So let's have at it - what's going on all around the state in high school volleyball for the upcoming season? Tell us about local schools around you (including yours) - strengths, losses from last year, new faces to watch for, who will be the teams to watch in the various Divisions and Conferences... Or just discuss a topic you wish to bring up... or go out on a limb, and make some preseason predictions in your conferences, regions, districts, state... I know the varsity teams are not set yet, until the 1st week of August, but we all pretty much know MOST of who the varsity players at our various schools will be... For example, could someone familiar with defending state champion Mother of Mercy in Cincinnati discuss the affect of graduating (what was it?) 12, 13, 14 seniors??? Who does Mercy still have, and will they be competitive? Do they even make the Top 10 in Cincinnati Division 1 ? What will Mt Notre Dame, McAuley, Ursuline, St Ursula, Seton look like this year? Registered Member Posts: 26 (07/10/08 5:24 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I am just getting ready to have my oldest enter the high school realm so I a may not have the in depth perspective of some of the other NW Ohio posters. In the City League one thing to take into consideration is that a number of girls from Toledo Notre Dame and St. Ursula were key components of teams representing the OVR at Nationals in Dallas. Specifically two sophomores from SUA who played up with the TVC 18-1 team to add to their Varsity playing time from last fall. At this point in time the edge probably goes to NDA because of a greater number of returning upper classmen with a hunger to go farther in the state tournament this as well as adding some bright future prospects. Never underestimate SUA and keep an eye on them over the next few years if the incoming freshman class continues to build on their grade school and club success. In D-2 Toledo Central Catholic will be interesting to watch since they lost a lot of key seniors but still have some strong components. The Northern Lakes Leauge had some coaching changes at Perrysburg and Northview so it could be a transition year for both normally strong programs. Bowling Green will probably come out on top with Anthony Wayne and Southview potentially being spoilers. Looking forward to some other Toledo posters to confirm or criticize this synopsis! Hopefully the rest of the state will pipe up so we can give the Texas and California posters some competition.

Will someone step into their shoes? Ursuline Academy - Brooke Maher, Katie Schings Katie Schings will be a Sr this year, they lost Brynne Henderson, their Libero who was a Sr even though she played on Team Z 17 Orange. I think Brynne did an awesome job of reading the ball and will be some very hard shoes to fill. I think Ursuline will still definitely be a factor this year with Jeni Case, she has shown year after year that she can make a team perform at the top levels even when on paper they do not look as strong. MND, IMO, lost too many good starters and will be out of the running for a couple years but I could be wrong. Mercy without Harpenau will be interesting, is there some up and coming athletes that will fill her shoes too that are under the radar? Any underdogs that could come from out of nowhere and be a top contender? There were an awful lot of injuries of some of these top athletes too, I am disappointed with some of the clubs not treating conditioning and stretching as an important part of the practice! I think in some instances these girls will feel like they are 50 before they hit 25 or 30, maybe sounds like an exaggeration but I would say that is where we are heading if this continues.

I am mainly familiar with the GGCL teams. Ursuline has the be the favorite, with several key players returning such as Schings, Henderson, Kirsch, Moster, and Sensibaugh. Last year UA took MND to the wire at the Regional Finals. This may be the year they win it all. They also had a very talented JV team last year. I would still put MND right up there at the top. They may have graduated 12 Seniors from last years State Runner-Up team, but have a very strong incoming Senior class that didn't get a whole lot of recognition last year. Wilken and Deutch saw time at Middle but both were out at times with injury. Meyer will be steady on the Right and Otto on the Left. Tarantino will be solid at Libero and Morrissey will be the setter. I think the X-Factor for MND will be the health of Huser, who was the starting Outside 2 years ago when MND won state. She sat out all of last year with an injury. Add to that a very strong group of incoming Juniors who won the GGCL as Freshman and Sophomores. Mercy also lost 12 Seniors from last years State Championship team. I know Vorherr returns as Setter, but I'm not sure what other Seniors they have this year. Mercy also had a strong JV team last year. McAuley, Seton, and SUA all have some very good players returning, but I don't know if it will be enough to jump ahead of the other 3. But as everyone knows who follows GGCL volleyball, every league game is a dog fight and you can toss out the records when these teams play each other. As for the public schools, the talk around the club scene this year is that Lebanon will be very strong with several starters returning. Lakota West has some very good young talent, and Centerville has several key players returning. Also, watch out for GrayTribes daughter over at Sycamore. She may be the best play in town. There may be some sleepers out there, but only time will tell. I hope everyone enjoyed their Club seasons this year. See you all on the High School Courts.

