The BigSouth web site indicates the teams playing schedules will be posted the Tuesday evening prior to the tourney.

Big South EMERGENCY UPDATE #7 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Here's my response to alvbfan:
SCVA: plays a big tourney in Las Vegas NCVA: was in Sacramento, now in Reno PNQ: thinking about Seattle over Spokane Lone Star: Dallas, Houston and Austin Crossroads: Was in KC for several years while convention center refurbished MEQ: youngsters in Columbus this year not Indy NEQ -- In Pittsburgh last year not Baltimore. It is neither unusual nor valid to criticize a tournament because it chooses to locate other than where the Qualifier Director and host club resides. In light of the act of nature that knocked out the GWCC, the better focus it seems to me is the amazing responsiveness of the Big South to the crisis and the swift action they have taken to see that the event, however changed, goes on this year. The skeptic out there will point to the profit motive as reason for moving so swiftly, but is that really germane? The important thing is the tournament is working round the clock to save the event for itself and ALL of those planning to attend. That is praiseworthy regardless of anything else. |

I often return from covering a qualifier to a post or two that asks where the wrap up story is.
It doesn't matter that I traveled 8 hours on Thursday yet still wrote a 4,000 word story, worked 16 hour days all weekend covering the tournament and writing stories and posting updates on the message board or traveled all day Monday, exhausted, back to my wife and three small children. WHERE'S THE STORY? Likewise with Big South -- if you consider the magnitude of the problem, just a little more patience and understanding is called for. It used to be, just a short time ago, that you didn't learn who or where you were playing until the coaches meeting the night before. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bid farewell for now to work on the MEQ wrap up.

Great Job at Big South! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I am so impressed with the constant updates and efforts being put into keeping this event moving forward. Smalltimer needs a reality grip. To criticize the
fact that you don't know where you are playing on Tuesday is just petty. If you don't know where you are playing by the time the coaches meeting
occurs on Thursday, THEN you can complain. Till then, focus on the big picture. The nature of ANY tournament of size means that changes happen right to the
very last even under the best of circumstances. Big South still stands in my mind as one of the best run and most pleasant qualifiers.

I can't even imagine the amount of work that has gone into relocating a tournament of this size. The tornado hit just a few days ago.
To anyone who chooses to criticize the tournament organizers: You should walk a mile in their shoes. These people have obviously done a remarkable job, and I'm sure they've been working around the clock. To any club or team that is thinking about cancelling out of the tournament: A natural disaster hit Atlanta. It will not be the same, for sure, but in some ways, it can be better. Great things spring out of adversity and less-than-ideal conditions. But what that takes is people who pick up the pieces and band together. |

As someone who had to re-schedule a 40 court national tournament on the fly, I can sympathize with the Big South people. This is not your typical local 2-3
court tournament that you can change in a few minutes. With multiple sites, do you want to volunteer 12+ hours to run results over back to the main site to be
posted? As I recall, Atlanta traffic is one of the wosrt in the country. Try spending 2 hours just getting from one side of Atlanta to the other.

smalltimer212 wrote: You must be kidding, right? What part of "natural disaster" don't you understand? It is obvious Big South will need to switch to multiple playing sites. Therefore, first they must secure enough venues to handle the number of courts needed. Then based on the various sizes and the number of teams in each division, they must decide the optimum allocation of venues to the divisions. If they (re)scheduled based on the seeding for all teams entered, then had some drop out today (and I have no knowledge if any have), they have to reassign pools. If any division ends up split across multiple venues, then pool shifts could easily translate into playing at a different venue. Under the circumstances, I'm sure the Big South staff has plenty to keep them occupied without spending time doing something they may only have to redo later. As JTawa noted, until the last couple of years you never knew where you played until Thursday night. If I remember correctly, Big South was one of the first to be progressive and start releasing seeding information earlier. Just last month, the Las Vegas Invitational used 17 different playing sites. Although the list of sites to be used was known, I don't think it was known by Tuesday ahead of the event where any given team would play. And they weren't even dealing with the mind boggling logistics of coordinating the massive restructure of this event just days before court setup must begin. I have no doubt Big South will be able to pull this off -- they have always been an incredibly well organized event. Will it be less convenient than all 100+ courts at a single venue? Of course. But I for one plan on thanking any staff member I see during the event for the hurculean effort they must be putting out this week. |

Hey Tony...here I am....just a little fly on the wall...no fly swatters please. Big South will be a life lesson for us all....patience and understanding for
all....I am sure the organizers will do their best to not have us traveling all over Atlanta...see another life lesson...faith in others. Remember: Our kids
are watching us...let's be good role models on handling the unexpected.

Just a quick history lesson - the big south was at the Tampa convention center - then they used Orlando and Tampa. This is there forth year in Atlanta. We all
love having it under one roof - but I am still going to enjoy the big south.

What would it matter if you DID know where you will be playing? Are you going there today?
Now for something relevent. EMERGENCY UPDATE #8 State of Atlanta Update Through different emails we have received, it seems that some of you are concerned about the conditions here in Atlanta. We are not sure if those concerns have been generated from news clips, etc. But we wanted to address some of those concerns immediately. You should not expect chaos in Atlanta. We have been in the city since very early Sunday morning. Upon our arrival at the Omni, you could see the path of destruction that had taken place. However, we were actually very surprised at the condition of the hotel as much clean up had already been done. As of today, the debris around Atlanta has almost been completely removed. On the whole if you did not know what had happened you would be none the wiser. Keep in mind, this path of debris, etc was extremely small. Only a very small portion of the city was effected -- the convention corridor. The GWCC and immediate campus has obvious damage. But those areas are not open to the public and thus will not be affecting us. The Omni is in complete operation in the North Tower hosting many in-house conventions that were planned. The only signs of the storm are the panels of glass that have been replaced with wood. Our stay here has not been effected in the least. The restaurant is in full swing, as is the CNN Center Food Court. Within the city there are still a couple of streets that have been roped off to allow for efficient movement of the repairs taking place. This has only been a traffic concern in the early day as people arrive for work. We are expecting for that to have no impact on our attendees because Friday will be a holiday for most. Then we have the weekend ahead of us and most everyone will be at home. There has been no increase in crime, there are really no noticeable effects that you will experience unless you walk to simply view the Omni, the CCN Center or the GWCC. Atlanta is ready to host you in grand style. There are no reasons for concerns regarding safety and we truly believe that travel within the city and the surrounding areas will not be a problem during this holiday weekend. |
