This is definitely helpful to someone still learning about J.O. volleyball and how everything works. I must admit that I will probably use all the work you did to present myself as a much more knowledgeable volleyball person to other parents on my daughters team! As a small token of my appreciation I would like to buy you cool refreshing beveraging in Dallas, or Wisconsin Dells if you will be there, with your step-daughters team. I am the Parent Rep for the Toledo Volleyball Club 14-1 team or just ask someone for the volleyball obsessed dad and they will point you to me. Thanks again for all the great work!

While I really, really miss the qualifiers, I do hope that the USAV listens to some of the arguments coming out of the JVDA because it would be nice to have a process for Open qualification that is more affordable.

Many teams play multiple qualifiers for the competition, even if they qualify on the first attempt....

Looking at all the data, it's clear there is an art/science to choosing where to play. Once you know who the top teams are, and know what influences -their- choices (including regional schedule conflicts), you can see which NQs give you the best chance of obtaining a bid. You can then also factor in expected drop outs and trickle downs as teams get their bids. Some clubs used that science; most(including us) didn't. Go JVDA - simplify it and regionalize it for us please! Many teams had their best finish at the first NQ they attended, although that isn't necessarily where they were awarded a bid. And of course many lower finishes were a result of stronger fields.

My daughter plays on one of the teams listed by VolleyballFan13s. My conclusion after having done this for the first time is that it would have been a much more reasonable and affordable season for a 14 year old team to attend only our local qualifier and not to have traveled to an out-of-state qualifier. While the trip was certainly fun and the girls had great competition, it added significant cost to all our families, it was disruptive for school, and generally I think it contributes to some burn-out during the season. An ideal season would have been to play locally for the regular season and reward the girls with one out-of-state, end-of-year trip. The competition in our region (as with many of the regions that typically have Open level teams) is plenty strong enough to test our girls. But, as has been said countless times, under the current system if you are serious about playing in the Open division you have to hit the road. I am NOT looking forward to doing this for four more years and my hope is similar to Torami's that the USAV works toward a more regional system. At the very least, the USAV could try out more regional approaches for the younger age divisions. I see that some of the teams on Torami's list have gone to THREE qualifiers. Too much at too young an age at too expensive a cost -- IMHO.

I am just saying that if you want an open bid, you better go to a minimum of two and probably three qualifiers to increase your odds. And that is with the current qualifying process. Remember that the USAV announced that they were only going to award two open bids per qualifier and have more qualifiers. Instead of needing to go to two or three qualifiers to get the open bid, teams would be forced to go to three or four. When the USAV announced this change to the qualifying process, that was when the whole JVDA thing really exploded and the JVDA walked away. A couple months after the JVDA walked away, USAV said they wouldn't go to the new qualification process for sure - that it was only an idea. The one (and honestly the only thing) that I have liked about the JVDA route is that my daughter has only had to miss 1/2 day for volleyball. When academics are as competitive as volleyball, I count that as a blessing. If we really had to attend three - four qualifiers, my daughter would miss 6 full days (four Fridays and a 1/2 of four Thursdays) for volleyball. Combined with the fact that these days missed are very concentrated in March/April is very hard for a student. I do wish the USAV would adopt some of the JVDA ideas. But honestly, playing in the JVDA has been incredibly boring (hope my club director doesn't read this). I love the excitement of qualifiers. But it would be great if the USAV would find a more economical and less time consuming way than the current process and especially the proposed USAV process (that would be brutal). Torami - did your team get the regional bid?

Then tried to bump up in SoCal but they wouldn't do it because the seedings had been done. And I agree that the NQs, especially in Open, are fun and intense, and there is absolutely nothing like the experience our girls have each year at Crossroads. That tournament especially is great, because you are on the "16th Street Mall", with all its shops and restaurants; a great downtown area. It's both a qualifier and a 'treat' tournament. SoCal was not so much, because (a) it isn't all one location, (b) the main gym was HOT! and away fro the hotels, (d) problematic parking. Good teams, though. If we only played locally, it would be a real drag. There is only one 14 team that can even come close. Playing 16's and 18's just isn't the same. Might be more fun for everyone if the team was split up and everyone played at the club level! As a family, we are truly questioning the whole club thing because it sucks up so much in time and resources, and because even accepting that, you face the political stuff and having to 'play the game' in its current design... chasing bids, supporting half the world financially, etc. And the pressure/spotlight on the girls at this age isn't completely positive. Who all will be in Dallas? It's not a certain thing for me, beacause my wife has made it clear she is not going. I'm deciding whether to go or not. :-/
