memorable coaches gift ideas please |
Lead | |
|
I am hoping for ideas from coaches/parents for an end of season gift for two tremendous coaches that my daughter played for this season. If you are a coach
and have a gift that stood out for you or anyone else that has a suggestion I'd love to hear from you. Thanks...

Coach's Gift | ||

One year we gave "the coach who has everything" a donation in his name to Coaches Curing Cancer. http://curingkidscancer.org/cdonate.php
A later thought - with the way things are, coaches might really appreciate gas cards as gifts!

I don't know how photo-happy your team parents are, but one year I received a "yearbook" with various pictures of our team. Some were on the
volleyball court, some were during down time, some were at dinner, at the hotel, etc.. You get the idea. I still pull it out at least once every 6 months to
quickly look it over.

Coach Gift | ||

Things to get:
An individual card from a parent is always good. You can always expect a team gift but when a parent goes out of their way to slip a card in my hand, that is always nice. I would have to say a little scrap book with a photo and a note from each player is my favorite. But that is very dependent on our much each player liked the coach. I had one great season and that gift hit my heart in a big way - with the things the kids wrote. Gift cards go a long way - now-a-days you can get a visa card to cover everything - Oh, and go big - I don't want to sound greedy but if you put in $30 each, that will still be a minimal amount compared to the time the coach put in. Things to avoid: Autographed ball (where's a coach to put it?) Huge autographed team photo (where's a coach to put it?) |

You didn't specify male or female. As team mom, the three gifts I received the most thanks about were a small handmade photo album that included all the
girls photos, a travel VB ball bag embroidered with the coach's & club name (she still carries that now when she travels several years later) and my
personal favorite (also for a female coach) a volleyball oriented charm bracelet with a couple of special-order personalized charms including her name, which
was unusual, the team name and the year. One year I also did one of those fold-up canvas camping chairs we all carry in our cars, but had the girls sign the
seat with paint pens and labeled it "coach". No one ever sits in the coach's chair without permission then!

I actually liked the autographed mini-volleyball I got from the first team I head coached. It still sits on my mantelpiece.
I have gotten individual cards from the girls with a sincere note from them, I keep every one of them. Just as a reminder about why I do this. I also got a digital photo frame with a mini-disc of a bunch of volleyball pictures from my teams. That was awesome. |

The best gift would be to send my wife some flowers and thank her for letting me be away for countless hours for practice and numerous weekends and national
holidays for tournaments. She would be floored.

For me, I've always loved a gift that is a "memento of the season." Probably my favorite was a book with a page by each player... included a
picture, and the player wrote about what she would always remember about the team, the coach, and the season. Still blows me away when I look at it.
But I'm older. Honestly, for some of these young coaches, give them cold hard cash! (Okay, and maybe a picture of the team.) |

Fave gift | ||
|
On my work desk, I have sitting a 5x7 store-bought frame with a team photo. The photo is nothing fancy, the kind taken when a team just finished playing
and gathered mid-court for a photo op. Someone wrote the team name and the year it was taken (2003). For some reason, I've always kept this out when all
other gifts have been used, stored in boxes or framed on walls.

Great ideas | ||

Wow, I really do love this board. Thanks for some great ideas, and I am going to include sending one of the coach's wife some flowers. I think that is a
great idea...
We have been thinking about a scrapbook of sorts with photos but after the comments here I'll include something written from each of the girls. Thanks |

If your coach has a special hobby (other than volleyball) or something s/he really likes, get a gift pertaining to that. We got our coach something no one
else would want (a basket filled with something unusual he likes to eat). He was floored anyone remembered him mentioning it in passing at the beginning of
the season. We also included a gift certificate to one of his favoite restaurants, a tshirt from regionals signed by the players and a framed photo also
signed by the team. He will also get a DVD of pics (as will all the players) from the season set to music (as soon as Nationals are over).

I think the best or most memorable gift I've gotten was last year when my 15s team got my husband and I a leather volleyball shaped notebook. Inside each
girl had written us a little something. Favorite memories, thank you's etc. That was something that we will keep forever and will always go back and
read. Actually I am thinking about having my team this year right memories in it as well. That was probably my favorite gift because it was meaningful and
special.

Last year my team gave me three things and all of them were very special:
First was a gift certificate to a four star winery/restaurant; they wanted to be sure I spent time alone with my husband, so this included movie tickets and babysitting for my two young boys. Second they made me the most incredible memory album; it had a page for every girl, a page for me, and a page for each trip we took as a team (qualifiers, multi-day tourneys, etc) Each page had words and pictures Lastly they made me a tie blankets in the club colors that was big enough for me. (6'0") Every player added a personal touch of their own in permanent marker. Every now and then I will be watching tv and will read one of girls comments and smile. |

Another spin on photos or photo albums | ||

Starbuck's occasionally has "to go" coffee tumblers that have a slot to insert your own photo page so that the outside of the tumbler shows your
photos. We made a collage of pictures of the team from the season, added the team name and year and put that in the tumbler for the coaches for a personalized
and useful remembrance of the season. I think they liked it and I know they did make use of it after the season was over.

...now retired, but during the decades I coached and interacted with both da playerz, parents, and club administrator...I never once received what I truly
needz after a season, namely a fifth of good tequila, a lime and a shot glass.

One year, the JO team I was coaching gave me a very memorable gift. It was an ornately wrapped foil box with a very attractive opaque ribbon. It looked like a
very expensive wrapping job and I was very excited to open it.
Imagine my suprise when I finally got to see the contents: A wet paper bag The players and parents had all signed a card that simply read: "We just wanted to verify if you could indeed coach your way out of this..." |

great coach gifts | ||
|
My favorite gifts have always been the items that were personalized by the girls on the team... a yearbook, team sculpture, or anything that the players made
themselves to make the gift memorable. My least favorite gifts are the checks/cash cards since the players usually had nothing to do with that... but any gift
is great. We just want to know we made an impact on your kid's experience with vball (and hopefully a positive one), so any gift that commemorates that
impact is one that will last.

The best gifts that I have received are dinner gift cards and great hotel gift certificates that I can use to take my wife out. She is a volleyball widow during the season. |