I knew there was a lot of talented seniors who graduated, and wasn't sure what was coming up. And I agree, almost every GGCL match-up seems like a dog fight - never know who will "show-up"... As for some of the public schools in the District 16 Division I for Cincinnati, the usual contenders in the Top 10 are Mason, Anderson, Harrison, Sycamore, Oak Hills, the Lakotas (East and West), Colerain (leaving anyone out?) Mason - Cara Baarendse is always a strong player and will lead this Mason team to the top of the GMC, contending for the conference title. Not sure who else is there, honestly. Sycamore - I agree - when healthy Gaby Gray is likely one of the best all-around players in the city. Are Kissinger and Reedy still around? Coach Ulland will have the Aves ready, but will Gray have hitters to set to? Oak Hills - They graduated several seniors, including two offense weapons in Hedrick and Keehan - not sure who they have still, but always a solid team. Lakota West - 6'3" (or taller now?) Liz McMahon will be a strong force in the middle, and Lexi Dannemiller will be very good, but they graduated some OH's and defensive players - will they contend for the GMC title? Lakota East - Haley Lippert returns for her senior year, a strong hitter, and Jr Meredith Garda was 1st Team All GMC last year. Always a tough team, though look a little young at summer league. Colerain - Graduated Schumacher, Dufford, and Morgan - not sure who they have coming back. Anderson - Diana Schulte is a 4-yr starting varsity middle, and will be a force to reckon with as she leads Anderson to try for the FAVC Buckeye title. (same - not sure who else they have) Harrison - strong chance to not share the FAVC Buckeye with Anderson this year - may take it outright. Returning senior Kim Rosen, 4 yr varsity starting middle - always a battle to watch her and Schulte from Anderson; also have a junior class with much experience - setter Robben, OH's Hall and Volkerding, middle Jonas, libero Hoeffer - this team has everything it needs. Good luck to all teams - sorry if I left out any players of distinction - please alert us to who they are!

Don't expect anybody else to be strong. Centerville is not a player this year at all. Other teams may have some good kids, but lack of overall talent residing in the same HS is lacking for the years to come. Star

Jeni just has to manage the roster, the egos and the bench...not always that easy. Outside hitters Henderson (JR - Club Cincy, Goldschmidt SO - Z15O, Gottschall SR - Z17N, Sensibaugh SR - Classics 17R, Kirsch SR - Classics 17R, Prickell JR- Classics 16R, Engdahl SO - Z15N, Lohr SO- Classics 15R Middle hitters Schings SR- Z17O, Beer SO- Z15O, Marlatt JR- Z16O(transfer from Loveland), Raga JR- Z16O, Juenger JR- Classics 16R, Johnson- SO- Z15G DS/Libero Moster SO- Z15O, Sensibaugh, Schmitt SR- Z17N, Recker SO- Z15N, Weisenbruger SO- Z15N MND has good players coming back at every position also, just not the dominate Adams. Huser and Otto on the outside. Duetch and Wilken in the middle. Meyer and Morrissey (S) on the right.... I suspect that Lebanon and West will be competitive with the rest of the GGCL this year when Dannemiller returns from minor knee surgery. I believe that Mercy (two great players in Vorheer and Philpot), Seton (great ball control with Averbeck and Beckenhaupt but huge question at setter), SUA (bangers with Gagnon, Janszen and Williams) and McAuley (quality athletes in Criswell, Namaky, Vanardsdall and Krabacher) will all compete hard and have great competition between them and the public school elite.

For McAuley, we're talking a younger Krabacher, correct? Since sister Rachel graduated...what grade is this one? And Vanarsdall is returning from shoulder surgery about a year ago - any word on how she's doing?

