Exhausting trip!
Oh, and MaunLani won the 14 national... they are one cool and collected team. Never get rattled no matter what; just chisel away if they are behiond, and before you know it they are in front.

I hadn't seen the MAVs that first day, and was definitely among the folks wondering what happened... now we know. I did watch the MAVs v. Tornados match,
which was a good one, with the MAVs looking strong by then. I taped the Vision - Long Beach Semi-final, and will get that up on the web as soon as I can.
Vision spanked them hard the first set, then was spanked back in sets 2 and 3. Long Beach is the best serving team I've seen, in addition to just great all
around play.

Congratulations to the Maunalani 14 Third Degree out of Hawaii on National Division Championship. As a parent of one of the girls on Toledo Volleyball Club
14-1 team that lost to them in the finals they did an excellent job of testing our girls serve receive and putting up some strong blocks and amazing digs that
kept TVC from pushing it into a game three.
Being fairly new to this JO Narionals volleyball world I was a little disappointed that we didn't test the Open field waters to see how this team would do against the top level. Even with the loss in the championship, it would be tough to see that the championship court experience could have been surpassed for these girls prior to heading into high school. Props and congratulations to all the 14's teams who provided some great competion over 4th of July week and good luck in the future. |

Thanks for the info about MAVs. I don't remember the players numbers but I do know that when we lost to MAVs last year in three, a big part of that loss
was MAVs play in the middle. So, I am sure it was a tough loss for the team. I am not surprised that MAVS figured out a way to win regardless. Hopefully, the
ankle injury isn't too serious. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Congrats to Long Beach. Long Beach. Long Beach was one of only four clubs that three teams in the top eight in the gold brackets (TAV, Vision and Wave) were the other ones. |

VBFan13,
I'm not sure what you mean by the following. Can you clarify? "Congrats to Long Beach. Long Beach. Long Beach was one of only four clubs that three teams in the top eight in the gold brackets (TAV, Vision and Wave) were the other ones." |

Maybe I counted wrong, but, when I looked at 18, 17, 16, 15, and 14 open at JOs and then looked at the top eight teams, I thought Long Beach was one of only
a handful of clubs that got three or more teams in the top eight.
For the JVDA, it was: KIVA 1st Alliance/Lions SPVB Milwaukee Sting MAVA Fusion (sorry, I missed one of your teams the first time around. Fusion had three teams in the top eight at JOs last year too. Great club. Nice parents. One of my favorite clubs)

Not to nitpick, but | ||

Fusion also had 3 teams top 8 at JVDA- 18s (5th), 16s (1st), 15s (8th). |

The final games in 14 Open...
|
For the FINAL, I had predicted Long Beach would be playing Austin Juniors 14 Mizuno. They were the only two teams with 8-0 recrds going into the gold bracket.
I tought they had the highest level of play and very eloquent and poinsed players. Long Beach had a great little libero and very aggessive serving.
Austin Juniors is very well coached. I liked watching her coaching style (Name is is Liz(?) I think). In the first two days of play, the serving was great, defense was flawless, and number Outside hitter #22 was absolutly on fire. On the final gold bracket play, Long Beach stayed tough and consistent; but Austin Junious got beat by A5 from Atlanta ( a team they beat they day before easily in 2) -- they beat themselves with service errors, defensive "shanks", and setting errors. Instead, Puerto Rico played Long Beach in the first game very aggressively. By far, PR dominated LB in the first game. Buy, then Long Beach took the second game by chipping away at PR...a team who doean't even run a middle. Everything goes to #10 the big outside hitter. All else is handled by the defense. Long Beach did win the third game 15-13.

