In my daughter's age group, the SCVA qualifier was scheduled on the same weekend at the PNQ and Crossroads, both are qualifiers that are relatively easy to get to from So. Cal. So the options for an "away" qualifer was limited and forced most So. Cal teams to attend the same away qualifier. The effect of this overlap along with the conflicts with mandatories is making it really difficult for So. Cal teams this year. That's why you see teams bailing from mandatories to try to qualify. The teams that are heading up to Reno are for the most part all teams that are clearly among the top 28 in their age division in the country and deserve to be in the Open division at Miami. Two suggestions the SCVA should consider. First, work with USAV to avoid scheduling the SCVA qualifier on the same weekend as other qualifiers that are geographically favorable for So. Cal teams (i.e., PNQ,). Allow So. Cal. teams one exemption from a Mandatory to allow them to attend a qualifier even if it conflicts with the Mandatory. Under this exemption, the team's spot within the SCVA seedings would be frozen for that tournament (i.e., they would recieve the same points as they received in the previous mandatory and be given the same seed in the next mandatory as they would have had in the Mandatory they missed). If we don't start to see some of these types of changes, I think some So. Cal clubs are going to start questioning the entire qualifying process and consider alternative routes (i.e., going back to Festival or playing in the JVDA Championships).

We have played back to back weekends, and did the same again after the SC JOQs. But now will have about a month off before the 3rd Mandatory. Not to mention, our team started way down this year and after winning 3 of the 5 tournaments so far we are still in Silver with no chance to make Gold at regionals (even if we win the next 2). Regionals is done on your overall points standings not where you finish the last Mandatory.

I have a couple of question, I am not from southern cal. How does SCVA determine which teams go to nationals (do the mandatories have anything to do with it) - I don't think SCVA can do anything about the qualifier issue, as most qualifiers have their dates reserved a year to two in advance, although they could avoid the qualifiers with the "Mandatory" What is the penatly for skip the "MandatorY"? I believe the "Mandatoy" should try to avoid the Qualifiers esp (LA, X-Roads, Reno, Spokane) - when do they give you the dates of the next years "mandatory"? Thanks

The region is divided into different divisions with 16 teams in each division (there is a series of qualifying tournaments at the begining of the year to place teams in an appropriate division). The mandatories are used to accumulate points for determing the National and American bids for the region. The penalty for missing a mandatory is that you are given last place in the tournament (i.e., you finish 16th out of the 16 teams) and then move down a division for the next mandatory. This can affect the points the team needs to get the National or American bid. Therefore, the penalty for missing a mandatory can be serious, particularly if you aren't picking up the Open bid at a qualifier. This is why the tournaments are known as "mandatories" and this is why most teams try to avoid scheduling a qualifier on the same weekend as a mandatory. Can't remember exactly when the mandatory dates are issued, but they are certainly available at the time teams are deciding on their qualifier schedule. Given the number of different age divisions, it is difficult for SCVA to avoid all conflicts with mandatories and the qualifiers you listed. I like the idea of an "exemption" for one mandatory to attend a qualifer in which the team would not incur the point penalty.

This goes back to being able to qualify IN YOUR REGION, and the SCVA had their region qualifier which didn't conflict with any region mandatories. The SCVA shouldn't have to accomodate their schedule according to all of the qualifiers in the country, they are on their own schedule. This is the point of having the qualifier's throughout the country so that each region can send their best teams, if you can't qualify in your region, you shouldn't be allowed to intrude on other regions just because it might be easier or...whatever. You do have an option, just travel the country and be a team that plays qualifiers and skip playing in the SCVA.

I don't think it is out of the question to ask that those who schedule regional power league/mandatory tournaments, as well as those responsible for the qualifier schedule, to exercise better judgment. There is no reason for NCVA Power Leagues to conflict with the So Cal Qualifier or vice versa. It is also ridiculous to have 3 of the 4 "western" qualifiers conflict like they did in the 15s age group (PNQ, SCVA, Xroads). Teams should have the opportunity to attend a qualifier out of region without jeopardizing their standing in their region. If teams were only allowed to qualify at the JNQ closest to them geographically only 3 SCVA teams would qualify in each age group. Can anyone make an honest argument that only 3 SCVA teams deserve to finish in the top 28 teams in each age group (14s-18s). Based on last year's results: 18 Open- 5 of top 12 were SCVA 17 Open- 4 of the top 12 were SCVA 16 Open- 5 of the top 12 were SCVA 15 Open- 4 of the top 12 were SCVA 14 Open- 2 of the top 12 were SCVA Region based qualifying would make it impossible to field the best 28 teams in the age group. Open is designed to take the best 28 teams, regardless of region, and let them play it out at Nationals. The National division is designed to take the best of the rest, by region, and let them play it out. Determining how to make it happen that way is the topic of another thread.

If USAV wants to go to a pure regional qualifying process, that would be fine with me. But as you say, the process they've set up is supposed to identify the top 28 teams and therefore encourages teams from strong regions to seek out bid at "away" qualifiers. That's the purpose of the qualifying system. Since that's the objective, there does need to be coordination between regional tournaments and the qualifiers. As you say, you can't avoid all conflicts, but you can make an effort. In my daughter's age group (15s), So. Cal Teams could not attend either PNQ, Crossroads, or Reno (the three closest qualifiers to So. Cal) because of conflicts with either the SCVA qualifier or a mandatory. That's ridiculous.

" Seems as those this words are written by a person who forgets/chooses to ignore, who pays the dues for clubs, SCVA, mandatories, qualifiers, JO's and USA Volleyball. The Parents. SCVA should work for the them and the betterment of the girls playing. Not as some autocratic organization.

Interesting argument, except that some regions are way stronger than others. If you want people to not travel out of region to qualify, then SoCal should get more open bids in their qualifier, as should Texas, Great Lakes, etc. AND, if you're not supposed to be able to qualify out of region, then why do they let teams do it?
