She was setting for her junior high and had it on. The ref stopped the match in the middle of the 1st game, gave the other team the point and the ball and told her to remove it because "it was distracting and the other team was having a hard enough time without being distracted by her sparkles." Just thought I'd share that because it cracked us up at the time. I interpret "unless it may cause injury" as including anything hard plastic or metal. Like I said, there are so many more options, why take the chance of injuring yourself or others? Maybe we should all start yelling "headbands" instead of point :-)

I think it came out in 1971. "You don't have to have a point to have a point...." "Me and my Arrow... doo doo doo do doo doo doo do doo... straighter than narrow.... wherever we go, everyone knows it's me and my arrow...." Then Oblio and Arrow got banished to the pointless forest.... I remember watching this movie on TV when I was, well, about the age of the girls I now coach... Let's just give up and stop warning them not to do it? (I'll be waiting for all the 'false analogy' comments!) It is far easier to -do- something different than it is to -not- do something. Fans should be encouraged to take the issue to the coach instead of venting to the girls at the table. When I first got involved in the sport, I was flabbergasted that the score was was wrong so often, and was screaming when it happened. Now I just wait for it to be fixed, knowing that if it isn't, our asst coach will speak up.. and then get carded for not maintaining the silence required of someone in so lowly a position

Next tourney (for many next season) count the number of times the score is incorrect (or told is incorrect) when you are playing and then count the number of times the score is incorrect when you are the work team by other parents. If the ratio is roughly the same in terms of number of sets playing vs working then holdYOUR kids accountable as well and expect your DD to get "yelled" at just as much as you yell. That said the scoresheet is a mess to figure out if an error occurred as there is no point for point system in place, go back to a HS scoresheet or College scoresheet would be much better especially for younger kids. And there is no where in the rules that require a player (parents could do it) to work the table, just someone who has gone through training.

This seems to be unique to volleyball, so I think we need to keep focus on what constitutes proper behavior by parents at a girls volleyball match.

My point is that it would be absurd to think that fans wouldn't yell about the wrong score in ANY sport. Absolutely absurd. Volleyball is no different. To prove my point, I am going to predict that for the rest of your and my lifetime, fans will continue to yell "SCORE" or "POINT" whenever they see a score that is put up incorrectly, in any sport, including volleyball. I've been to more than one high school sporting event where this happened - the last one was a lacrosse game. But since you want to limit the discussion to volleyball, what do you think would happen if the wrong score were put up in a D1 college match? Think any fans would start yelling that the score was wrong? As Oblio discovered, you don't have to have a point to have a point. Or even to yell "POINT."

In fact, I had it up to 110mph just the other day. Actually, this is probably a great point (there's that word again) you're making on my behalf. Does anyone remember the video project done by those college students in Atlanta entitled "An Act of Civil Obedience?" They did a documentary on what happens when everyone on a certain freeway was forced to stop speeding. See, it's a waste of time to try to tell people not to speed on the freeway. That's exactly the point. And when you start driving 55mph, let me know.

If the ref's warned folks to keep quiet more often, it would reduce the yelling, which would be a positive for the girls. There is just no reason to scream about it. Will it ever stop? No. Should we try to minimize it? Yes.

It is clearly intended to say that "we" as a community, should discourage the behavior. As in, it is -my- opinion that -we- should. That said, I do believe you are on the minority side of this particular debate, EI.

Get off your can and volunteer to flip. Become an approved chaperone for the team and sit on the bench and be the team's scorekeeper. Before anyone says a parent isn't allowed to be at the scorer's table I would certainly allow it if I'd had score problems earlier that day or with that work team. You think kids will sleep/text/iPod with an adult at the table? What? You'd embarrass your kid way too much sitting at the scorer's table. Something tells me this won't be the last time you'll embarrass your kid (at least in their minds). Of course people are going to yell when the score's wrong, how about trying to help make it right. And LOTS (lifeonthesidelines) has it right. In soooo many more occasions I'd take an average 15 year-old work team over an 18's crew. OK, maybe not for a match that determines a bid but that's the responsibility of the R1 to let the TD know of this situation. If they don't fix the situation then it's on them. I mean, half the parents would be banned and then we would have a third association for the loud group. In reality, I have made a conscious decision to not yell about anything at any sport, not because I personally have a moral problem with yelling ( I mean heck, I'm a teacher, get real :-) ) but because it occurred to me that I was eventually going to die of a stroke or heart attack on some sideline somewhere and traumatize whole teams of budding athletes! If you all want to feel better about volleyball, I'll be happy to post some clips of my daughters' soccer games, especially State or Regional games when they were like 11 or 12! It's horrifying to listen to later. PS...did any of you happen to be in the Atlanta convention center 2 years ago for Big South when the two moms (yes, one of them was from our club) who actually got in a fist fight on the court over one parent yelling continually at a line judge (the other one's daughter, of course). They were pulled apart and kicked out of the convention center, then actually got in trouble for trying to return (like everyone didn't know who she was at that point). The girls were in a state of disbelief, the fathers refused to go with the mothers when they were kicked out, and I for one did not want to wear our club polo shirt that weekend!
