I can't speak for the rest of the year, but the attendance at the JVDA Showcase suggests that fear of not being evaluated was misplaced. 100 colleges had registered for the event, including several with smaller recruiting budgets from outside the region who made the choice to travel to The Dells to see these JVDA kids play. JVDA member clubs always asserted that the coaches would "follow the talent." At least this weekend, that appears to be the case.

Kudos to those colleges and their programs for allowing for this expense. Being a parent of a player during a recruiting year, I was nervous how the JDVA switch would affect the recruiting process, but it appears to be only mild because colleges are indeed going where the talent is. I know of several players currently at the Showcase that are hoping to get that final look before making their collegiate decision. Another Kudo shout goes to prepvolleyball. They have also handled the development of the JDVA like champs with unbias class. Thanks, John, for being there to cover the Showcase. Our team did not have enough players and had to drop out of the competition and it is killing me not to be there, but I am sure enjoying reading about it

There were definitely more coaches there than I expected. The only thing I would hope the staff would work on before the next event is the logistics for the recruiters. I know some coaches didn't find us as they had planned. On day 2 - 17s that had finished 2nd in their pool on Fri were now out of gold and shipped off to the Dells HS. While a couple of coaches were seen there - it was only those that were interested in a certain individual on a certain team. There was no random stops by coaches because they would have to leave the WDC and drive for just 8 teams....not worth the time. I heard many comments from many parents regarding this issue, with a feeling that they were cheated out of exposure on day 2 and I understand completely on that one. I know that someone needs to go because of space, and I have no idea what it looked like at the other center but I would hope that some more thought would go into this for future events. Are you saying your team NEVER played at the WDC? And if those coaches ventured out to see the "certain player" surely didn't watch one player. I was at the high school at 8AM on Sunday and there were 6 college coaches sitting in the stands before play and at least a dozen more walked through before we took off. Coaches go where they need to go. Just my 2 cents.

If yous read, WI never saidz nothing about never playing at WDC just that on Dayz 2 dey got shipped out. Also, recruiters dontz necessarily come on de first dayz or stayz until the lights are turned off..so yes it is a timing issue sometimes. Bottom linz is WI expressed a concern, a concern that warrants consideration by JVDA...ease up.

Yes, it was nice to have many college recruiters signed up, but even nicer that you took the time during a heavy Qualifier season to give a first-hand report of the event. Hope you feel 100% soon!

John-- I'd like to address your post point by point and add a few other observations. 1. Yes, parents were ( and still are ) concerned that their kids would not be seen because their teams were going the JVDA route. 2. Attendance at the Showcase did in no way alleviate our fear that our kids are not being evaluated. We are a JVDA club -- this is the first and ONLY tournament we have been in this season with a lot of college coaches attending. 3. Because of the dearth of college coaches at the tournaments we've been to, recruiting letters and emails to our unsigned juniors have pretty much stopped coming. 4. Non-JVDA juniors have been seen at qualifiers by college coaches 2-3 or more times already. 5. College coaches have told me that they will make offers to the kids that they have been able to see play multiple times, not the ones that they'll only be able to watch once at the year-end JVDA event in June. Other thoughts regarding the JVDA's goals: 6. As a parent in a JVDA club and also the family bookkeeper, I can assure you that we are spending just as much money on this year as previous years -- it did not reduce our costs. 7. The season is only a few days shorter. This year we end on June 30. Last year it was July 7. 8. One of JVDA's bones of contention was that they send the money to USAV and get no representation - essentially no vote or voice. 9. I send the money to my club and get no representation - no vote or voice was taken from the parents whether our club should join the boycott.

Take a look at Rich Kerns new recruits for 2009 and Seniors next year at midwest colleges and there are not many positions still open. So I would not jump to any conclusion about JVDA hurting recruiting.

If you feel cheated out of exposure. Don't feel too bad because Our team got the shaft for two days. Parents weren't happy. First PM wave on Friday nite at a far and way high school and then another far and away across town on the third day. Saw couples of recuriters for a second but they didn't stick around long enough to see more than one game. I guess they were in the hurry to get back to Cashman center. I would suggest to have everyone play at one location, Since there were too many teams, Maybe have two different weekends. First weekend for Open division and second weekend for Clubs.

So I would not jump to any conclusion about JVDA hurting recruiting. I don't want to split hairs, but you jumped to the conclusion that Midwest girls want to play college ball in the Midwest. Not true -- many of them want to go east, south or to Cali -- those are the coaches that are not coming to the JVDA events. So maybe I should further refine my post to say that JVDA girls wanting to play far away are not being seen by college coaches.

Registered Member Posts: 4 (03/31/08 2:09 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	dreamingbig- of all the posts i have read regarding the jvda i found yours the most enlightening- being that you are a parent who is paying the bills and driving the miles. it occurred to me long ago that some of the jvda's issues, and their 'solutions' to those issues were empty; but to read your experiences-along with the parent on another board who broke down what they actually spent to go to the dells- should be eye opening. it seems like some are so invested emotionally invested in the jvda they will always find a way to spin it as a positive. i for one would like to see someone spin your comments-and the other parent i mentioned as positive for club vb.........with regard to jvda not hurting recruiting, again, people are being very shortsighted.will it hurt the programs that have both the monetary and personpower resources to cover both the jvda AND usav events? no, but how many programs have those resources- not nearly as many as people think- and that is at the DI level. i have spent time working with both NCAA DI, II and III schools and i can tell you that the vast majority do not- the result being fewer opportunities to be seen by a greater number of coaches. a good recruiter will do their job, but this makes it harder. again, not in the best interest of our vb student-athletes....

I have coaches that found us - they always do. But those coaches are also already watching some of the girls on the team and I expect them to find us. I was talking about the walk bys! The ones where you hope you catch their attention just because you are in the same spot at the same time. A school maybe the player doesn't know about yet but might be a great fit for. I am not really overly concerned about most of the girls. They are doing their home work and are being seen and evaluated. Some have offers or are about to. I wasn't only talking about my team here, as gotsand said, they were off site a couple of the days which is too bad. I just hope they take this into consideration for future events. The coach I ran into at the end of the day just mentioned that she didn't get there to see us on Sunday morning, and that she knew we were off site on Saturday and was busy watching others and didn't get over to the HS. Don't worry, she will see us in LVille or Chicago, or the head coach will. They know where to find us.
