Ok, now that the club season is over - let's get into the high school gear! Who's going to be good this year? I think there may be some surpises out
there but I'm sure Xavier will be strong as always. Isn't Gilbert going to be down a bit due to graduation?

Two other teams that I think will be in the hunt for a Championship are Corona and Desert Vista. Both schools have large enrollments, recent success and their
coaches are returning. These schools had a number of players on EVJ 18/16's teams(both teams were top 2 at the AZ Qualifier and Open Regionals)( EVJ
18's only had 3 seniors on their roster).
Fun prediction: 1. Xavier Pros: Defending champ, outstanding coach, great setter and lots of talent, Future is Bright ! Challenge: picking a roster, a lineup and keeping everyone happy with their role in the program 2. Corona Pros: Strong Jr. OH's, a lot of talent, look stronger than last years team, returning setter Challenge: have not won it all, can they get the ring ??? 3. Desert Vista Pros: outstanding Jr OH, Terrific setter/libero, many talented players, outstanding coach Challenge: lost a returning starter MH to injury, can they peak at the tournament Gilbert will be strong, proven coach, Strong Sr. OH and Jr. MH. It will be a fun and interesting season Good luck to all

How is Desert Mountain looking, especially with Amanda Burbridge moving to Phoenix College?
I'm really looking forward to the season, especially since I now have a vested interest with my step-daughter in high school. She's planning to give basketball a go as well. Should be fun. |

I am pretty sure PC has made the announcement, either way she is already listed on the PC website. Does anyone know who she will have assisting her?
So anyone have any predictions on the smaller schools since everyone is a pro at the 5A-I and 5A-II, how about 1A-4A???????? |

Not a Pro | ||
AZVballer wrote:I'm not a pro at anything volleyball, except driving and writing checks. My previous post that contained my "fun prediction" was just for the sake of discussion. 4A-2 The defending champ is Notre Dame, undefeated last year in 4A-2, until someone beats them they are the champs. Arcadia should have a very talented lineup, with one of the best OH in the state and a few other high level club players. Seton Catholic(2 nd place last year) will be competitive, a very athletic senior OH and a knowledgeable coach that treats volleyball as his profession. |

I'm a little biased by having some of their girls (and their coach) in the same club as my step-daughter, but I like Sunnyslope in 4A-1. Their stellar
freshmen from last year will be even better this year.

I didnt mean any disrespect to anyone, so if it came off that way I apologize, just wanted to hear what some thought of the other classes. I guess I will throw
my opinions in here as well for the 4A class.
4A-I Should be a pretty open race with Chapparral losing Cat Highmark and also Coach Crowley, will make a big impact in defense of the title. Sunnyslope has fight but I am not sure where to put them just yet, they are always in it and have a great coach to teach them everything. But I do think Cactus has a great shot again this year, the team has pretty much stuck together and played club with one another which is a plus in my eyes, but we will see. Another team that has an outside shot at upsetting the big dogs could be Sandra Day O'Connor. Been getting better and better each season and should have a lot of returners next year. 4A-II As far as Notre Dame goes, I will agree they are the favorites coming in but I will have to agree with Arcadia being on top towards the end. Notre Dame lost a lot of quality players to graduation and I have seem their younger squads last year and not sure if they can step up as big, either way I wish them luck on their defense. Seton made a jump from 3A and didnt lose a step and I look for them to be near the top as well this season. Another team in the 4A-II that is always right up there is Greenway, they havent been deep into the playoffs but always seem to put up a fight in the postseason. Some of the teams may be exactly what some thought and some may be totally off the wall but this is what I will take from last year and this club season. Hopefully I wont be too far off. When we getting to 3A?!?! |

The 4As | ||

Here is what I have for 4AI.
Chaprral, Cactus Shadows, Cactus and Sunnyslope lost alot of good players. Chap lost 2 setters(in a 6-2 system), their go to OH, a good Lefty Oppo who filled the role well. They will still have ball control and a Middle. Cactus Shadows lost 6'0" lefty setter, a Oppo/OH, a Middle, and an L1 OH. I don't know what kind of ball control they have left over. Sunnyslope lost their Big L1, and their Defensive/Ball control L2, and a good Middle. They are young and experianced. But those are two huge holes to fill. Cactus lost 1 good Middle, maybe 2, some defense. But the still have their good Setter/OH. I think the Sunnyslope and Cactus program will come back the strongest. For the 4AII group; It will be hard for anyone to touch NDP or Seton. Although NDR lost 4 players( L1, M1, Setter(5-1), and Oppo) from their starting 6. They had a bench full of capable sophmores. The key element will be the setting. Seton just got a 6-2ish OH, and the rest of the team is pretty much intact ( I think). |

Any word on the open gyms that opened up this week? All the pressure has to be builing with tryouts on Monday? Didn't the smaller schools have tryouts this
week?

Tryouts for Xavier end tonight. Lots of girls on pins and needles, waiting to see who is placed where. I'm guessing one of the frosh will make varisty, one
or perhaps two on JV, and the rest will be on a good frosh team.

Xavier ALWAYS has a good showing at every level. Helps when you have over 100 girls trying out! But yeah they are lookin strong as usual this season.

Paije Pearson | ||

Just wanted to let you AZ folks know how Paije is doing at SDSU. I saw her this weekend cause she played quite a bit in their first tournament. She is a
beast! They had 4 frosh play, including her - and they all settled right into being D1 players. It wasn't the greatest win-loss wise cause SDSU went 1-2,
but they did show signs of being really great and just need a little more time I think cause they have a lot of underclassmen starters. There were several
Frosh/Sophs who stood out, and she was one; was spot on (as my Brit friends say). I cannot remember if she started, but if not, she subbed in pretty early and
she played a lot. I just started following SDSU a couple of years ago, but don't think they usually let the frosh see a lot of playing time. Judging by
this weekend - at least 3 of the frosh will be starters. Also, Leah Lathrop - their setter - is from AZ and she was great also, playing in a 6-2 with another
frosh. I predict it's gonna be a good year for the Aztecs!

Tara Mueller | ||

Another AZ volleyball alum that deserves a mention is Tara Mueller from Desert Mountain. Tara is a 6' Sophomore OH who this weekend started for Nebraska in
the AVCA tournament. In the upset 3-0 win over Stanford she had at least 15 kills.