Ursuline - No doubt the favorites at this point. As long as they stay healthy, the Lions will be the team to beat. [State Champion] 2a. Mercy - Lost a lot, but still the defending state champions. I would say they are a tossup with MND right now. They have one of the best all-around players in the city in Steph Vorherr (set for Team Z, OH for Mercy, and signed at Xavier as a DS/S) [Regional Runner-Up] 2b. MND - About even with Mercy. Lost a lot also, but too strong of a program to drop too far. [State Runner-Up] 4. Lebanon - Could be the first time in a while that a GGCL school loses in the regional tourney to a non-GGCL opponent [District Champion] 5. St Ursula - Should be next best in the GGCL [District Champion] 6. Lakota West - Very young and may struggle early, but by season's end, super soph's Dannemiller and McMahon could have this team making some noise. [Sectional Champs] 7. McAuley - Not very much coming back [Sectional Champs] 8. Seton - Should have solid defense, but the 2nd and 3rd contacts will be ugly... 9. Mason - Solid team last year returns a very good player in Cara Barrendse 10. Harrison - Returns three first-team FAVC players including player of the year Kim Rosen 11. Sycamore - Gray returns as one of the best players in the city, but lots of question marks behind her. Hawksdad, Kissinger and Reedy are both gone. This team will be very young (2-3 seniors and 2-3 juniors), so they may have to rely on some inexperienced yet talented sophomores. 12. Oak Hills - Lost everybody and the program is not quite on the level where they can reload after losing such a strong class. Also, who will be the best team(s) out of Dayton this season? Troy returns 6 all-league players including co-POY Karen Onuki District-champion Butler returns 3 starters including GWOC co-POY Brittany Holland Chaminade-Julienne - lost a lot but returns Treadway Piqua??? Don't know much about them but they had a solid squad last season There is also a rumor Magnificat got a pretty big transfer this past winter, so they may be a team to look out for from Region 2. Finally, does anybody know when they usually release the state pairings? It will be interesting to see if the GGCL schools will finally be forced to play in the state semifinals (it has been a while). edit: I just realized Lebanon is actually in the Dayton section, but you get the gist. If they are surrounded by decent talent, their team could be good. They're listed in no particular order.. Gabby Gray -- Sycamore Annalise Schmitt (sp?) -- Kettering Alter? MacKenzy Harper -- Lebanon Steph Vorherr -- Mercy Katie Madewell, Kylie Orr -- Ketting Fairmont Kim Rosen -- Harrison Christina Mensch (sp?) -- Hamilton Lisa Treadway, Mariah Nussbaum -- CJ Honorable mention to a senior that just graduated -- Brynne Henderson of Ursuline. There were times when I would just scratch my head in awe. Best of luck to you, Brynne, at MTSU!

Last year, Oak Hills had two teams playing, and I believe you will see some GGCL schools (Mercy, MND maybe), perhaps Colerain, the Lakotas (East and/or West), and some smaller schools like maybe Reading, Deer Park, Indian Hill... I asked our coach, but she was not given a list of schools as of Tuesday night. But should be a good cross section of schools there - some who may be on Harrison and Sycamore's schedules. So no insight on the Aves this year? Besides your DD, anyone of note coming back? Greg will certainly have them ready, no doubt. Haven't seen you guys on our preliminary schedule yet - I would miss that match-up if we can't get you scheduled.

I mentioned that to our coach, and she was looking into it. We also would not go from Sept 13th to Sept 20th with no matches on Tuesday or Thursday of that week. Thanks for the Sycamore insight, too... and graytribe - hope to see you some on Sunday. We leave Sunday afternoon to take my DD to Ohio Northern for the Ohio Elite Camp 20th-24th... has anyone out there had a player go to that camp in previous years? Any feedback on what it's been like? It's supposedly run with all college coaches from around the area...I would think that would be better than having college players working the camp...would love to hear some input.

"Oh, where is that?" and ""have you picked a school yet?" - she's meeting so many new girls, and says there are lots of very good players at the camp. Hopefully the college coaches who attend see some players they like - it's a great opportunity! She loves her roommate and they have a lot in common - both middles, both played for OVR High Performance - her OVR HP Coach was my DD's club coach in her 16's season - and they have both committed to play in college already. Will get more tonight and keep a running update - any input from other parents would be cool.
