Congratulations to all these teams
|
There are over 2000 teams playing in the US and these girls are all having a fantastic season to be considered amongst the top teams. Every team has a story
about a bounce here or a call there that could have them qualified already. 4 of them will get the honor of going open (and likely a very LONG JO experience)
and the rest will be competing head to head for the National medals.
Whatever happens, Congratulations to ALL these teams. See you in Dallas. |

At Large Bid Ranking | ||
|
Looking at this list (of which my current team is a part) makes me think of a few things specifically: one, the ramifications of dropping a match you DON'T
have to win to advance (basically because you played kids who otherwise would have little chance of playing late in an Open Qualifier). This happened to us
twice, most pointedly in one Qualifier where we had only to win game one of our last match (which we did 25-19) to win the pool. CW says you let kids play
after that. We ended up losing the match in a tight, three games, and I see that team listed ahead of us, as is another team we had beaten in two earlier in
the year. Now, we did not apply for the At-Large bid anyway so it's all moot, but the situation does make me think. I mean, as a coach, I feel strongly
that when an opportunity (other than the typical blow-out of an inferior team) arises, I have to give kids a chance on the court. We did it at the MEQ as well
and were able to squeak out the win anyway (before a team-wide flu bug blasted us out of contention by the second day---THAT was a bummer.) Still, these
decisions can come back to haunt one later when total records and wins/losses against the field of contenders are taken into account. As far as the list goes,
based on year-long play, Synergy, Niagara, Team Atlantis, and Cincy Classics are interchangeable. I also don't see the first three losing to any 2's
team on that list. Other notes: Big South was comparatively weaker than many other qualifiers (at least through the top 15)...and look arefully how TAV roared
through the competition at Lone Star.

Does the selection committee consider strength of qual?
|
Most of these posts have been talking as if the strength of the qualifier was important. But does the committee use that or do they just consider all
qualifiers equal?

Open ranking | ||

I do not profess to know the actual criteria here (although I thought I saw a post that listed it earlier). At any rate, for the seeding of Nationals and
Qualifiers, I'm pretty sure actual finish is of no consequence. It's all about wins and losses, quality wins, etc. Finish, let's say between 4th
and 9th, is often about which side of a bracket you were on, or which Gold pool of 4 you fell into. You could finish 5th at a qualifier and have only 1 maybe 2
wins of any consequence or finish 9th and had to battle through a handful of top-rated teams. OR...you can have a finish at a weaker qualifier of 8th, while a
7th place finish at another qualifier was way more difficult. However, I don't know if, in the case of At-Large Bids, actual finish matters at all.
(Anybody?) If it doesn't, that unofficial ranking we have here becomes more questionable/difficult because no one can know who beat whom outside of the
qualifiers, unless you have gobs of time on your hands to go digging. No thanks.

first 3 on the list! | ||
|
"the first 3 on the list" clearly do not play in SO Cal, where they would play very good 2 teams. NOTE: 7 Qualified OPEN teams are from SO Cal. Tis
is the main reason others will get in. Who do you think is a tougher region? While some good teams will compete for metals, clearly So Cal win win the most top
spots. Most regions should be happty unqualified teams were beaten by other So Cal teams. The LB team had 3 Matches all from SO Cal Qualified teams to get the
Bid and lost those matches, nothing to be shamed of. Remember the three teams you are talking about after they meet up with SO Cal in Dallas. We can chat then!

Wonder how many teams are missing?
|
I wonder if there will be any surprises... I know of a team with 3 wins over qualified teams that isn't on any of the lists in this thread. There could
be others. I don't think qualifier finish has anything to do with it, because last year it seemed to be straight up number of wins vs. qualified teams,
and if they needed a tie-breaker or ran out of teams with wins over qualified teams then they seemed to then consider record vs. the at-large applicant field.
Now I don't know if it is "winning percentage" or "number of wins", which might change things. Qualifier finish is usually related to
number of wins over qualified opponents, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the selections (in the last couple of years).

Qualifier finish | ||

All of the coaches I have talked to focus almost exclusively on qualifier finish. Secondary is win/loss percentage and who the wins and losses were against.
You simply won't have a team finish 15th and 17th in two qualifiers yet have some key wins along the way that enables them to get an at large bid.

I know that volleyball is competitive in So Cal and there are some awesome players but that statement is a little bold considering the So Cal teams haven't even played two thirds of the field yet. Also, it makes sense that of the three teams that beat LB all were from SC since of the 28 teams in that qualifier only 4 were not from So Cal. Good luck to all the teams in Dallas! |

Long Beach 15R | ||

It is obvious that "Volleyball" is a big Long Beach 15R booster and there is nothing wrong with that. It is just clouding judgment a bit. The
numbers don't add up to have this team be given an at large pick.

I love some good natured support of your home town teams in advance of the Big Dig in Dallas. (The key here is good natured on all sides.) In fact, while I
am not naturally a supporter of Lower California, in this case I am willing to agree that I figure the top finishing team in 15 Open will be from California in
general.
Now, typically, before the Super Bowl and such events our governors get into the action with a little exchange of home grown products. I don't know that Schwarzenegger knows about the JOs, so perhaps we will have to step in for him. I am willing to bring a bottle of California White with me to Dallas as a gift on the off chance that California does not finish first. Is there someone out there who would like to offer their support for a different region? Texas Chili? Kansas City Ribs? |
