Found this mention of the GWCC

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/03/15/scenes_0315.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab
On one of the video blurbs from CNN I heard the reporter saying something about some walls being heavily damaged at the GWCC. Sending good thoughts to everyone in that region. Hopefully the biggest problem they have down there is structural damage and not major inuries. |

This is from the other thread on this... http://prepvolleyball.yuku.com/topic/2065 This is from the Bigsouth website....
We can confirm that there has been extensive damage in downtown Atlanta with the GWCC and surrounding area being effected. WE DO NOT have a final damage
assessment yet. There are emergency meetings being held this morning to determine what the course of action will be for our event and others. DO NOT call in
as we cannot handle the volume of calls and emails. We will keep you informed with as much information as possible.

I little reassurance from THS-
TOURNAMENT CANCELLATION INSURANCE THS has purchased a "Tournament Cancellation Insurance" policy from Lloyd's of London, that protects you and/or your team from hotel cancellation charges in the event the tournament is canceled for any reason*. The policy will pay 100% of the contracted room & tax charges to the hotel for all hotel bookings for this tournament through THS. In the case the tournament is canceled, THS will work directly with the insurance company and the hotel in which we booked you, to ensure that all hotel charges are paid, protecting you from those penalties. This information will be documented in the hotel agreement or confirmation we send you. * The only exception to this is if the tournament is canceled due to lack of enough teams/participants applying to hold the tournament. Note, the cancellation of an age group or field complex by the tournament falls under this exception. The entire event must be canceled, not a portion there of. |

Remember: the GWCC is HUGE and on many levels. Depending on what was booked for that weekend, I'm betting there will be some space available.
Best of luck in that endeavor! |

48 hours to check it all out so this may be it for a couple days.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #3 Facility & Hotel Update HOTELS -- We can pretty much confirm for you now that the only hotel that will have to make changes will be the Omni. PLEASE DO NOT (call) THE OMNI DIRECTLY. We will be working through the Omni and all of the other hotels to make the necessary changes. We do not know how many rooms will need to be moved yet. That will not be known until the conclusion of the day today. THS will work directly with the Omni and all of the other downtown hotels to arrange for the changes and then contact you if your room block is effective. FACILITY -- The plan at the moment is to move forward with the event. The GWCC has informed us that the final damage assessment by the engineers and risk management team will not be completed for another 48 hours. We obviously want to give them as much time as possible to make sure the building is structurally sound, etc, etc... If we receive additional information about the building that lets us know a change in hosting the event is planned we will once again contact you immediately through every avenue of communication we have at our hands. We are also researching other facilities in the near-by Atlanta area should some courts need to be moved. That's all we have for now. Thank you again for your patience. |

so what happens if.... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
So what happens if Big South goes on, but in a limited capacity.....not being able to host all age groups or not as many teams per age group they have
currently accepted. Will those bids become open bids or will the bids be passed on to the remaining qualifiers?
Apparently Big South may be able to secure other playing sites, but may not be able to accomodate the number of teams it currently has registered (at least that is what I get from the latest update)....that is why I ask. |

"volleyball convention threatened"
|
From the Atlanta Constitution Journal. Their web site also has a good aerial photo of the holes in the roof of the convention
center....
GWCC cancels two events, volleyball convention threatened The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/16/08 The Georgia World Congress Center will not be open to the public on Monday and has pulled the plug on two upcoming meetings at the downtown convention facility. The GWCC will remain closed to everyone but staff as it continues to recover from the weekend's devastating storms, including an apparent direct hit by Friday night's tornado, said Katy Pando, a spokeswoman for the building. Officials with the facility were assessing the damage Sunday and should have a better idea of the overall effect of the storms on Monday, she said. The storms damaged several sections of the massive building's roof, rain water washed down walls and burst pipes soaked carpets. Gov. Sonny Perdue planned to tour the state-owned building Sunday afternoon. Because of the problems, a job fair scheduled Monday for the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been postponed, Pando said. The Atlanta Fund Raising Summit, which was scheduled for the convention on Tuesday, has been canceled, she said. Attendance was expected to be about 1,000 people for the CDC meeting and 125 for the fund raising summit. Pando did not know the status of the Big South Qualifier, which is set to begin at the GWCC on Wednesday and have an economic impact of $18 million. About 38,000 volleyball players are expected for the event, which runs through March 23. The International Window Coverings Expo follows March 27-31. Attendance is expected to be about 8,000 people with an economic impact of $8.5 million. The damage assessment also will help the GWCC determine when exhibitors can retrieve their belongings from three meetings that were underway when the storm hit, Pando said. Exhibits for the Atlanta Home Show, Hinman Dental and Southeastern Conference Fanfare are still in the building, the fourth largest convention center in the country. |

The insurance commissioner of GA estimated today that there is approx $100 Million in damages to the Georgia World Congress Center
My hats off to the host if they manage to pull this off - there are quite a few convention centers in the Atlanta, Marrietta, Guinnett areas, maybe they will - hoping for the best! |

hotels and airlines | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Most everyone is protected on the hotels this is no-ones fault and the hotels will understand and cancel with no fees. Airlines can be a different story they
will probably waive the cancel fee but each teams player will just have a credit in the ticket holders name. That can cause a problem unless you can use that
ticket when you book for JO's.
So I can thinking because of the cost in revenue for the Big South, The parents and the Clubs this tournament will happen. I can not see them canceling it, Everyone will just lose too much money. A city as large as Atlanta should be able to handle this tournament . |

I agree and hope the Dagostino's pull it off - gonna be tough, last year there were something like 114 nets - this year slightly fewer teams, but still
likely need space for 100 plus nets - that is lot of gym/convention space. Logisitically, breaking it up would be a coordinators nightmare, but if anyone can
do it, I'm sure these host can!

It would be easier to delay it by couple of weeks. It seems one of the GWCC should be ready enough, along with hotels getting repairs. I doubt that 100 plus courts can be in a combined set of other places, plus the folks now driving all over the city, not all the club age groups would be held in the same facility, so when you re-pool, there will be driving involved. Lets not forget the ref assignments.... Plus the court set up starts on Tuesday or Wednesday, the alternate places will need to be identified soon. I think the airlines and hotels would understand the delay.

A delay of a couple weeks could put alot of teams in conflict with other qualifiers...Lone Star and Nothern Lights....I hope they can pull this off...a shame
it happened, but boy am I glad it happened a week earlier and not over the qualifier weekend.

Rescheduling sounds logical--but it is in no way possible: (at the gwcc)

Read what they have written. They have no intentions of rescheduling the event, and it would be a total disaster even if they wanted to. While it may be an
inconvenience, this won't be the first time a Qualifier is held at multiple sites. That is far less a nightmare than loosing a HUGE amount of revenue by
trying to reschedule.

I guess they'll earn their $5 per day per person admission by having to scramble and find alternate locations.

I'm sure if they contacted some commercial real estate persons - they might could find one or two large empty commercial buildings with high enough roofs
to help supplement the convention centers in the area - just have the lighting to worry about.
