...Northern Lights 19 total teams. Three teams previously qualified. If I'm doing the math correct, that translates into all three Open bids at Northern Lights having to be awarded this weekend.

With Lone Star adding two teams last weekend the field for JR. Nationals is currently at 20 teams. Adding three for Northern Lights after this weekend gets the field to 23 with only Far West remaining to be played. Currently, the At-Large Pool is at 2...one from Lone Star and the one bid held in reserve by USAV.

Field for Northern Lights. Qualifed teams in BOLD and Underlined.

... to the volleyball community, I took a look at Far West 17Open after the last post. WOW! That is a tough, tough NQ with 27 teams and eight already qualified...again eight qualified meaning 28% of the 17Open field of Nationals will be at Far West.

Based on the above, and the previous post, my fearless prediction for At-Large bids to 17Open is 4...one from Lone Star, two from Far West and the one At-Large that USAV holds in reserve.

Still too early to start an honest and informed debate of who the At-Larges should be with two NQs remaining but anyone wishing to start the ball rolling may do so...with heavy lobbying from the teams done with their NQs expected.

Let me start by saying I am not a coach/parent/player for the club, but they have a good case. They were 7th in Open in Baltimore, and 5th in SoCal (1 win from a bid). They are also one of only 2 17's teams (the other being Encinitas Wave) to be in SCVA Division 1 17/18's, arguably one of the toughest in the country.

I don't know much about their record against the field of qualified teams, but I do know they are ranked higher than SCVC and Goldenwest, both of which got bids at LoneStar (and remain in SCVA Division 2)

BTW, there are (4) qualified teams...you forgot Skyline 17. Too bad TX Tornadoes dropped. And yes the Far Western will be something with so many battling.

...by what's posted on the Northern Lights site. Saw the Skyline and believe that's their second team by the team code comparison between USAV Qualified teams and the NL field.

I checked the Skyline website and it appears Skyline`s 2nd team will be at Northern Lights.

Using the scientifically proven method of "eenie-meenie-mynee-moe"; a quick look at the NQs played; and those yet to be played, here are my fearless predictions for At-Large bid for 17Open assuming there will be four as previously posted:

The first At-Large to Cincinnati Classic. With their NQs completed, CC sports a gaudy 5.0 average finish by placing 5^th at both Big South and Mid-East. No way to keep them out of the Open Field at Nationals…get your bags packed and congrats!

Second At-Large to AVA Texas. With a fourth at North East and a seventh at Lone Star their average NQ finish is 5.5. That coach has got to have more gray hairs than opossum after getting so close but a great season to continue in the Open at Nationals!

Third At-Large Long Beach. Their 5^th at SOCAL and 7^th at North East averages them out to a 6.0 in NQ finishes and you never have enough CA teams at Nationals, right?

Fourth? I'll take either Northern Lights or OVA. Both playing this weekend at Northern Lights and sporting fourth places finishes at their earlier NQs. If they don't win bids outright this weekend, anything above 9^th gets them in (9+4=13) with and average finish of 6.5.

Guidelines and thought process used during this "guess-timate"; (1) it was (is) a great year for volleyball in the 17s division and the competition for At-Larges with also be tough; (2) any finish outside the Top-10 at an NQ was a killer in being considered for an At-Large; (3) it'd be tough, and probably impossible, to not have at least one Top-5 finish to be considered.

OK BOARD…HAVE AT IT!

I agree with AVA of Texas. I believe they are also 9-7 against teams that have already qualified. Mizuno Long Beach also very good team. They beat AVA in 3 at NEQ in very good match. Does anyone know when at-larges will come out? After Far West qaulifier right?

I agree with the thought process---I hope (as a parent) that OVA qualifies outright at the NLQ. However, should something go awry . . . The 4th place at NEQ combined with the 3rd place out in Las Vegas should put them in contention for the at large.

I think you hit this one...this is a wonderful team. I don;t know what the W/L record is, but 2x 5th place finishes at NQ's, the worst finish of the year was 7th at the CZ at Indy and lastly, they just won a National Bid by taking 1st in the OVR Region Tourney...Solid year. I also got to go with Long Beach, solid effort this year with strong NQ finish.

The first thing the committee looks at is Win/Loss against the field. Put that up and it will tell the tale.

I feel like after looking at the qualifiers win/loss

I would agree with cincy classics and ava. I do not know what the win loss against the field is for long beach but they look viable as well.

In looking at win/loss of ova and northern lights I would say that it is likely that there are teams with better win loss records againts the field.

...post SO0OO my hope of starting and argument, or at least a lively debate, ain't going to happen unless we change the subject...

It'll be a lot easier after the NQs but we have to agree that finishing high (4-7) in an NQ is a good rough-cut in that you had to beat some pretty good teams to get there AND you probably lost to a pretty good team to not qualify...and that includes OVA and N.Lights.

...one NQ to go and only two "At-Large" bids now available. As thought, OVA and Northern Lights qualify at Northern Lights. Still predicting the remain three teams: Cincy Classics, Texas AVA and Long Beach to be the "locks" for the At-Large. After Far West, I may have to find three more as there's a great chance none will be awarded at that NQ with eight excellent and qualified teams in the field....but I'll be watching and VB"Report" back.
