17 Open Field Junior Nationals and NQs...

Just a dad that likes to watch all the good teams when I can. Just for discussion sake I threw out some comments on teams my daughter has played. The only time I really watched Vision was in a match v my daughter at Vegas. Daughters team won maybe 25-19 25-15. Probably not Visions best match. Considering all the other results, 2 qualifier wins etc, I do think of them as one of the 6 teams that have separated themselves from the pack. Among that group I think AJV has played better than the rest. Of the remaining 5, I think you could argue that any of them is #2 and on a given day the team that was playing closest to it's potential would probably win.

The third is still up in the air but, I would say that MN Select is out, still listed as National qualified and IPVA is still listed as American qualified. I would guess it would be one of the others listed before. Long Beach, Impact Silver, SWI, my money would be on Long Beach, they seem to have the best numbers and yet another So Cal team. Good Luck to all in 17 Open this year which seems to be one of the deepest in years. Like the salary cap in pro sports parity is good for the league, it should be a very exciting nationals this year.

As posted a week ago: "I have SWI at T7th at Far West going 1-4 against the Open Field. They did indeed finish ahead of two qualified teams, but teams they did not play so count that as "pooling" not performance. At Big South, SWI goes 2-4 against the field including two losses to Cincinnati Classics by an average of 6-points a set and a fourth place finish in pool on Day 2. So 3-8 against the field = NO SOUP FOR YOU. " Cincinnati and Texas AVA are "locks" then it's a coin toss...Long Beach, MN Select being heads and tails respectively... 17Open deepest in years? Please. If you want to talk "most even" after the first 4-6 teams that would be an accuarate statement...but the departure of some of the JVDA teams and thier excepional athletes are not going to be replaced by teams of the same caliber.

This years 17's teams are very evenly matched and it should make for some exciting volleyball in Dallas. Now who wants to start the debate on the teams in USAV vs the teams in JVDA! Like all those websites do in other team sports, Packers, Fins or the Pats? Bulls, Lakers, Celts? Yankeeees, Canadiens, Etc.

And that is due in part to the fact that there are several of the class of 2010 and 2011 (which both are strongest classes in a while) that played 14 open and 15 open last year skipped 16open (and 15open) and went to 17open. The difference I see is that out of the key (7) players on the team most teams are very strong in 4-5 positions, so the difference will be the "breakout" of one of those players (similar to Missy Harp...last year) and the "step-up" of the other players. Many of the teams of the 25 already in fall into this camp. So, I think you will find the field very challenging beyond "the 6" mentioned in this thread so far (as long as players are healthy ). As far as the absence of several of the JVDA teams - we will see the possible affect in the up-coming tourney;s in June (as Tawa has said). No doubt if the split had not occured, several of the current field in 17Open would be in the Club division; the competition therefore "deeper" with JVDA teams in the field; and more consistent with the "deeper" JOs of previous years. The correct assessment being the "most shallow" in years. Again, if you want to talk "parity" among the field, fine, but your statement was "deepest" and that's simply an inaccurate comment. He said, she said, now you are talking about your definition of deep. No doubt if the JVDA teams were in the USAV it would still be deep with the top 10 to 12 teams fighing it out, maybe more. Never said that all 28 were great, and yes the JVDA teams would drop some of this years "open" teams back to club. Deep is 8 to 12 instead of 4 to 8. When you add some parity by subtracting some other great teams it makes for more evenly matched teams and better volleyball to watch, and the field of 28 is still 28 but the number of teams that can win it gets bigger, deeper or further back into the 28 if you will. Many of this years 17's teams are very good regardless of what end of the year tournament they are playing in making this years 17's teams the deepest in years.

JVDA teams don't withdraw. The 28-team field then has (for example purposes) 12 teams that have a realistic shot at winning making it a very deep field in that you have to go 12 teams "deep" to yield an eventual champion...OK you with me so far? Of those 12 teams, JVDA decides to pull 6 teams out at the last minute. USAV then backfills those spots with 6 Club level teams. Question: How many of the 12 original teams in the "deep" field remain? Hopefully your answer is 6. So if the intial "depth" was 12 teams but now it's 6 teams....which field is deeper? The flaw in your statement is either your failure to recognize that six team from the intial 12-team field still remain OR your projection that the Club teams used to backfill are of the same caliber as the teams that left meaining the 12-team field remains in tact...neither correct. To potential irate replies, note the numbers 12 and 6 teams were used as examples for benefit of this reply. I'm sure the responses will include the "any of the 28-field can win on any given day" but in actuality is not truly realsitic. Again, the numbers 12 and 6 were example numbers only.
