Registered Member Posts: 43 (03/27/08 9:43 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	wat is fun about a team bust'n their butts all weekend and facing the NY Yankees first match of Gold? or better yet, winning the pool both days then seeing a Open team in the Challenge match to move on into Gold, what is fun about that? so ya must be saying its the 'real' club teams fault for not pony'n up for the match? what USAV has dun is given the chance for the Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees of the volleyball world to go down anna play in AA farm ball, lay down smack on teams then award t'im with something called an American or National JO Bid. in the end for what? da answer is ego. a clubs ego for the next year they go advertise all around THEY went to JO's and how well THEY did winning this or that. I think finishing in the top 5 of two qualifers is pretty impressive, but you sound as though you don't think your team can do it, maybe that's why they haven't. So you will step up when you qualify in Club??? Maybe you would have already qualified if you would have stepped up then??? It's great that your team has worked hard, but I don't think you can say you have worked harder than someone else.....how do you know you have? You don't have the luxery of getting 2-4 bids....what does this mean? All everyone talks about is Open teams, Open pools, who's doing what in Open.....not much talk about the Club teams. So I am just saying, if you think Open is all that, then play it, and leave the Club bid to the Club teams.......thats all. There are obvious Open teams that play Club. What I'm saying is welcome to the real world. Not everyone wins. The bigger/faster/smarter get ahead in life. There are winners and losers (gasp!). The beauty is....on the court, the rules are mostly the same for both teams, unlike perhaps life....

If you find a better team in your division, rejoice. You get to test yourself and see what you need to work on. If you're hunting for a bid and drop down, you ultimately don't get much out of it. If play one of these teams, you tend to get more from the experience than they do. The "we sent x teams to JOs" argument is handy for sales purposes, but that's about it. And the non-open divisions feature plenty of good competition. So step up your play and see what it's like.

My own experience is in So. Cal where teams ranked in the bottom half of Division 1 (say #13 or #14 overall in the region) often have a tough decision to make. If they play in the Open division they have only a very slim chance of qualifying and they might just miss out on getting one of the regional club division bids because of their ranking in the region. These teams are often stronger than the teams that typically play in the Club division at qualifiers. So should they take their chances and play in the Open division or enter the Club division where they might be viewed as sandbagging, but it might be their only legitimate shot at going to JOs? I agree that the best system would eliminate all distinctions between Club and Open at qualifiers and award bids to each division based on your final placement (i.e., the first three places get an Open bid, the next three get National, etc.). Of course, the problem with that is it is difficult to run a tournament with that many teams. Perhaps the best approach would be to have two division at Qualifiers (one for teams that want to go to JOs in any division and those that do not). That might make the number of teams in each division more manageable and provide a division for teams that really don't have a chance of qualifying for either Club or Open.

At this time we are a top club team, and that is what bothers you. You would rather have the teams finishing ahead of you to step aside and move up level so you can be where. We come from a small region and play up an age group. Our region only gets one regional national bid per age group. Some regions such as North Country, Great lakes, SO & NO Cal get get 4-5 bids per their region. So if those teams are finishing in the top 10 of a qualifier in but don't get a bid they almost a 100% certainty they will receive one from there region. For a team like ours from a small region we need every chance we can get. If our club team or any other club in our region qualifies at a NQ then that gives another teasm in our region a chance to go to JO's. At this time we are playing right at our compitition level we should be at. What I am posting here on our team, probably applies to dozens of other top club teams competing at qualifiers.

All that is true, and we wouldn't be having this conversation if USAV hadn't offered the option of teams being divided by divisions. Since they do offer that option, it would be helpful if they would establish some guidelines to go with it. Under the current guidelines a team can play in a Regional Power League type event and beat every team in the Open division in the area, then play in the Club division at their first Qualifier. If clubs were doing this because they are uncertain of their teams ability it would be more acceptable, but that is not always the case. Instead what we are seeing is a trend for certain clubs to use this method to ensure that their teams get JO bids year after year. I understand that this is not against the rules, and until it is there will always be clubs that operate this way.
