Nice job posting the reality of college athletics....players definitely need to think about their return on investment (scholarship $ vs. time requirements).

Taken from athleticscholarships.net . "Women's volleyball is classed as a "head count" sport and 12 FULL
RIDE SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded by each college in division 1 and 8 in division 2. The NAIA allows 12. This works out to about 7500 volleyball scholarships that
are available for girls."
In this sense the girls playing volleyball are very lucky. Considering men's volleyball gets only 4. Other sports like mens baseball have to split scholarships. The Times article's do make a good point. Just look at any college roster and you will see how many underclassmen fill it out. Very few Seniors stick it out and play. It would be interesting to know what percentage quit because of injury and what percent just burn out. |

Actually, D-II Volleyball is non-headcount sport and the scholarships can be spread over the entire team. The limit is 8, but many teams are below 4.

But not all the DI programs are fully funded to give out 12 full-ride scholarships are they? That statement could be easily misread by someone thinking that
every DI school has 12 full-ride schoarships to give away....some DIs don't give athletic scholarships.

The Limit for NAIA is actually 8 not 12; but 'good students' don't count against the limit of 8.
The below information is from The NAIA Official Handbook: http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/naia/member-services/pubs/handbook/2006-07_Official_Handbook.pdf (p.119) F. Academic Exemption Academically gifted students will be exempted from the aid counted by use of the following criteria. A. Aid to continuing students with a 3.60 cumulative GPA or top 10% of class will not count against the limits. B. Only one-half of the aid to continuing students with a 3.30 - 3.59 cumulative GPA or upper 11%-25% class ranking will count against the limits. C. Aid to entering freshmen will be exempted upon achievement of minimum SAT/ACT scores (1050/23=half exemption, 1200/27=full exemption) or cumulative high school GPA (3.50- 3.74=half exemption, 3.75-4.0=full exemption) or high school class rank (top 11%-25%=half exemption, top 10%=full exemption). The following guidelines should be used in academic factoring. 1. Institutions may use GPA from either the seventh or final high school semester for incoming freshmen... 5. For continuing students, use the cumulative GPA immediately preceding the fall term of the year being reported. ... G. Upper Limits for Institutional Aid … (all sports are listed here) ...Volleyball 8 ... This is great for incoming frosh NAIA VB girls, since most are also great students, but some NAIA VB programs don't have enough money to give them "full rides" just for VB. However, most NAIA schools also offer academic money in addition to the VB money! With over 430 NAIA schools all across the US, it's a great alternative to check out (vs lower-level DI or DII) if you are a serious VB girl who is not in the Fab 50! TH |

We might need to check the numbers of NAIA schools sponsoring volleyball again...it's actually 242 schools. |

Sorry, when you are my age, you shouldn't rely on memory.
According to pablo ranking: 245 NAIA colleges play VB. (which equates to approximately 3000 players--some schools have large JV squads in addition to their varsity) TH

I admit it would be fantastic if down the line my daughter received some scholarship money for Volleyball, but that is not the primary reason we put the hours
and dollars into club volleyball. The reason we help her do it is because she loves the game, loves the camraderie and most of all loves the competition.
Sounds very corny but the lessons she learns while competing will serve her well when it really counts- in the college classroom, in her job search and
throughout her career.
It has been my experience that some of the best employees we hire at my fortune 100 company usually have had some background in either high school or college athletics. These people have learned what it means to compete, know that they are going to be held accountable for results, and more often than not put in the time to make themselves as good as they can be. If my daughter learns these lesson from club volleyball than I view it as money VERY well spent! |

How many parents have you spoken with that have been mislead by clubs and/or programs with the belief that their athlete will be recruited?
This is a great dose of reality for all parents and athletes playing in competitive programs. Perhaps the value is in the commitment, dedication, developing leaders and creating close friendships.

In my experience, clubs are very accurate in the common statement "There is a place in college volleyball for every girl who wants to play." I
firmly believe that statement is true. The problem is how that gets interpreted by parents and the girl herself. That statement does not imply scholarship
money or level of play/skill needed (DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, JC, etc.), and that is where the misunderstanding begins. So many think that broad cautionary
statements about the realities of recruiting do not apply to them, and they are often disappointed and sometimes angry when the DI offer doesn't come. If
they are honest with themselves, and if playing volleyball in college is a priority, they will seek a realistic perspective on where they fit in and pursue
appropriate college athletic choices. There may not be money at a DIII, but if they are open to the idea, they may be able to be an outstanding athlete in a
competitive, supportive program while getting an exceptional education.
I have met very few coaches/club directors who mislead girls who discuss and hear openly what level they think they can play in college. I have met a lot of parents who think these same coaches/directors don't know what they are talking about. There is a place for every girl to play. Only she can decide if that place fits her dream. |
