what to watch for at JOs? |
Lead | |
|
I'm going to check out a couple of teams that I've got an interest in (know a player or two and some coaches), but would like to know if there are some
"you should really go see this team play" type teams. Thanks.

Is there something that you really enjoy seeing?
An average to smaller height team that plays Big? Outstanding setters? A ballcontrol team that just won't go away? Impressive Middles? Something else? |

What area are you from? Who do you see on a regular basis? There should be some quality matches in 16 Open. There are lots of closely matched teams that will
battle it out there.

If you will be in Dallas while the 18s are playing, you should really try to catch an SCVC 18 Nike, Imi Ike 18s, or Sunshine Hotshots match - Falyn Fonoimoana,
Kanai Herring, and Alex Jupiter are supreme talents on the outside and rightside.
Catch an Amarillo Elite 181 or TAV 18 Asics match if you want to see a great setter - Brianne Barker and Kelsey Mahoney will amaze you with some of the plays they make. Amanda Gil (Vision 18 Gold) and Michelle Bartsch (Southwest Illinois 181) are about as good as it gets for middles. Both would be good to try to catch. If you want to see a supremely athletic team, catch TCA 18 3rd Degree Black. They will make plays that no other team can make. |

Interesting opponents in pool 2 of the 15 National Division. Asics Rainbows from Hawaii will match up with Asics Metro from Memphis. A player on Asics Metro
is Top 59 Freshman Scarlet Gable, who moved to Tennessee from Hawaii, and started her club career with a few members of the Rainbows team at the Jammers club.
BTW, the Hawaii team also boasts one of the Top 79 Sophomores in Sarah Palmer. This is the Asics Rainbows team that won 14 National last year. I have my own opinion, but the fact that the Rainbows team could/should probably be in Open has been brought up in John's rankings of top 15s teams.

Rainbow - Memphis Metro
We played Memphis Metro twice at Asics Junior National last week - once in pool play and once in the playoffs. Scarlet Gable was quite good. I think that the second Rainbow team was there too. Although Memphis Metro didn't face off against the second Rainbow team, it would appear based on scores against common opponents that the second Rainbow team and the Memphis team would have had quite the battle. |

I would go watch Texas Tornados. They have a some outstanding players. One of their outsides is awesome and she is a sixth grader.
Check out Texas Assault. They have a middle who is extremely athletic (won the national punt, pass, kick competition a couple years ago). Sunshine is a fun team to watch. A very spirited group of girls. |

I like JOs because the tournament is so much smaller in regards to courts in action, especially on the first couple and last
couple of days. If I don't have specific players/teams I want to see, I usually head over to the higher age groups and look for where the college coaches
are standing.
There has been a lot of coverage about the Northern Lights 16-1 team. I would think that would be a great team to watch. I am also interested in watching players that are on the top HP teams. http://www.usavolleyball.org/highperformance/08WJNTT.asp http://www.usavolleyball.org/highperformance/08GYNT.asp http://www.usavolleyball.org/highperformance/08GSA1Roster.asp

I agree with '13'. Tornados are just a great group and fun to watch. The sixth grader gets lots of offers of adoption; She turned ours down.. sigh.
I think the 14's are just a great age, because you are watching the girls as they really come into their own. The differences in the styles of play are very apparent at that age, since it isn't -quite- as much all about the the big terminating hit. If you get a chance to see Tornados (or MAVs or AJs) play Sunshine (amazing defense) , you will see two great young teams with different styles, which is really fun. |

Should be very competitive and very exciting to watch. There are many outstanding teams from all over the country such as Texas Advantage, Encinitas, KC Power,
Mizuno Long Beach......the list goes on and on.
