Situation - Placed really high in our region and getting ready for a qualifier. Our outside AND middle have completely shut down, resorting to clowning around in practice, showing no work ethic, and showing utter disrespect to the coaching staff. This has killed our last two practices as their attitudes are contagious and bring the level headed girls down to their level.
We have pulled them off to the side when similar behavior came up and did it again after our last practice, letting them know their actions are affecting the team and they are being selfish taking away from the girls who are dedicated and play their hearts out every practice and tournament.
To top it off, they were not smart and added my assistant coach and me as friends on Facebook. Well, doing a little snooping, we saw they are constantly going back and forth about how much they dislike volleyball, they don't have fun, and how they don't want to travel to the qualifier.
Catch 22 - I would like to ask them not to come to the rest of practices and the qualifier unless their heart is 100% into it (hoping their attitudes will shift to a positive one). The girls are high caliber players… When they want to be. But, I come from the old school mentality that I would rather have 9 girls of mediocre talent with huge heart than 9 girls with huge talent and no heart. My assistant disagrees with this approach as they think it will ruin our chances of winning matches this weekend.
Also, there is a slim chance (but a chance) a bid from our Region will be passed down to us (the teams that
earned the Region bids have a really good shot of earning a National Qual. Bid).
Lastly, you have the parents perspective of investing a lot of time and money into the season. So, many variables to consider.
Just looking for some perspective from others on how to handle this situation.
Thanks in advance.
