I don't believe I am making any broad assumptions. My comment is based on fact, not assumptions. Our court was running late, so I watched the 15's team that ended up reffing us. Of course, they certainly were not of the same caliber as your daughter's 15 Open qualified team who has been playing on top teams for years (you make them sound so old). With all due respect to this team, they were a ymca team at best. And if you would have been there, you would have easily seen that the game these 18 Open teams were playing was just too fast for these "particular" girls to ref accurately. I have seen 15 open teams play and some are pretty impressive for their age, so why don't you put yourself in someone else's shoes for a minute. Why don't you imagine if it was your daughter's qualifying match and they had (with all due respect, again) a lower level 12's team reffing it. I bet you would be scratching your head in frustration too.

As a paid official, I have observed that there are three situations in a tournament when spectators are likely to yell "POINT!". The first is in pool play when their team is on the verge of either going home or getting knocked down to a lower division, so every point seems to be exceptionally important, so any delay in flipping the score, or any mistake by the flipper has a greatly exaggerated affect. The second is when the score table is not particular good at scorekeeping, or the kids simply are not paying attention (Although I dislike leaving the stand during a match, if I perceive that the girls at the score table think that they have better things to do than keep score accurately, I will come down, walk over to the table and address the players. This will usually get them to pay attention to their duties. Fortunately, the R1 cannot be penalized for delaying the match). And the third, sometimes related to the second, is when a team has just lost a match in bracket play and would be going home, except that they have to stay and ref the next match. Some teams, and it is a small minority, will mentally check out after losing and then the flipper, who is not the official scorer, will be chatting it up with someone instead of paying attention to the match or the official scoresheet. Most players come to play rather than to ref, but regardless of the circumstances, everyone on the ref team needs to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That is, work to excel at reffing the way that you work to excel at playing. Then the spectators are not likely to have any reason to yell.

Hmmmm...I believe your original comment was more along the lines that it is ridiculous for 15's to be reffing 18's and that the game is too fast for them. Obviously you had a team reffing you that should not have been, and we ALL have been in those shoes and sympathise, but that had to do with the caliber, conscience and experience of the team, NOT just with the fact that they were 15 years old. To me the only thing that is ridiculous is to make a broad sweeping statement that 15's are incapable of reffing an 18's game that is too fast for them. Those were your words not mine. As far as your comment about a 12's team reffing us, I believe I specifically said they were probably too young to ref older girls, but I have seen many 13's that I believe are more than capable of reffing our 15's. How does saying a team has been playing for years make them sound old? My youngest started soccer at 4 and has been playing 11 years now. That doesn't make her old, (or talented) it makes her experienced.

I do know they are at another club now. Interesting, we played against one of these players recently in bracket play. The parents of the reffing team cheered us on the whole time and gave the reason that this team had the most obnoxious parents they had ever seen--that they yelled at the refs and the reffing teams all day, and that the rest of the pool couldn't wait to see them beaten. It had nothing to do with the girls, just the parents which is sad. I personally don't care if people yell "point," but these parents are the perfect example of why we should all try to make sure we check ourselves and question exactly what lessons our behavior is teaching our daughters. There is no way anyone around that Atlanta court two years ago will ever forget that game, not the legacy I want to leave!

That quote about two mothers duking it out at Big South is by far the most amusing thing I've ever read on this forum. Swear to God I would personally ban my parents from my sporting events if they did that. I'd even ban dad for not breaking up melee. If that isn't a cry for help I don't know what is. BTW, there's a HUGE difference in abilities (both reffing and playing) between 15 and 12 than between 18 and 15. Not even a fair comparison.

Just click "quote" under the name, edit out what you don't want, and then type under the box that contains the other posters text. (I would have banned my parents as well, although my mom was a force to be reckoned with at little league games, all 4'11" of her...lol)

I guess I should have realized that there would be some daddy out there who would take it personally. I believe in my second post I was more specific, without coming out and naming the team. Is that what you want? No one is saying anything bad about your little suzy, so lighten up. Since you think your daughter's 15 OPEN team is so accomplished, why don't you just move'em on up to 18 OPEN. Since they have been playing sooooo long, it shouldn't be a problem. I still believe though, that 15's should not be reffing an 18 Open Qualifying match. You can analyze that all you want, it shouldn't have happened.

Funny that you are telling me not to"take it so personal" yet you are the only one that seems to be getting upset, basically over the fact that I don't agree with your stand on something. Where on earth would you get the idea that I want to know the name of the team you were talking about? Who cares? And the comment that we should "move'em up to 18's because they would be capable of reffing? Wow! Where did that come from? Reffing/Playing huh...nope, not the same thing. Most of all, it tickles me that you even make assumptions about my gender and are, yet again, misguided. If it is a testosterone competition you are looking for you are looking in the wrong place. Many venues make it impossible to get the coach's attention without yelling "point" or "score." 2. Other than lack of attention by the ref squad (most cases), I would add many mistakes are made on "play overs." I am always surprised the R1 does not make sure the score table has this correct, especially after a long discusion leading to the play over call. 3. When the R1 hears this going on, if they just check with the score table and confirm that the book matches the score board the yelling almost always subsides (along the lines of a disputed line call) 4. When the R1 knows what they are doing, this type of stuff almost never happens (I was at SoCal in 2007 and watched a match where the R1 corrected the score table twice, then had a couple of girls replaced). Good R1s can tell when they need to pay attention to the table.