Volleylife,
What a horrible post to place on a public message board. I find your analysis inaccurate and inappropriate. To call out teams and players by name and condemn their performance is classless. Four of the teams you contend under performed (Sunshine, MAVS, AJV and Woodlands Stars) finished top 5 in the country. Saying that MAVS "did not bring it" is as far off base as you can get. This team lost one of their best players on in their first match and could have used this as an excuse. Instead they found a way to advance in each round and nearly beat Purerto Rico on the last day. They BROUGHT IT in a big way. Your post sounds bitter. Remember your comments are directed toward 14 year-old girls. You should show more class.

Agree with MAVS KC. Let me get this straight, Volleylife... a certain team (that you predicted would reach the finals) "easily" beat another team in
pool play, but when it counted most, they lost to this team. NOT because this other team might have "brought it", but because your certain team
"beat themselves."
"So the two best teams did not go for the gold." How about just giving credit where credit is due? Another team stepped it up when it mattered most and beat them. Shouldn't we determine who the better team is via competition on the court? These are all good teams, and on any given day, anything could happen. To be sportsmanlike, give the winners their just due. You do a disservice to both teams - the winners deserve better than for someone to suggest that they didn't earn it, and the losers deserve better than to have their serving, passing, and setting errors called out on this forum. These are 14-year-old girls.

After looking up the facts, apparently 25-22, 25-23 meets the criteria of "beating another team easily."

I loved watching the 14U girls this season. There are many really great teams that are part of really great organizations, with parents you love to be around.
It will be a joy watching the many rivalries continue as the girls grow as players and become young women. Best of luck to all these girls as they enter high
school.

Thanks for posting the video. I watched the Vision / Long Beach game three match - it was nice to watch. Maybe next year, we will get to play some of the west
coast talent. How tall is number 15 for vision anyway?
The video reminded me of our game three vs. KIVA - we made 7 errors to give KIVA their last seven points in the match after leading10-8 in the third game. It was painful to rewatch. After looking at this video, we now have something in common with Vision as they probably feel the same way:) But, like us, I bet they are proud they got as far as they did. We are still working on our video for the web. I am traveling this week, but maybe next week, I will work on it. |

Vision/Long Beach grudge match...
|
Hey Torami, thanks for posting the video...I didn't get the Vision/Long Beach game...my camcorder was back at the hotel charging.
The Vision/Long Beach match was definitely a grudge match. Both teams were at the Spokane qualifier with Long Beach losing a match to Vision one evening then having to play each other again the following morning. Long Beach won in three the next day which knocked Vision out of qualifying. Knew it would be a tough but exciting pool at JO's with these two battling each other!

We have a player 6'4" on our team and number 15 looked like she could be that tall (in the video). Ours is a middle. Their's looked like an
outside playing all the way around. She moves pretty well in the back row. I am sure that many on the court will be names we will see on Tawa's various
lists in the near future.
Way to go LB. I think someone from LB predicted a very strong LB team before the season started. If my memory serves correct, some of these players also played 14s last year and stayed at the 14 level. Anyway, the prediction of a strong team holds true. Torami, what happened to the Tornados. Obviously, they lost to good teams, but I was still surprised they didn't make the final eight. Did you catch any of their matches?

VB13 you are correct...Long Beach had three players that "played up" last season and stayed at the 14's this season. Their two outsides and the
setter...

I may be off on my assessment, but the way I saw the Vision-Beach match is that #15 was one of the reasons Vision won the first set. She played all around and
was very effective hitting outside. Starting with match two, they served laser beams straight to her, and while she got them up, it kept her from being quite
as involved in the offense. She could be taller, but I never stood next to her to be able to tell for sure. Beach's serves were either hard jumpers or
extremely accurate floaters... tough!
I taped a couple of the earlier Tornados matches (Skyline... Vision), and saw most of their match with the MAVs, but the schedule didn't let me see their key Friday matches. I was impressed with the way they came back and played great on Saturday when I'm sure they were disappointed. I love that team. lb4me, if you want a DVD of the match with Vision, just send me a PM. |

I didn't see game one or two. I only saw her pass a couple times in game three and did okay.
