Will this lead to an improvement of talent on the North teams? Will the Jrs have an 18s North team? How will the Eclipse and TCA Austin be impacted? My hunch is the Eclipse program will suffer because they do not offer the same recruiting opportunities that TCA offers to it's players. Second question - Other than the 17s fantastic performance at JO's, many of the Austin Jr. teams have not performed well at JOs. Will we see a major shake up with their 15s, 16s and 17s Mizuno teams next year? The 18's have the opportunity to repeat as national champs if they can keep their players together. But at the other age levels, it appears that AP and TCA have had an impact on the Austin Jr. program. With tryouts only 2 weeks away, the movement of players from clubs should be something to watch. Watch for the Jr.s to be much more aggressive with the recruitment of players.

Do you mean TCA players are less likely to jump to AJV than Eclipse due to the recruiting that TCA offers? I would imagine that in most cases the teams who had bad seasons or perceived poor coaching will be subject to the biggest opportunity to lose players. Also, with the continued economic impact of high fuels costs, I would guess that the clubs that offer the best preceived value for the $$ will be the clubs that come out on top. Seems like I heard a story about one of the clubs in Austin submitting unexpected bills to their players near the end of the season...am thinking that could affect them adversely as well. Fun? Eclipse begins in 2 weekends! Dad, I was only speculating on the impact of the JRs new facility in Northwest Austin. I think the Jrs underestimated AP last year and TCA to an extent They have moved up their tryouts this year to compete for the older players that went to AP, in my opinion. If the Jrs are committed to the north Austin area, I think the Eclipse or TCA will be hurt. I also think this will continue a dilution of volleyball talent in the Austin area. The 17 Austin Jr. national champs are an exception. I don't think there is room for 4 major clubs in Austin.

The trend will always be who ever carries the most high school and college coaches from the area on their staff will win the numbers battle. AJV and APV both had the highest number of HS coaches on their rosters and they were the two largest clubs in the city. It's really not any more complicated than that. Kate Zora shows up at eclipse the numbers rise because some of her present and furture athletes follow. Look into how many kids in the APV program were from Hays, lake travis, georgetown, etc. mddle schools and high schools. How many at TCA from round rock, how many at eclipse from westwood. The trend will show that kids follow thier coaches. So to answer your question the facility wont hurt these clubs unles it draws more HS coaches from that area.

It's all about the coaching staff... By my count AJV has lost 3 Mizuno coaches in the past year. What impact does that have on top of diluting the staff by adding more teams out north? Life is tough... even tougher if you are stupid!

