Right on, John! Make it Junior OLYMPICS with much more color throughout...especially an Opening Ceremony. It adds so much to the event and really makes it
something special.
I would also stop play on all other courts while the Championship match is being played in every division and not start back up until after the Medal ceremony. |

AMEN especially on the tie breaking because for 2 years we've been burned on that 3 way tie and ending up 4th!
so so so many good points and I agree with all of them! how do you feel about running JO's? |

Well, he did actually ask, so... I'll maintain at least a glimmer of hope.
That "first step" of item one is a humdinger though, huh? |

Agreed. The 14 Open championship between Long Beach Mizuno and Puerto Rico Borinquen Coqui was the last match of the tournament. The girls on the court were nearly dodging the conference center workers who were trying to sweep up. Despite this, there was still a loud and boisterous atmosphere. The Borinquen Coqui families were great, and Long Beach was supported by their 16's silver medal finalists, Wave 14's, Vision, Sam's Laguna Beach 14's, Bakersfield and TCA (hope I didn't miss anyone). I wish more tournament goers could have experienced such a great championship atmosphere. |

Great suggestions | ||

This was my first year at JO's, and although overall a great experience, it was a bit of a dissappointment. It was nothing like a typical Big South
experience (maybe not last year because of the tornado problem). If the folks from Tampa Bay can put together an experience like Big South, why can't USAV
do that plus more??
Thanks again John for your suggestions, maybe someone will listen. |

Outstanding article John! Exactly what I'd always hoped for when my daughters' went to Nationals. I was disappointed the first time and continue to be
disappointed. I hope something changes.

I was very disappointed in the court layout of the JO's. It was so tight in comparison to Qualifiers or even JO's in Minneapolis last year. JTAWA - great article and suggestions. I hope USAV will take these considerations to heart. While we had a great time at Nationals (both my daughters played), there are definately things that need to be fixed. |

JTAWA great job!
Nationals are supposed to be the culmination of the year, a showcase to reward all the hard work that the young ladies, families and coaches have sacrifice throughout the year. USA Volleyball, this should be the biggest and most exciting event of the year, lets start planning!!!

Terrific article and I concur on all points. This was my d's first JOs, and we were definitely disapointed for virtually all of the reasons you point out.
On another point, this is just the type of article that I find very interesting (and I think sparks discussion and interest in this web site). I know there's another thread on the quality of this site. From my view, more articles like this one that take a critical look at junior volleyball are of the most interest to me. |

Have you got any feedback from anyone at USAV about our suggestions? Just curious how open they are to trying to make these changes. There must be some
interest since they are soliciting advice.

Not yet NN, but here's the thing: I've been making these points since 2003 and most of them are universal truths.
Does anyone really expect USAV to listen now and implement changes? And, if they do, shouldn't we question "why now?" because it would seem a reaction to the JVDA threat rather than a desire to put on a proper showcase for the good of the kids and the sport. |

I do think it interesting that there is a lot of gnashing of teeth over the JO Nationals and JVDA Nationals. If I was involved with a team that good I would
want the best too. However, the fact of the matter is that there are, by many factors, more teams and girls that don't make it to either of these national
tournaments than do. I guess if I was in charge of either the JO or the JVDA groups, I would spend more time devloping the grass roots.
For my daughter and her team, winning a tournament in Tennessee is huge. Playing well in a National Qualifier is a bonus. I would ask, is the purpose of either the JO or the JVDA to develop a "true champion" or is its purpose to develop volleyball nationwide. If the former, then I agree with the suggestions above and other proposals to change who qualifies and how. On the other hand, if it is to develop volleyball, I would do other things. Maybe having some "lesser teams" experience the championship is, in the long run, a good thing for volleyball overall.

alaxlhs wrote: Very perspicacious observation. Many others have made the same comment about the purpose of the JVDA and the JO's. Time was, USAV had a director
level person in charge of Grassroots Development. The VolleyVan was mentioned somewhere as a program that along with it. A lot of effort was put into funding
and development of material for growing the sport amongst those who are as yet unconverted. if you go to the web site now, under National Office Staff, you
will see that the Grassroots person has disappeared. My guess is that they have lumped that function into membership development.
The model that the USAV has employed is to place the JO's as the ultimate goal for ALL junior clubs, fully knowing that the vast majority of the teams
won't get within a whiff of JO's. It strikes me that the people who run the qualifiers, JO's etc. at USAV could not care less about the teams that
don't make it. That function, I believe, they leave to the RVAs or the Regional Volleyball Associations. So the responsibility for propagating the game
outside of the highest level is left to the regions.
And even on a coaching education level, the CAP programs really does not address the grassroots all that much. The IMPACT manual is geared towards junior
clubs and high school teams and not necessarily towards the grassroots activities, although to be fair, there are a lot fo program ideas that were developed
during the old days that are included in the IMPACT manual.
To me the disconnect is on two levels: on the National level with USAV and then with the junior representation at the national level because the junior rep
on the board would most likely be someone from one of the big clubs who are focused on the teams that do make it to JO's.

Good posts. But I think there is a distinction between "grassroots" development, which I take to mean the conversion of the unconverted and providing
more for the kids who already play, but play on teams that will never go to JOs.
The later kids are already converted. The point I believe alaxlhs makes is that all of this endless discussion regarding JOs and JVDA rarely involves these teams. I'm a HUGE fan of the philosophy behind the Volleyball Festival where the emphasis is on providing an end-of-year celebration for ALL the kids that are involved in this sport. I do believe there is a way to make such an event workable for both high-level Open teams and more developmental teams. I'm hoping that the change in location for the Volleyball Festival (and perhaps a continuing tweaking of the format) will attract more of the Open level teams back to this event and that a tournament of this type (that celebrates all levels of volleyball) can be a viable alternative to either JOs or JVDA. My daughter played on an Open level team at JOs this year. But if the proper changes in location and format can be made to the Volleyball Festival, I'd be happy to have her play there at the end of next year. In many ways, I believe the people behind the Festival really do try to (as John says) put on a proper showcase. |

To your point, I think the Invitational Tournament was supposed to be something along that line but it never took off because I for one was weary of the price
and the second class status that USAV gave it.
There were plenty of end of season volleyball celebrations: The Festival, AAU, Asics in Chicago, Indy Cup. No one needed to qualify for any of those and it was fun for all involved, whether it was an open level team preparing for JO's or teams looking to end the season. Somehow, those tournaments got denigrated in some people's views because it served no purpose but for players to have fun and enjoy the end of the season, i.e. no unified champions were crowned. |
