Probably a good idea to ask staffing questions for either program. You might want to know staffing assignments, are there outside coaches hired, player to coach ratio, limited enrollment, supervision and evening activity plans for resident campers. A program that can't respond to these questions before you commit time and $ probably isn't the experience you were looking for anyway. Volleysisters have had some great opportunities and a few so-so, but hey another day of playing vb...

I would have to disagree with the notion or the implication that the A1 and A2 Dev. camps are "just" camps. Any camp is "just" a camp. The issue with the developmental camps is there are only so many quality coaches free (time), to go around. I've had kids come back and say they learned ton and would do it again. I have had others that said it was a waste of time and they learned more at the regional camp the previous year. Some of the camps staff is going to be...

The A1 & A2 developmental camps are nothing more than camps, and very expensive ones at that. Most girls are much better off going to a camp at one of the colleges or universities, although some like to put the USAV camp designation on their v-ball resume. During this time of the year the girls are better off either enjoying some time off or building camraderie with their high school team mates.

Ask yourself this, "Is my daughter better off going to the Penn State camp...

It appears to me from looking through the literature that the Developmental camps possibly pay for the National teams expenses?

Pretty much everything pays for the National teams: these camps, youth dues, JO profits. The amount of revenue they get from the National teams does not come close to covering their cost. The USAV have added a lot of camps and probably profit in the last couple years. Hopefully, this will be the funding they need to not only support the...

While I am thankful that My daughter made the A1 team, It appears to me from looking through the literature that the Developmental camps possibly pay for the National teams expenses? Does it look that way to anyone else? From experience of other players we know, the camp is a great experience if you can afford the time away and financially. We're in TX and our child was only interested in the SE. We watched some team when they came to TX but we also watched some on video streaming - great tool!!

My understanding is the A1 and A2 camps are by invitation, and only open to HP tryout participants.

The Youth High Performance Training Camp YHPT is open to anyone that wants to attend the camp, including athletes that did not try-out for HP. The site directs player/parents to contact them...

Are the DA2 camps worthwhile? None are in our immediate area so travel to the camps would be lengthy and/or expensive. What time to these camps start and end (Morning or evening on first and last day)? This will make a huge difference in travel arrangements.

If your daughter is a rising sophomore, I would suggest the A1 camp this year and then college camps after that. My daughter did it that way and it helped her in two ways:

1. Exposure. Not the way you'd probably think...

- She worked out with girls at her skill level from all over the country - it forced her to look at her game more objectively.
- She made friends from all over and had some friendly faces at later qualifiers.

Hi verticalhelp - is your advice from personal experience?

Just curious to hear from anyone that attended a recent A1 Development camp.

The coach to athlete ratio is 1:8 - but I have no idea who the coaches are.
The fee covers lodging, food, and the camp - plus transportation to and from the airport and camp/if needed.
Our HP representative recommended the A1 camp over regional HP programs (not that we have one this year). He recommended...

I think I managed through all those numbers and found my kid. Please excuse my ignorance... Can anyone with more experience tell me: What's an Development A1 camp? What does a player who plays middle on her HS team and Outside on her club team do at given "position specific" camp? Is this camp better than other camps out there? They sure seem to be offering a lot of camp, to a lot of kids. I would expect my little freshman/sophomore to come home with some wicked new skills...

I guess they got the biggest group out of the way first. Per the USA HP site: A total of 2860 girls attended the 30 tryout sites offered this year. This included 698 in the Junior age group, 1381 in the Youth age group and 781 in the Select age group.
