Clearly Southern California counties are among the wealthiest in the WORLD ... and Johnson County, Kansas and other counties nearby are quite different than most of the state.

satisifed and 2. average per capita is an inaccurate tool in this instance.

So ... if economics and multiple open qualifier participation are not at least partial factors ... to what do you attribute this year's number of Open qualifying SOCAL teams? ... and how does this year's number compare to previous years? |

A comparison .... School Districts (usually relatively high-income suburban) tend to boast about their high standardized test scores and
overall academic achievements of their students.
When you consider that most of these kids are raised by at least one (usually 2) college educated parents and that these schools often attract very good teachers because they can pay them well ... the kids should be doing well. I'm tempted to be more impressed with rising test scores and academic progess in more under-resourced environments ... I think you might find the most talented educators where there's success in environments with less built in advantages and opportunities. VB529, It's not exactly like you think...a closer look at some of the payscales in school district's of the wealthiest areas-vs- the poorest would show you actually just the opposite of what you propose. The highest paid teachers are in lower incomeareas. In education, the money goes to the economically disadvantaged in CA. Basic educational funding comes from property taxes, and where home values are higher, the students are achieving, and the parents educated with good jobs,that's the only money the schools get. Out here, we're writing checks to "foundations" just to keep our athletic, science, and music programs up and running next year...not to mention classes under 45! I'm not crying the blues, but if you're going to make a comparison...let's compare apples to apples

Sorry ... my "education" comparison was intended to be a general analogy .. not specific to the state of california ... I know there are some very
challenging circumstances there.
vbreporter has indicated that the number of open bids received by the SoCal teams proves that the "Big Dogs" in the world of USAV girls vb reside in the SoCal region ... the numbers were then "normalized" by showing the bids in relation to the total number of participants ..an impressive ratio. SoCal has GREAT volleyball ... I simply found myself wondering about all of the potential factors involved. I still believe economics and opportunity play a role (not just in SoCal) ... and I'm certain that the success of jrs vb there has been due to the long-time efforts of some folks passionate about volleyball who found and continue to find a way to leverage talent (players & coaches), economics, and opportunity. And ... all involved with jrs vb should consider how SoCal vb has probably influenced the vb success stories in other regions. ... don't think anyone is surprised JOs will be loaded with SOCAL teams ... the "Big Dogs" proclamation had me wanting some acknowledgement that vb in SoCal can be attributed to factors that simply aren't available to all players. for vbreporter: Imagine the Arkansas teams did indeed blitz the SoCal teams in jr turkey hunting and then bragged about how much better their turkey hunting teams were than the New York City teams and the Puerto Rico teams .... : ) |

It's not exactly what you asked for, but I can tell you that, for 14U Open, the teams who qualified attended an average of 2.037 NQs, while the non-qualifiers attended an average of 1.287. Attending more qualifiers has a definite positive impact on qualification, as does choosing the 'right' qualifiers to attend.Two questions: 1) Where did you get your figures? 2) Did the chicken or the egg come first? Perhaps it is no coincidnece that the better teams attend more qualifiers to ensure their opportuntiy for a bid? Perhaps the ratio of those who qualified attending more qualifiers is more symptomatic of the fact that the teams that deserve to qualify tend to attend more qualifiers? Perhaps teams who attend more qualifiers become stronger from playing stronger competition at the qualifiers thus increasing their opportunity to qualify? 3) How do you know in November and December when you register, which are the "right" qualifiers to attend?
Fun? You mean Volleyball is supposed to be fun??
