Lonestar Region High Performance Program???? |
Lead | |
|
Does ANYONE know ANYTHING about tryouts for this program this year? I e-mailed the person in charge a couple of weeks ago and got an e-mail back saying they
would post tryouts "this weekend, as soon as Lonestar is settled." Well, Lonestar is now not only settled, it is over, yet there is still no
information up. Surely one of the biggest regions in the country is not going to blow off High Performance this year?

surely the "leadership" of the Lone Star Region would not let that happen...

Lone Star Regional HP "Leadership"
I e-mailed the person in charge ...I am not sure who you mailed, but if it was the folks who purport to run the Region, then you are likely barking up the wrong tree. My kiddo has participated in LSHP each of the last two years, and in *BOTH* of those years the Regional leadership did nothing.... in those years, the LSHP program was put together by Austin Juniors on behalf of the region. I don't want to slight Texas Tornados here because I think they also hosted and ran some of the tryouts, but I am dead certain that AJV actually organized the whole topic. It is a sad state of affairs that one of the largest regions, with presumably one of the largest budgets, cannot find a way to actually organize a regional HP team. I can categorically tell you that if AJV had not organized it the last two years, it would not have happened. I can further tell you that virtually every other region provided gear (uniforms, etc.) for the HP teams... and I know that two years ago, AJV paid that bill out of their own pocket. Anyway, late night rant.. bottom line.. don't waste emails on the Regional leadership...and you should hope that AJV has the time and staff to make it happen once again. |

HP in NT | ||
|
The North Texas region has not posted anything on HP this year either.
It may be a $$ thing? There was a meeting note in the NT Oct board meeting that there was still a 5K deficit. I didn't see HP mentioned in the March 3 NT Board meeting notes - not a good sign??? http://www.ntrvolleyball.org/100107minutes.pdf Or perhaps they are still trying to find coaches for the teams and camp. I know the coaches, the cost, and tournament dates are the first things I review. I also sent an inquiring email to the NT region a couple of months ago and I did not receive a reply - so getting a reply is at least a movement in the right direction! Point for LS region!

According to the USAV site, there should have been HP Tryouts on the Thursday nights preceding Lone Star in Dallas and Houston. I remember seeing girls with
tryout numbers on in Houston on the 10th. If that wasn't HP tryouts, then what were they doing?
Fun? You mean Volleyball is supposed to be fun??

No North Texas HP | ||
|
At the February 21st North Texas Region Board of Directors meeting, the decision was made to not have a regional High Performance team or camp this year. The
minutes are on the region's website.

Thanks for the clarification. Re: NTR deciding not have regional teams this year...perhaps the LSR made the same decision and noone knows?

I believe in the past the tryouts for LSHP have been the weekend of the Region Tournament and are handled similarly to the USAV HP tryouts at National
Qualifiers - with the tryouts the night before the tournament start. If I remember correctly, last year notice wasn't posted until a week or two before
the tournament.

I also know that AJV has put this team together but here are two concerns. 1st--while it is not their responsibility to do so (although an argument may be made that they are giving back what they are gaining from the region as they pretty much rule the region financially, which is fine, free enterprise and all that, but it is nice to see some of it returned) anyhow, because they have done it for the past couple of years, if they are not going to be able to this year, some notice of that would be nice, either so someone else can try to pick up the slack, or so that plans may be made accordingly. Which brings me to my second concern. If, as in the past, tryouts will be held the night before Regionals, which is also in keeping with the tentative
information gleaned from the e-mail I received, then the information really needs to be released earlier than a week before tryouts. The 15's and 16's
are playing Regionals in Austin, right? This means that tryouts will be in Austin for that age group. Because a number of very competitive teams from the
Houston area in these age groups are already qualified, they will not be at Regionals. This means a decision needs to be made by families concerning whether
or not they are going to drive to Austin for tryouts (yeah, more travel) which is also fine, however, it is unrealistic, and in my opinion unfair, to expect us
to not even know that we need to make these arrangements until the last minute. Quite a few girls who have participated in LSHP in the past couple of years
play for these teams (Tornados and AVA 15's just off the top of my head) that have already qualified. There was some discussion last year about the San
Antonio players not being aware of tryouts and feeling excluded last year. I don't how late the info was posted then but if it is not put up until a week
before, they are, for all practical purposes, excluding some of these Houston girls, or the BRVC girls for that matter.
OK, so there's my rant for the night...hopefully we will find hotels once the information is available. Incidentally, I wholeheartedly agree that it is ashamed that the LS region is not "capable" of running the program because ultimately it is their responsibility and neglecting it is neglecting the very girls they are making their money off of. |

Assume consistency...
The 15's and 16's are playing Regionals in Austin, right? This means that tryouts will be in Austin for that age group.Last year, Regionals were split across Houston and Austin by age group. If memory serves, I think HP tryouts were held at both locations, independent of age group (in other words, all LSHP age groups tried out at both locations, regardless of where there age group regional was). You have a good point that regionals are now all local to Austin... and, a reasonable assumption that all tryouts will be the night before regionals in Austin as well. However, (and I have *no* inside knowledge here), it would not surprise me to see a tryout at, say, Tornados facility as well for those Houston area folks that are not attending Regionals. Just a guess and don't hold me to it if I am wrong. I *think* the argument for San Antonio is that, even if not attending Regionals, it is clearly a drive up, do the gig, drive home deal (no hotel) and, hence, a weeks notice is likely sufficient. |

By the way not all regionals are in Austin this year, 3 age groups are in Houston

Perfect. Then I would put an even higher probability on dual tryouts.

From the AJV site...
2008 USA Volleyball Regional High Performance Championship (page updated 4-24-2008) DUE TO MANY FACTORS (coaches, facilities, funds, time) IT WAS DECIDED AS OF APRIL 23, 2008 THAT WE WOULD NOT BE HOSTING A REGIONAL HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAM(S) THIS SEASON. I APPRECIATE THE INTEREST OF THE FEW WHO HAD CONTACTED ME AND WE TRULY REGRET ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MIGHT HAVE CAUSED. WE SAW MANY OF YOU ON THE USAV TRYOUT LIST AND WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK! AUSTIN JUNIORS WILL BE PUTTING TOGETHER A HIGH PERFORMANCE/ELITE CAMP THIS SUMMER - dates to be announced. Sincerely - AJV

Thanks for the info volleydad--I don't suppose there is now time for anyone else to step and decide to coordinate it at the late date. Too bad for the
girls in our region.

Austin Juniors - time to pass the baton

I had a really nice post drafted about alternate means of fielding a team. But then I checked the USAV web site, and the entry deadline for the HP tournament
(the whole point of this) is May 1 -- seven days from now. So there is no alternative. What a pity. Lone Star High Performance 2009: Tornados? Alamo? --
you can do it! Go for it! You have our support.
