SCVA announces the "Summer Soiree" |
Lead | |||||
|
With much uncertainty over the future of the Volleyball Festival and many local Southern California teams reticent to travel in this economy, the SCVA will
hold its inaugural Summer Soiree June 26-30 at the American Sports Center Complex in Anaheim and the Anaheim Convention Center.

So Cal Summer Soiree | ||||||
|
I think the Summer Soiree is a great idea, Something we have been needing in So Cal, We have wonderful weather and great hotels. A great plus to be able to
have the event in the Anaheim Convention Center and ASC with them being only a mile apart. Both are great venues.

Please Come! | ||||||

The only Qual we go to is Socal. We don't have a big team and, just facing facts, we know our chances of going to Florida are pretty slim. We kept
waiting to hear about the festival, but today our club made the decision to go to the Summer Soiree. I only hope we get to play some non-SCVA teams. The
thing I liked about the festival (and still like about the JOQs) was that we played teams we had never even heard of before. It was fun for the girls to play
teams from Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, and we even played a team or two from the Midwest and East Coast. Of course, both of our festivals - we did
play at least one SCVA team that we had faced before.

I would think a trip to Anaheim and Disneyland will be more appealing than 120 degree weather in Phoenix. Should be very attractive for the non-So. Cal teams
that typically go to the Festival.
I like the idea, just hope for the sake of the So. Cal teams that SCVA can find a way to make the tournament unique and not feel like another day at ASC. |

If the soiree is in place of the Festival, I am all for it. The courts at the ASC are great with huge nets protecting each court from stray balls. There are
bleachers for both teams, decent food in the cafeteria and great food at the Mexican Market nearby. You can even get an acupuncture or massage while you are
there too. The hotels near Disneyland are not expensive and the food options are fantastic. Plus, the freeway is right there and its hard to get lost. All in
all, its a great place to play Vball. As for the other teams coming from other states, I think its great. Last weekend we played this great team from Baja
Mexico. Boy, every single one of them could have been an outstanding libero on any team. It was a blast. I hope teams come from the Mid-west too, they will
like SoCal.

After seeing this message I was glad to know what was finally going to happen this summer.
Now I see on Facebook, via Crush V. Bear, the offical source for the Volleyball Festival

For Woolley remember not only does So Cal Soiree have the ASC which I agree has wonderful food, but they also have the Convention Center 1 mile away so this
will be just like Festival. I am sure Ann is planning a lot of fun type things like they have at festival. What a lot of Southern Ca. teams are doing is
staying as teams in hotels which makes it seem like you really are out of town, which is great for teams that never really travel. I know that a lot of other
teams all over the USA are going to attend so don't be afraid this is going to just be a one big So Cal tournament. I think we all should support this
adventure and look forward to the Soiree in the coming yrs.

So is the summer soiree a done deal in addition to festival? |

Interesting | ||||||
|
nothing on the scva website (yet) about the soiree; and nothing on the festival site (yet) about what they are doing. you'd think they'd want to be
proactive and post info ASAP as teams/clubs are making decisions about this stuff as we speak.
vbdewd Observation: there's getting to be a lot of 'end of season' events these days... |

The Summer Soiree is now on the SCVA website on its schedule of tournaments instead of volleyball festival. It is definitely up and running - registration is
open and my club has already registered. We are looking forward to a great event!

soiree or festival? | ||||||
|
Was researching the cost of going from tx to the soiree or festival. Assuming 10 players 1 coach 1 chaperone. Flights are cheap to lax or phx, $200 each,
$2400 total. Cheapest Anaheim name brand hotel with 4 per room is Sheraton at $132. Hyatt is $195 and Dbltree Suites is $222. Cost $3300 for 5 rooms, 5
nights. Festival has negotiated cheap rates. Cheapest name brand is Hilton Suites at $97. Hyatt is $116, Wyndham $119, Sheraton $135. Cost $2910 for 5
rooms, but for 6 nights since festial is longer and gurantees 14 matches. Need two vans from LAX at $700....can't put a cost on LA traffic ;-). Phx has a
new light rail going to main hotels which are right next to the convention center. Cost $36 ($3 r/t for 12). Soiree registration should be around $700.
Festival registration $1210 but its longer and has lots of fun stuff included. Soiree $7100, Festival $6556. So festival is cheaper with more play and more
competition from around the country. Even if you're a local socal team, unless you're staying at home, the soiree hotel rates could eat you up unless
you can find a cheap Ramada. Good luck. Festival here we come!

