Best City for Girls High School Volleyball? |
Lead | |
|
Am looking forward to the forthcoming high school rankings to see if any other city can rival Louisville as the home to the best girls high school volleyball
in the country. With Assumption, Mercy and Sacred Heart all finishing in the top 25 last year, and all three likely to be ranked in the top 20 this
pre-season, it's doubtful any other city in the nation can claim the title!

Hmmm... | ||

...love the testosterone-laced posts of MavaDad! Ok, I'll play. How about a city with three teams in the Top-15 last year?
Mercy (3) Assumption (5) Sacred Heart (23) Saint Thomas Aquinas (7) Lee's Summit West (8) Bishop Miege (13) Average for the 3-Team: Louisville (10th), Kansas City (9th) You of course recognize that third position team from KC, Bishop Miege, the team that won the Tournament of Champions in St. Louis with Mercy and Sacred Heart in the field? And another unique fact? OMG a public school, Lees Summit West, shackled by public school boundary requirements and unable to recruit also on the list? Shall we expand the dicussion to include professional sports franchises? Short discussion as Louisville, in fact the entire state of KY has none...with the one KY advantage being that annual horsey thing. Maybe college basketball? Kansas, National Champions. Louisville or KY? College football? Missouri and Kansas....Louisville and Kentucky? Shall we continue? Naw, let's keep it at the high school volleyball level which is the only common denominator in regard to sports between the two.

What is With All the Catholic Girl Prep Schools in Louisville
|
Having watched and admired KIVA and MAVA players for the last four years I can see why Louisville has such good high school volleyball.
What I don't understand is why there are so many Catholic all-girls prep high schools in Louisville. We've got 3.2 million people up here in the Twin Cities metro but just one Catholic all-girls girl prep high school. Louisville has 1.2 million people in the metro area. Maybe the Twin Cities lack of Catholic all-girls prep schools can be traced to all the Lutherans running around up here. Do other metro areas have multiple choices when it comes to Catholic all-girls prep high schools? |

Interesting analogies all, but I titled my post as the best "city" for girls volleyball in the country-you mentioned three different cities spread
across two different states! The three entries for Louisville are all within 5 miles of each other!

St. Louis volleyball is dominated by Catholic schools
|
The archdiocese does an incredible job of pushing athletics down into the grade school levels through the Catholic Youth Conference programs, which serves as a
feeder program for the Catholic High schools.
St. Joseph's: Alma Mater of one Kristin Folkl. Four time Missouri state volleyball champion while she was there. Incarnate Word: Alma Mater of one Erin Waller. I think she won three state championships. Faulty memory here. Cor Jesu has won multiple state championships. Other strong programs in large schools: Nerinx Hall, Ursuline. Small schools: Visitation, Duschene, Notre Dame, Villa Duchesne (In the last few years), Bishop Dubourg, Rosati-Kain, Borgia. Vianney and Saint Louis University High has dominated boys volleyball in the large schools while St. Mary's has dominated the small schools. Chaminade, Priory, Desmet, and Christian Borthers have all done their share of winning in boys volleyball. |

Hmmm... | ||

...well you got me on that technicality as major population centers do indeed incorporate surrounding "suburbs" in their population. The three
schools in the Kansas City "area" however are all within 20-minutes of each other and play each other multiple times over a season which insures a
lower ranking as someone has to lose.
Off the subject, what is wrong with the public school systems in Louisville where there is a need for three private Catholic schools within five miles of
each other?

Public versus private schools in Louisville
|
The Jefferson County (Louisville) Public schools are not ranked very highly, likely due to the racial issues that this area faced in the 1960's. (not a
native to the area, but that's what I have been told)
In addition to the three Catholic girls schools, there are two huge private boys schools as well (St. Xavier and Trinity) |

Where do the girls come from?
|
Do most of the girls that go to Mercy, Assumption, and Sacred Heart live within the city boundaries of Louisville? There are I think 8 Catholic high schools in the Twin Cities metro area and while their level of play is improving they don't make it to state in volleyball very often. That doesn't hold true in other girl's sports and in many boy's sports. I wonder why they don't dominate the volleyball scene like down in Louisville. Aren't some of the better teams in Chicagoland Catholic high schools? |

Best City for Girls High School Volleyball
|
I would have to rank Cincinnati right up there with the best. The Girls Greater Catholic League (GGCL) Scarlet Division was ranked as the top league in the
country last year. While I agree with mavadad42 that Mercy, Assumption, and Sacred Heart are 3 national contenders each year, the Cincinnati area Catholic
schools have their share of nationally ranked teams. Per Maxpreps.com, Mother of Mercy was 7th and Mount Notre Dame was 11th.
vhook, the Greater Cincinnati area has many Catholic high schools. Here is the breakdown for you. All girls Catholic high schools with last years enrollment. GGCL Scarlet Division: McAuley (771) Mother of Mercy (569) Mount Notre Dame 761) Seton (543) St.Ursula (711) Ursuline Academy (656) Co-ed Catholic high schools GGCL Grey Division Badin (551) Fenwick (561) McNicholas (776) Purcell-Marion (408) Roger Bacon 587) Alter (649) Carroll (972) Chaminade/Julianne (820) Northern Kentucky just across the river from Cincinnati Bishop Brossart (379) Covington Catholic (512) Holy Cross (440) Newport Catholic (470) Notre Dame Academy (568) Villa Madonna Academy (180) |

Where do they come from?
|
I would venture a guess that many of the girls do live in Jefferson County, which is home to the city of Louisville. Virtually all of the state
championships in girl's and boy' ssports (including volleyball) are won by the private schools in the state of Kentucky.

Blame it on Norway and Sweden, not Canada
|
I will just have to blame the lack of volleyball domination in the Twin Cities area by Catholic high schools on the Norwegians and Swedes. Too many Norwegians and Swedes running around Lake Woebegone and not enough Germans, Italians, and Irish. The Scandinavians can play hockey though. I'll take the worst girls high school hockey team in Minnesota against any girls hockey team that Louisville, St. Louis, or Cincy can throw together. |

Hmm... | ||
|
...well MavaDad that makes sense.
In Kansas City we are very fortunate to have choices of excellent private and nationally recognized public schools. It would indeed be scary should the public school systems in KC be substandard or divided and all that volleyball talent was funneled into only the private schools. Reviewed last year's results for the KY State high School Championships on the Kentucky High School Site and it does indeed indicate, by looking at the lopsided scores, that volleyball is non-existent in KY outside the private school system. |

Well, if you drew a five mile radius circle, I think Wheaton/Warrenville/Naperville
|
could have something to say about being a hotbed for volleyball. IIRC, St. Francis, Naperville North, Naperville Central, Wheaton Warrenville South were all
nationally ranked last year.
I think that's pretty close to what Mavadad was suggesting... |

Thanks for pointing out the Naperville/Wheaton connection-that is what I was looking for.
Is that the home area of Sports Performance? |

How about this for All-American, All-City Team
Kocher, Zablis, Luhrsen, Kolosky, Barnicle and Jendryk. (and we only mentioned the 18's and 17's). And Yes they all play for SPRI. |

I would have to second Newpost07 in at least mentioning Kansas City. I remember one time last season when I remarked to my wife that Kansas City had 3 teams in
the top 10 list here on Prepvolleyball.com.
