Congratulations to Caroline Adams ('09 Furman) and her team Skyline RoShambo on getting to the 17 Open final. She was a key contributor all weekend to
Skyline's success and will be a strong addition to the Paladin program.

2008 recruiting classes
|
Congrats to several SoCon schools by being recognized by PV.com for their 2008 recruiting classes. CofC and Davidson received "high honorable
mention" while Furman received "honorable mention". As a gauge among all D1 schools, PV listed the Top 30 followed by a grouping of 15 schools
rated "highest honorable mention" followed by a grouping of 20 schools "high honorable mention" and then a grouping of 30 schools as
"honorable mention".

Recruiting 2008 | ||

Now that JO's are over and incoming classes are almost complete, what about the North / South predictions. Preseason is around the corner, with the
conference splitting into divisions as well as the addition of a new team, does this help/hurt the North rankings? Looks like the South Division has the
stronger recruiting class so how will this play to the ultimate rankings? Any thoughts--- Cougamonga?

predictions | ||

Stats
I think we need you to get us started on predictions. I think UNCG would be a good pick. I also expect Davidson to field a strong squad. I was ready to predict a fall from the the top of the heap for CofC but the addition of the MB from Mercer has me reconsidering. I'm tempted to follow my heart and pick Furman but for fear of a jinx I never pick my own team. I do like the athleticism and flexibility of FUs incoming class. It may take a while to find the best combination. |

The North and The South | ||
|
Based on player graduations and strength of recruiting classes, I think the South may be the slightly stronger division. I like UNC Greensboro to finish on top
of the North division. Only one key loss to graduation, Katherine Hart, for a team that made the conference tournament finals 2 years in a row. App State
finishes second. They lose the POY for '07 and their setter but coach Ginipro will find a way to stay near the top. Now it gets dicey. UTC loses their top
5 statistical offensive players but return one of the top liberos in the country with Lisa Newberry. Elon loses their setter and several strong front row
players. Samford is an unknown to the conference. I'll go with Samford third with Elon and UTC in a dogfight for the fourth slot. West Carolina lost,
arguably, it's best player, Meredith Harmon, to graduation. With many veteran players returning, however, they have a shot at getting to the fourth spot.
The South, I believe, will be a hard fought battle among, CofC, Davidson, and Furman. Davidson boasts strong recruiting classes the last 2 years but CofC has ranked right with the Wildcats. CofC has lost the most talent to graduation but return the last 2 FOY players. Injuries may have hurt Davidson last year but graduation has cost them their top 3 statistical diggers. They do, however, return their setter and a lot of talent. Thought Furman had the most talent last year but the Paladins lose their setter and top attacker. I think players that may have played supporting roles for the Coug's will elevate their games and new setter, sophomore, Cole Dawley, will be the key to quarterbacking the team to a first place finish in their division. Davidson will grab second and Furman third. Ga Southern has a new coach and should make the post season tournament with a fourth place finish. Wofford and The Citadel will battle it out for the fifth slot. |

North/South | ||

The South is the stronger division by virtue of being comprised of the two top teams in the conference CofC and Furman, combined with what
should be an improved Davidson. After this tier there is a considerable drop in the level of play in the south division to what are possibly the weakest three
teams in the conference. CofC gets my nod as the team to beat. Year in and year out they just seem to get it done (good recruiting classes don't hurt).
Furman comes in second. They are big and powerful, Davidson ranks third (another good recruiting class), I am not sure Georgia Southern will be that much
improved from last years record (new coach so there will be some rebuilding -- that takes time). They will make the tournament by virtue of having Wolford
fifth and Citadel sixth in their division.

Let me start with the North.
I think UNC-G will finish on top. The battle for second could come down to Elon and App. St. I think App. St. will be rebuilding and Elon will take a step up. Despite challengers at second, it will be a distant second behind UNC-G. I don't know much about Samford and only time will tell, but I believe they will fight it out for fourth with UT-Chattanooga. Chatt lost a lot, but still should be better than Western Carolina. Samford will be testy for their opponents, but will finish no better than third, no worse than 5th. The South is the hardest to judge. I have a hard time picking someone other than Charleston, as they have done nothing but win as of late. To be honest, I thought Furman had the best team on paper last year, perhaps the last two years, but they always seem to fall short. Charleston has another good class coming in, but their senior class was a class above all other classes. That class has not been replaced. I really like Davidson. Don't go by their record last year. First they started 4, sometimes 5 freshman, including their setter. On top of that, they had major injuries and weren't that deep off the bench. They may have been playing the best volleyball the last 2 weeks of the season. Their incoming class would probably start for virtually every team in the conference and they don't need all but one to start. Time will tell, but I like them to take a huge jump. Charleston's class is strong again and coupled with their strong class the year before should contend again. I think where they stumble is that the kids that graduated just refused to lose. Will the new kids have the same mentality? That's the question. Furman lost a lot, including their setter. People underestimate how tough it is to win with a freshman or new setter. Ask Davidson last year. No matter how good they are, it's tough to win with a new setter. Georgia Southern will be improved only by the fact they have hired a good coach and will have stability. It will take them some time to rebuild. It's tough to say where Wofford will be. Corey always has them playing well at home. The Citadel...well it's the Citadel. Tough place to recruit, to place to win. Top to bottom, I think the South schools 1-4 are stronger than their northern counterparts, but 1-6 the north is stronger. Here goes: UNC-G App. St. Elon UT-Chatt Samford Western Carolina Charleston Davidson Furman Georgia Southern Wofford Citadel

What a wonderful opportunity for Liz, Branagan and Carrie! I have not had the chance to watch Carrie yet (after some research, I'd say her background speaks for itself), but I know Liz and Branagan are great choices to represent the SoCon, and more importantly, the U.S.A.! Congratulations to all three. |

Experience | ||
|
I took a look at the 08 rosters (all except UNCG-they haven't posted it yet-someone wake them up) to see the team composition relative to youth vs
experience with youth being frosh/sophs. Davidson has the largest roster with 16 players and 10 "yutes" (my apologies to My Cousin Vinny). Georgia
Southern has a roster of 14 and 10 yutes. The Citadel may be the youngest team with a roster of 12 and 9 yutes. Wofford may have the most experienced roster
with a roster size of 12 with only 5 yutes. Every team has at least one senior except CofC. With a roster of 15, the Coug's have 11 yutes. CofC takes the
floor today for their first practice. Several teams have already been out there. Let's get the conversation going.

Odds and Ends | ||
|
2009 commitments have started to trickle in. Noticed 2 commits from top 17O clubs App State picked up OH from Cleveland Renaissance and Samford a S from MAVA.
Several Texan 2009s visited SoCon schools this summer.
Big news that I haven't seen mentioned in that Samford picked up one MTSU's top players as a transfer. RH Adams. Apparantly will start Cumberland law school this fall. Saw that App State coach Matt Ginapro received a contract extension. He has been active on the 2009 recruiting circuit first at UVA and now at App State. Seems a nice fellow and good coach. Hearing that Furman's 2008s are looking good. Does the SoCon have an all Fr team? If so I'd expect several might contend for that honor. |

the coaches have spoken
|
It's UNCG in the North and College of Charleston in the South. Pre season All Conference selections have been made. I don't think CofC deserves the
strength of support they received but it's only the coaches and what do they know? I still think it will be a dog fight in the South with Furman and
Davidson looking to unseat the Coug's.