112 degrees in the shade vs. 75 degrees in the shade?
|
Have you been in Phoenix during the summer? I have a sister who lives in Scottsdale and most of the locals try to escape the heat during May-July. My only comment is that in between volleyball matches... you might want to walk outside and enjoy the local amenities/sites of the town without having your throat singed by the heat of the dry desert air! Why do you think the rates are so cheap in 'Zona during the summer? . You might want to reconsider, unless you enjoy staying indoors the entire trip. |

Summer Temps. | ||||||
|
!00 - 112 degrees in the summer do not feel much different indoors. The few minutes families have to themselves are usually spent indoors. Avoid the malls
unless you want to see 300 other VB teams! My recent experiences with JO`s: Twice in Salt Lake over 100, same in hot humid Houston with little to do, twice in
hot downtown Atlanta where night life was not possible, Minnesota was cold by So Cal standards where the train ends at the mall. Whats so different about
Phoenix, parents complain but the kids are happy to go anywhere! 90% of the trip will be in the gym or traveling to.

Look at cost again | ||||||
|
Just spent 3 days in Anaheim at a Courtyard Marriot for the SCVA qualifier. Cost was $99 per night. LA traffic was non-existent cause we were just down
Katella about 10 miles from ASC. We did do the math, and will be going to SCVA instead of Phoenix. Course we would love to see more non-SOCAL teams - you are
all invited!
P.S. Played Main Beach, City Beach, and Vision last weekend. Only beat one of them, but it was great to play someone new. That Main Beach team is especially awesome. Like our coach said - we just had no answer for #15 (who happened to be Karissa Cook). |

already checked the rates
|
The rates I mentioned earlier were for the actual dates of the tournaments. No disneyland socal rates at $99 during the soiree. Probably because schools are
out and your competing with summer disneyland trips. Btw, since my last post, the Phoenix Festival got the rate at the brand new sheraton next to the conv ctr
down to $120.

What do we know about college coaches coming out to see players at either of these tournaments? The 1 time we went to festival there seemed to be enough
coaches around until the olders at JO's started...what about the soiree?

Let me tell you why the SCVA tournament is a good deal. To start, there are more things to do in the area than you will have time to get to. Let me just point
out the obvious ones:
Disneyland Down-Town Disney Knotts Berry Farm Medieval Times Wax Museum Dodgers are in town More places to eat than you have time The Beaches of Southern California (Huntington Anyone?) The point is that although the Soiree is a place where you will be playing volleyball to win, there is TONS of things to do to make it a "working" vacation. One of the coolest things I have ever done was take my family on a "Murder-Mystery" dinner-date. By far the coolest thing I have done in SoCal. It was worth every penny. The playing sites are close together and the SCVA has it figured out now that people want the playing sites to be close together. People I am telling you... it will be awesome. Please come.

It's not that I think it won't be good, we know what SoCal has to offer- we live here. But we have a 17's team and if JO's isn't
happening, this will be the last tournament our girls will have a chance to be seen by college coaches (some are just getting back from injury). Does anyone
know if the Soiree will draw college coaches like the Festival has in the past?

if you build it they will come
|
College coaches will follow the players they need to watch. Most of the coaches I know will be watching with interest to see which teams decide to play where
and then make travel plans accordingly. And it is not necessarily going to see the "best teams" although good competition is a huge variable.
Coaches need to see the players they are recruiting and have made contact with first before they go fishing to see what else is out there. I have heard the
question "so if your team does not get a bid, what tournament will you attend?" several times. There are so many end of year tournaments now
that's it is becoming a real challenge for coaches - especially since they are all around the same date.
