1. Many venues make it impossible to get the coach's attention without yelling "point" or "score."
2. Other than lack of attention by the ref squad (most cases), I would add many mistakes are made on "play overs." I am always surprised the R1 does not make sure the score table has this correct, especially after a long discusion leading to the play over call.
3. When the R1 hears this going on, if they just check with the score table and confirm...

OK fine, so I can't figure out how to add a quote. That quote about two mothers duking it out at Big South is by far the most amusing thing I've ever read on this forum.

Swear to God I would personally ban my parents from my sporting events if they did that. I'd even ban dad for not breaking up melee.

If that isn't a cry for help I don't know what is.

BTW, there's a HUGE difference in abilities (both reffing and playing) between 15 and 12...

Although this thread has gotten quite bit off the path, I want to get back to the "point" of the thread. As a paid official, I have observed that there are three situations in a tournament when spectators are likely to yell "POINT!". The first is in pool play when their team is on the verge of either going home or getting knocked down to a lower division, so every point seems to be exceptionally important, so any delay in flipping the score, or any mistake by the flipper...

lol...who would bring the kids? I mean, half the parents would be banned and then we would have a third association for the loud group.

In reality, I have made a conscious decision to not yell about anything at any sport, not because I personally have a moral problem with yelling ( I mean heck, I'm a teacher, get real :-) ) but because it occurred to me that I was eventually going to die of a stroke or heart attack on some sideline somewhere and traumatize whole teams of budding...

maybe this forum could be the impetus for parents to start to become part of the solution.

Get off your can and volunteer to flip. Become an approved chaperone for the team and sit on the bench and be the team's scorekeeper.

Before anyone says a parent isn't allowed to be at the scorer's table I would certainly allow it if I'd had score problems earlier that day or with that work team. You think kids will sleep/text/iPod with an adult at the table? What?...

If you read my comment, you will note my "we" did not correlate to a specific side of the argument. It is clearly intended to say that "we" as a community, should discourage the behavior. As in, it is -my- opinion that -we- should.

That said, I do believe you are on the minority side of this particular debate, EI.

When, if ever, is it okay for a parent/spectator to yell out "point"/ "score" during a match? What do parents/specators do if they know the score is wrong but they don't yell out? Is there any tactful way to handle this issue or should parents/spectators just let the score be wrong?
