Great subject, have been thinking...
|
about this exact subject myself after last weekend.
Worked the JVDA Elite Scrimmage last weekend (I'm a ref). Granted, I don't see 17/18 Open competition every weekend and certainly not the cream-of-the-crop like this past weekend. Regardless, I was really taken aback by the horrible attitudes these Elite (or should I say Elite-ist) players possessed (by and large). I was actually approached by a member of the work team for the final match who said "you're going to try and make this quick, aren't you?". Uh...yeah princess...whatever you say. Most work teams that weekend I would rate from "barely average" to "horrid." Mercifully, there was one major exception: Illini Elite. These young ladies made excellent work teams (a young Illini DS was simply one of the best Junior R2's I've ever worked with). They displayed class and respect for the game by doing there jobs as intended. Just an overall pleasure to be around their team. Honorable mention to Pittsburgh Renaissance as well, they were one of the other "above average" work teams. They had to work after losing during bracket play on Sunday and did so without that "we're being tortured" look on their face. Another club that deserves mention is USA Michigan. Their girls are simply taught to respect the game and to support each other. Had them last season at a site with incredibly close courts, balls were rolling on constantly. USA Michigan (my work team), actually provided ball shaggers to prevent balls from rolling on the courts. I think they did it without being prompted by their coach (15-year olds doing things they don't have to do -- Are you listening to me?) They didn't play at the Elite Scrimmage but deserve mentioning in this thread. Lastly, I'm sure there are examples of class demonstrated in gyms all across the country and I don't mean to leave any deserving clubs out. These are just the ones that have stood out in my little corner of the Mid-West. |

Iowavb is right on. Platform Elite 15s is at the top of my list. From the head coach Mary Kaye, to her two daughters on the team as well as the rest of the girls, they are the classiest I've ever seen. Not sure how the love started last year but they always cheered my team on regardless who we were playing and they always took the time to stop by and chat in between matches. The girls are so warm and genuine and it's going to be sad to see those girls leave for college. A close second would be head coach Bob F. and his daughter Brooke of Iowa Rockets 15R. Strong team and they always compete hard but after the match, she's always the first one over to graciously spend time with us. We've been very lucky in the Iowa Region to have a bunch of classy coaches, parents and especially players. It's a small state and a small volleyball world in general and spending time with these folks are always fond memories in the making. |

Nike NW Jr's 18 air elite!
|
I'd say the current Nike NW JR's 18 Air Elite girls and parents. Over the last 4-5 years (at least since 15's) this team has enjoyed great success, their parents are the calmest most polite parents and the kids are good to each other and are great sports - respectful of opponents - never any taunting or rude behavior. |

Reading the story about Impact making friends at the Vegas showcase reminded me of the Impact 16 1's team last year. We played in the same pool during an SCVA mandatory and they cheered our girls on to victory and that was the beginning of a mutual respect that lasted throughout our season. Our team had a similar relationship with the Santa Barbara 16 1's team. I miss them as this year my dd is playing her age and they have all moved up. Especially loved the Crenshaw twins/family from Impact! |

Best tourney | ||

By far and away the Emerald City Classic at the University of Washington over Memorial Day weekend put on by Washington Volleyball Academy is the best time for
teams and families. This event features a bbq with 70's tunes playing and Lake Washington and the UW athletic facilities. this event is put on with
volunteers from WVBA. You here lots of comments from fans about what a great time they have at this tourney every year. You can check out pics from this
tourney at wvba.org and see lots of smiling faces. A great time with lots of good sportsmanship from all the teams and fans!

One has to admit it beats the "hot coach" threads that once populated this forum.
