OK---as I"m misinformed I"m taking my post out---but still trying to figure out why "uncle joe" can't donate the entire dues for "suzy vball player" as a write off for his corporation???? Is there a difference between this donation or soliciting donations for a scholarship program??? Our club does offer scholarships too all on an as needed basis. Does not matter if the player is on a regional or travel team.

earmark trouble | ||

I believe that a club may offer scholarship or aid as long as it is available across the board. Fund raising/ soliciting donations is also but I believe that donations "earmarked" for a particular player is the sticky wicket |

earmark = no tax deduction
|
Donations made to a section 501(c)(3) organization that were earmarked for the benefit of a private individual/athlete would never be deductible. (Otherwise, wouldn't we all be making donations rather than paying club dues?) The "no deduction" rule would apply whether or not the donor was related to the intended recipient. |

I take it that fundraisers (like selling cookie dough), with what is earned going to the club for the benefit of the player that sold the dough, is okay? It
would seem to be, given the individual could earn the money and then pay it to the club, but who knows given that the NCAA is the only organization with
wackier rules than the IRS.

Club sponsoring certain player? How this work with NCAA rule?

I remember speaking with a well known college coach earlier in the year and this question came up. He mentioned that it might be against NCAA rules for a clubs to sponsor players because Clubs directors might only sponsor players that will be beneficial to its elite status. This sponsorship service won't be available to all players but only the elite. Players with parents who can and able to afford club fee but sway to play for certain club because its free. |

How to find the article?
|
I use the Advanced Search features, and I just went to "Articles" and sorted them once by title, and once by author and searched the list but was
unable to find the article John mentions: "Volleyball's Dirty Little Secret".
Anyone have a link to the article or know how to find it? |

Nor could I, but I have read it previously. I believe the basic message is that yes, this can be a problem, if the scholarship is not available to all-comers.