I am pretty sure AJs draws players from all over the central Texas area. Other Austin clubs have had players from outside the area. I remember a few years ago, AMV had a couple of players from San Angelo, I think. I presume players make the decision to make that type of drive because they are seeking the training and exposure that will get them what they want. Years ago when my daughter was playing soccer, I knew of a girl who lived in Austin and played for the best club team in Houston. They made the drive 3 times a week to Houston for practice. She would do homework in the car while her Mom drove. not to discredit their accomplishment Then why bring it up???? Fun? You mean Volleyball is supposed to be fun?? A lot of interesting questions in the original post from VB Watcher, but I found this sentence above illustrative of some strange judgement. Austin Juniors actually put at least one team in the top division of EVERY JO level from 12s to 18s. (just to be explicit: 12s - National, 13s - National, 14s through 18s - Open). 14s ALSO qualified their Navy team for American and 17s ALSO qualified "BOTH" Navy and North for American. One should not discount the "performance" that got these teams at JOs. In particular, besides the expected comments about "oh, Lone Star is a strong region"... remember that for 14s-18s, this includes OPEN which represents the top 28 teams in the country for their respective age groups and independent on strength of region. So lets see how they did in the respective top divisions: 18s - 26th 17s - 1st 16s - 26th 15s - 19th (two way tie) 14s - 5th (4 way tie) 13s - 5th (4 way tie) 12s - 11th (2 way tie) Additionally: 17s American - Navy 13th (4 way), North 31st (two way). 14s American - Navy - still playing but no worse than 31st (two way) .... (if I read the AES right). No other Austin club sent a team to a top division in any age group.... in fact, I think there were only two other clubs that sent a single team each to JOs at any division (TCA 15s - American, APV 16s - National). Elsewhere, a question was posted about AJV 16 Mizuno and "what happened". I will post on their season after some more reflection... likely later this weekend... the perspecitve above is, however, a backdrop for the assessment. Last Edited By: Woody 07/05/08 8:16 AM. Woody, is a fine person, but he is a partisan when it comes to either Westwood or the Jrs. I mean sometimes I wonder if he in in charge of media relations for the organization. I don't think I said the Jrs. were not the top club in the Austin area. Fact is the point of my post was to speculate the impact of their serious move into Northwest Austin with the new facility. But, I do think the Austin Jrs have been impacted by TCA, Eclipse and more so by AP. And yes, I believe the Jrs performance in JOs validates that presumption on my part. Woody did his usual of stating some facts without including the key facts -- like what division the Jrs team played in and how may teams were in the division. For example 26 may sound good, except when there are only 28 teams. And yes, the north team made it, but I think there may be a simple explanation - - - JVDA. Woody, notwithstanding, I believe the Austin Jrs. organization realize that their performance has been impacted the past 2 seasons and they are attempting to address the issues problems. The move to Northwest Austin and moving up tryouts are examples. I also think you will see some major changes in the composition of their older teams next year - except 18s which will be awesome again if the current players return. The 16s and 17s teams (current 15 and 16 mizuno teams) may need some major overhauls based n their dismal performance in Dallas. Again JVDA may have had an impact on the division these teams ended up in at Dallas (along with the 18s Mizuno) team. Just my partisan thoughts on the subject.

The results I listed were by division... Here there are again (and hopefully easier to read for some): So lets see how they did in the respective top divisions: (added the Division explicitly below, since the word "top", now highlighted in the original sentence from before was ignored... also added total number of teams in (total) below). 18s - Open: 26th (28) 17s - Open: 1st (28) 16s - Open: 26th (28) 15s - Open: 19th (two way tie) (28) 14s - Open: 5th (4 way tie) (28) 13s - National: 5th (4 way tie) (48) 12s - National: 11th (2 way tie) (48) Additionally: 17s American - Navy 13th (4 way), North 31st (two way). 14s American - Navy - still playing but no worse than 31st (two way) .... (if I read the AES right). Regarding 26th for 18s and 16s, in Open, yes, there were 28 teams. For 16s, except for 3 at-large teams, 25 of those teams QUALIFIED at one of 9 National Qualifiers, which typically had about 48 teams each. (I don't know how many 18 at-large there were, but I am sure it was less than 5) So, assuming all National Qualifiers were attended by teams that attended 2 NQs (a very conservative assumption) that would mean that only 28 of over 200 teams that tried were even in attendance at JOs in Open. Further, it is important to know that these are the 200+ teams who even tried to be in the top 28... most teams don't even try... and for good reasons. Note: How did I get 200?.... 9 NQs x48 teams attempting to qualify per NQ =432 qualifying attempts; 432 attempts /2 attempts per team = 216 unique teams. And yes, the north team made it, but I think there may be a simple explanation - - - JVDA The North team made it by qualifying at Regionals. How exactly did JVDA affect that? Are you asserting that because AJV (1st) , Extec (27th) , AVA (18th) , and Tornados (13th) all qualified for Open that the 17s field at Regionals was diluted? I am pretty certain that AJV and Tornados qualified in Open last year as 16s, pre-JVDA...so, there could be some small influence there... but it should have applied equally to TCA, Eclipse and APV. The 16s and 17s teams (current 15 and 16 mizuno teams) may need some major overhauls based n their dismal performance in Dallas. If finishing 19th, and 26th, respectively, out of the top 28 teams in the country is "dismal", then what does it mean to finish in the bottom half of the National division? I certainly don't consider either one "dismal", but, if one were to be comparative, I would assert that 28th out of 28 in Open is a far better finish than bottom half of the National division. Note: I do not mean to disparage any team that attended JOs at any level... Congratulations are in order for anyone who even got there. Do I think that changes should happen on any given team from year to year? Yes. In my 16 years of club, I have never seen a team stay the same from year to year. Whew, talk about my post going right over your head. Your presumption is incorrect - - I intended to write, partisan. It was with the intent that just once Woody might acknowledge that his posts are also the posts of a partisan poster. But no such luck and really no surprise. Woody, my point was to show that the Austin Jrs have declined a bit in the past 2 years and that they are being assertive in addressing that. Your reply was the typical all is well in Jr. land - - - - the Austin Jrs placed at least one team in JO's in each age group. Of course an analysis of the results of the Jr. teams in Dallas validates my original premise. Some may not want to read it, but the results by the 15, 16 and 18's team was dismal and disappointing because the top Mizuno teams from the top Austin are club are expected to be much better. Worse was the lack of competitiveness by the teams. In the 16's 7 match losses, they only won 2 games and were swept in 5 of those matches - most scores not even close. 18's also struggled, but at least averaged 1 win in each match they lost. My prediction is the Jr.s will have overhaul their top teams or lose even more ground to AP. Back to my questions - what will be the impact of the Jrs having a facility out North and moving up their tryouts?

