The terms of the agreement were passed by the AVCA Board of Directors at their annual spring meeting earlier this week in Lexington, Ky. "What you look for in a partner is compatibility of mission and vision and we have found that in the JVDA," said Kathy DeBoer, AVCA Executive Director. "Both of us are committed to the development of the sport of volleyball, both share the goal of educating and improving the effectiveness of volleyball coaches, and both of us understand the mission-critical nature of youth development and increased participation opportunities. This partnership allows each organization to share their strengths with the other and keeps the various volleyball communities interconnected." The two organizations have been working together under a Memorandum of Understanding since January 2007. Based on the success of the partnership since the initial agreement was signed, the two organizations decided to ink a three-year deal to continue the relationship, and further their joint efforts and goals of the development of Junior Volleyball. "The JVDA is very pleased to be able to continue its relationship with the AVCA," said Rich Zeciski, JVDA President and Director of Team Z Volleyball Club in Cincinnati. "The AVCA's assistance in managing important areas of the JVDA membership has been invaluable to our organization's initial growth. We look forward to the next three year partnership and the many opportunities that can be developed by our association with the AVCA." As its managing partner, the AVCA will continue to provide the JVDA with administrative services, and will be instrumental in helping to promote JVDA membership, the JVDA Championships, the "VolleyTots" youth program, and other JVDA initiatives. The 2008 JVDA Championships are scheduled for June 27-30 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. Over 450 teams are scheduled to participate in this inaugural event, representing volleyball clubs from four different countries. What effect does this have for JVDA? Does USAV have something like this in place?

USAV needs neither the credibility nor the administrative help.

I have generally been supportive of many of the basic principles put forth by JVDA (e.g., pushing for a more regional qualifying system, shortening the season, making junior v.b more affordable, putting money back into developmental programs). And given the size of junior volleyball as a business in the United States, it makes sense to me that there is an organization that represents the interests of Club Directors (just as there are trade associations that represent many types of businesses). But one of the concerns/problems I have had with what the JVDA has done this year is that they have gone well beyond a trade organization representing their members, to an actual governing body for administering junior volleyball events. To use an analogy, this seems equivalent to the major league baseball players association deciding to form and run their own baseball league as opposed to merely representing the interests of baseball players. I'm sure the response to this is that the JVDA felt it necessary to best represent the interests of its members by running their own tournaments. But am I the only one who sees a potential conflict/problem with an organization whose primary objective is to represent one of the parties involved in junior volleyball (i.e., volleyball club owners) becoming the governing body of the sport itself? It would seem to me that whoever is the governing body, in a perfect world, would balance the interests of all the parties, which includes Club Directors, but also includes the athletes, parents, referees, venue owners, etc. Again, I'm not arguing against what the JVDA stands for or even their decision to have its members opt out of the USAV system. But long term, it doesn't make sense to me that the governing body for junior volleyball should be a trade association representing club owners. Finally, did the JVDA ever approach any existing national youth organizations (AAU for example) to have them assume the same role the JVDA is playing in organizing their non-USAV tournaments and championships instead of doing it themselves? If the JVDA plans on continuing to opt-out of the USAV system, are there any plans to turn over the administration of these non-USAV volleyball tournaments to another organization that isn't so directly tied to club owners? I'm well aware that in many USAV regions clubs run the tournaments, including qualifiers (although in the region my daughter plays, SoCal, that is not the case since the USAV region (SCVA) runs everything). My question is really about the "governing body" for JVDA tournaments (which in my view is different than the actual logistical administration of tournaments). Specificaly, I am wondering (particularly if the JVDA/USAV split is long-term) if the JVDA is considering either having an existing youth sports organization (like AAU) or a new organization not directly controlled by Club Directors serve in the governing body role for their competitions.
