It's interesting that the conflict between winning and development is so well understood and accepted in English football that it isn't even subject to
debate. The same conflict exists in US volleyball, but there is no doubt we would debate it to death, and to the detriment of our girls.

A bit of a difference though between football (soccer) and volleyball. Kids, in massive numbers, start playing competitive soccer at 4 or 5 years old (maybe
younger). I think we're still struggling with finding the proper form of a volleyball game that will get kids that young playing, learning and developing
the skills they'll use later.
We had our first two 5 year olds join our volleybees program this past season. They were a blast to have in the sessions. I'd love to hear from some of you what kinds of things you did with the really young ones to keep them interested and engaged in volleyball. BTW, I love the new Mizuno First Touch 70g and 140g balls for the young kids. We're going to experiment this summer with low nets and smaller courts to see if we can't get the youngest kids actually "playing"! |
