Here is a real life example of how this can get out of hand. At a tournament awhile back, between the top two teams in the region, with an older team
reffing, one of the girls at the table was texting. When the ref signaled a replay, the girl took the last point off *both* scores, instead of only the team
that had received the point before the replay. It wasn't immediately corrected. Parents screamed. Eventually, there was a -long- delay where the
up-ref looked through the score sheets, finally determining (incorrectly) that no adjustment to the score was needed. It ended up not influencing the outcome;
the game wasn't close. But that isn't the end of the story. During that long break, our coach brought up the fact that there was texting going on,
causing problems in the score. Because of the confusion and long break, the tournament director had come over and he asked them about texting. The girls
denied it, but they stopped texting. No further issues with the score.
Fast forward several weeks.
We play the team (two years older, by the way) that been reffing. We beat them. After the match, our coach is accosted (and I use the term advisedly!) by moms
from the other team, who began yelling at our coach for falsely accusing the girl of texting. They physically blocked her from leaving, and even
'bumped' her, like two NBA players might do. Our middle blocker intercedes, getting between the angry mom mob and our coach. Both sides get the region
involved. Fortunately for truth, justice, and the American way, I had videotaped the match where the girls were texting, and they were "caught on
tape". As was the original error of taking both points away.
We were schedule to play the team again a couple of weeks ago, but they were thankfully away at an NQ, so no follow up incidents.
Lessons learned?
A. Texas isn't the only place where you need to watch out for moms of cheerleaders and volleyball players.
B. Sometimes the score gets messed up. Yelling isn't always going to help the situation, and it may just cause more problems.
C. Texting while reffing (or driving!) is a mortal sin.
