This ad has been approved by PrepVolleyball.com.* =================================================== Challenge of the Champions Volleyball Match to be held in Naperville Kyushu Bunka Gakuen High School of Nagasaki, Japan will play the Sports Performance 18 Elite team (Aurora) at Neuqua Valley High School, June 25th at 6:00pm. Kyushu Bunka Gakuen has won the Japanese National High School championship 11 times and has reached the national title match on 18 separate occasions. They have a total of 26 top four finishes in the past 27 years. The Japanese are widely recognized throughout the world as having the finest volleyball skills at the youth and junior level. The Sports Performance 18 Elite team is currently ranked #1 in the United States by Prepvolleyball.com and has a record of 64-0 for the 2008 club season. Leading Sports Performance is Kelly Murphy (Joliet Catholic) who was the 2007 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year. Besides Kelly Murphy the Sports Performance 18 Elite team roster consist of, Megan Barnicle (St. Francis, Wheaton), Julie Chin (Naperville North), Lettys Espinoza (Proviso West), Michelle Kocher (St. Francis, Wheaton), Mollie Kolosky (Wheaton Warrenville South), Katie Post (Streamwood), Colleen Ward (Naperville North), Christine Wu (Naperville North), Rebecca Zlabis (Wheaton Warrenville South). Sports Performance has won a total of 61 AAU& USAV National Championships since 1980 including the USAV 18 Open championship eight times, which is a national record. Was watching the USA Woman's Gymnastic team tryouts...So very pressure packed and exciting AND not a participant over 5'6"...take that you frontrow volleyball trees.

Julie Chin played for Christine Wu at Libero and Lettys Espinoza played for Becca Zlabis at Outside Hitter during the third game. It was power versus finesse. First game SPVB had 5 serves out of play. The Japanese team, which was shorter, was pretty skilled in tooling off the block although they still were blocked many times. In the second game, SPVB was down 20-15 and got their act together to tie it and then close it out. The Japanese team hardly made unforced errors such as hitting or serving out of bounds. They still did get aced a number of times. They had no answer for Murphy's ten foot kills from the right side and Ward's bombs and back row hits from the ten foot line. Wu did a great job getting to many balls. After the Japanese team got a kill, they would all run around in a circle and do this little weave that was very entertaining to watch. There was definitely a height differential in favor of SPVB.

One of my daughters laughingly commented that she knew what SPVB was going to be working on next practice. That's how rough it was. While I love Wu (I've seen her play since middle school when she and Ward played against my middle daughter), Julie Chin had an outstanding third game and made more 'plays' than Wu did in the first two (though that has to do with how the game 'comes' to a person). On another topic, the announcer did a great job with the Japanese names ... or at least was creditable enough to fool us Americans. My only complaint is that at one point in the match, he took the opportunity to 'wish luck' to all the SPVB teams going to Nationals. In my opinion, he should have wished luck to ALL the teams going to Nationals as there were girls from other clubs besides SPVB who were in attendance and who will be going to Nationals ... be it Louisville or Dallas. A minor point I know (and I know he works for SPVB). However, I know a couple of girls who attended who were put off by it and, if SPVB wants to encourage attendance at these sort of things, they shouldn't be so SPVB-myopic.