I have been a first hand recipient of the value offered by the service from AJV. As long as that service continues to be the best value I can find, I will be supportive. If I thought I could get better service elsewhere, I would go... that is hardly "partisan". Every year I re-evaluate this position. Last year, in particular, I went to the organizational meetings for the new clubs. The choice was extremely clear... but then again, I have the benefit of experience so I know what to look for. I will continue to evaluate the overall situation, and at this moment, I see no evidence that the service from AJV is in jeopardy' The choice is still very clear. Perhaps you could put some facts on the table that validate these statements: the Austin Jrs have declined a bit in the past 2 years...lose even more ground to AP. BTW, I had to laugh at my typo on Sigmund FREUD... I have a friend by the last name of FREUND and I constantly spell it wrong the other way... Qualifeying in Open for JO's is a huge accomplishment. Eye am sure AJ 16's would have fared better in National or American, but they deservedly got to play w/the big girls because they succeeded at a national qualifeyer that had an "open" to all comers entry system. They prevailed as others failed. If you have ever seen your own daughter play at the Open level at JO's, you would know the difference. You cannot just watch one or two matches to get the true feel of it. The difference is sizable. Every match is grueling. In any particular year, 26th in Open is a level that over a thousand teams will NEVER get to. This year and belief meyene, Eye saw teams in 14 Open that would have beaten qualifeyed teams in 16 American. The difference is that big. About the 48 teams in Open Qualifeyers reference - it's queyete the shame that so many clubs were afraid of the Open level of competition and did not enter in that division. The team/club Woody is so reyeghtfully admeyering is a part of the source of that fear. The availability of entry was there and it is not Woody's fault that so many avoided it. Registered Member Posts: 27 (07/06/08 5:50 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tryouts in July the week after JO's and a 7-month season...(and considered normal)..., rabid (I picture club directors foaming at the mouth) recruiting beginning right after JO's (and probably even during...a little flirtatious compliment here, a "friendly" chat with a neighboring club's parent there, a pause at another club's court to "sympathetically" gloat over their demise). Of course, there's the inane arguing over a 26th place finish instead of a 19th, and parents boasting how they are ready to shop their daughter all around town looking for the best deal. To the rest of us on the outside, this argument sounds as bizarre as the USAV vs. JDVA thread. Nationals just ended a really long season. Let it go for awhile: find a secluded beach somewhere and read a good book. It will do you all some good.

Thanks Eye. I have a whole season of end line stuff... you happened to catch me just looking for something different to break the monotony. Of course, as you know, the vantage point I chose had the secondary (or was that primary?) benefit of allowing me to "help" the ref. Actually, courts 3 and 4 turned out to be perfect video fodder because the back of the bleachers for court 1 provided great tops down viewing (and was sufficiently far away that I could no longer see what the ref was missing ).
