The teams scheduled to play are: Corona Del Mar Harvard Westlake Hawaii Baptist Academy Iolani Iolani JV Black Kahuku Long Beach Wilson Los Alamitos Mililani Mira Costa Moanalua Molokai Newport Harbor Pearl City Punahou Radford Redondo Union Sacred Hearts Academy San Marcos Word of Life Should be some very good volleyball taking place close to Waikiki Beach!

How good is Wilson with everyone returning, one year older? Can HW and Newport reload after last year's excellent results? Is Los Al the real deal or a one man show?

Registered Member Posts: 77 (08/08/08 7:14 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	i would have to give the nod to Iolani as the best team in the islands...despite losing their fire power and experience on the outside, they return the most talent...with senior middle Chalsea Hardin and juniors Mali`e Yoon and Mahina Haina...and I think libero/defensive specialist Kelly Pang should be returning for the Raiders after sitting last season out with a torn ACL... Last year's Kamehameha team is being considered one of the best teams ever to come outta the islands, so I really don't think there will be a team in Hawai`i that would be able to touch that Kamehameha team from last season... Punahou might be a threat this year to take the ILH and state title home as they return state all-star and junior olympic all-star Anuhea Keanini...i really think it will be an exciting season for girls volleyball in the islands because there is no one clear cut favorite like the past two/three seasons with Kamehameha and Kanani Herring... But despite losing all that talent we still can't count out the Warriors either as the do return all-state and league middle blocker Alex Akana as well as setter Caitlin Andrade...Kamehameha always reloads with talent and with the coach they have he'll find a way to get Kamehameha back to the top again. Only time will tell to see who will reign supreme in the islands this season!

I do think Redondo, with the addition of some transfers, is going to be good this year. Not sure I'd pick them over Costa though. Costa apparantly has a pretty good outside hitter.

People forget that before this current run of four state titles in a row, the Mustangs hadn't won state since 1989. There is good talent in Manhattan, but they lost so much. If you look at the success of Mizuno LB at the lower ages this year as well as Laguna and Wave, it's not a stretch to conclude those area schools might have more ultimate success in '08.

But you weren't just picking a La Jolla, Laguna, or Long Beach team ahead of Costa in Hawaii, you picked Redondo, a team that also lost a ton of talent. Again, I do think Redondo is going to be strong this year, but I'd still pick Costa to win the Bay League and to finish ahead of Redondo in Hawaii.

They lost a great libero in Sydney Yogi to graduation, but have a returning setter, big middles and opposites(by Hawaii standards), but most of all, Imike's setter Anuhea Keanini may also be the best outside hitter in the state right now. She is just a bulldog on the court. First day at Ann Kang they will be in a nice pool with Long Beach Wilson and Newport Harbour, along with public school east and west division champions Moanalua & Mililani. Iolani has the size on paper, but where is their outside hitting going to come from? They have some talent but it is really young. So plenty of ??? Kamehameha graduated a ton of talent, but they still will be really tough, watch out for Misty Maa(ASICS 15s), a freshman, has the potential to really light it up this year on the outside along with solid opposite Taylor Akana(ImiIke 16s) and Whitney(oh). Caitlin(setter) and Alex(middle) match up well with Iolani's setter(Malie) & Chelsie Harding(middle) So I expect dogfights in each of these matchups. Punahou and Kamehameha will be on TV locally and maybe online at OC16 right after the Durango tournament in Las Vegas(Kamahemahe and Iolani are participating in Durango)

Registered Member Posts: 77 (08/11/08 7:25 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	thanks for the insight on Punahou...it looks like it will be another up and up year in the ILH between the big three schools...I jus really wasn't sure who Punahou has that's why I didn't really include them, I know who Iolani returns and yup they have no outside hitting after the graduation of Keanini and Minkel...Kamehameha always has talent so you can never count them out...but do you really think Alex Akana matches up with Chalsea Hardin? I thought Chalsea is the best middle attacker in the islands because she has some devastating hits and she is a great blocker despite being undersized nationally... I know it's hard to say, but with the ILH in a rebuilding year, do you think there is any chance for an OIA school or even a BIIF school possibly to take the reigns as state champions? I don't really know much about the OIA so I don't know who the contenders are coming into the season... Also mentioning Anuhea Keanini, not only may she be the best outside hitter in the state, but I might also consider her the best setter in the state as well, because if I'm not mistaken didn't she make the all-tournament team at the JO's as setter for `Imi `Ike? Anu most definitely is the best all-around player in the islands and hopefully she has a good supporting cast to lead Punahou back to the top in the ILH and the state! It looks like another exciting year in girls high school volleyball!

This 2008 class had some great players. Most schools have excellent players but will need to find others who will step up - there is still a wealth of young talented club players who will be counted on for their schools. There's no clear-cut #1. I'm picking Iolani, Punahou, and Moanalua as my top 3 right now, with Kamehameha the darkhorse pick. Interesting to note that all those teams still need to find a "go-to" OH, have experienced setters and middles, but need newcomers in other areas. And keep an eye out on the incoming crop of Hawaii 9th graders, led by what I call the "Big 3", all daughters of former UH Wahine standouts.
