It seems that folks are implying that winning a qualifier at the club level automatically defines you as an open team. Not true at all. Just because you get
spanked by a team in club does not necessarily make the team that spanked you able to compete for an open bid. Maybe it means that they are just a better team
and pulling that team out of the club level simply lowers the playing level of club and also possibly eliminating the better team's opportunity to play at
nationals all together.
If a team finishes top 50% that makes them 14th at worst, in a 28 team field. I believe that the open bid only trickles down to 6th place. If you consider that not all those teams playing open are true open teams, the top 50% doesn't seem to be a fair dividing line.
We have finished 5th in a club qualifier and 7th in an Open qualifer. The 7th place finish was mostly due to a weaker field. The 5th place was the result of losing a tie breaker in the qtrs to the eventual winner who happened to play a team in the final that we beat the previous day 25-18, 25-16. Yeah we were kicking ourselves. Sometimes it comes down to seeding and falling in the right spot at the right time. But always comes down to bringing your A game every match. This is probably a team that is upper echelon of the overall club field and middle of the road to lower half of the open field nation wide. So we take our chances in both. I don't think any of the girls on that team want to give up a trip to Dallas in July so that another weaker team that considers itself a true club team can go in their place.
