How else do you think that they can go in and make changes over night, if they catch someone cheating and messing with the placement of teams?

Lone star is an awesome example of a qualifier using a "computer program" and then the human factor..ie my friend or my club team should be placed higher or in a different pool. How many ones were upset especially in 18 OPEN and 16 OPEN!

If you run the site (SUTP), coach or work at NL, and run the NL qualifier wouldn't that fall under conflict of interest? Specially if you are allowed to move teams around, in the best interest of the tournament, of course!

Magic-first post and pretty serious accusations...... Who is "they" that you refer too? What do you mean by "dont like the way the pools look"?

They sit at the computer and when they get the pools setup if they don't like the way they look they go in a change them. I believe somebody at Northern Lights is the one who is in charge of Sign up to play.

Interesting , if you look on sign up to play and try to find contact info on who runs the sight it's not available. Nor is the formula they use for seeding. Why is that? Something to hide SUTP? I can look up an find who is in charge of picking the NCAA basketball tourney. I can find the NCAA football BCS formula.

The exact criteria for the computer seeding needs to become public if it isn't already. Is this published somewhere? Who wrote the program that is currently being used in 2008? Of all the qualifiers, which are using this computer ranking method? Which are not?

Just because a team qualified in a previous tournament doesn't mean they are better than the other seeded teams in the next qualifier. I used simple logic in the past, three teams qualified so they should finish 1,2,3 and we will get a trickle down. Dosen't work that way. I have seen qualified teams that don't even make the Gold round the next time out.

I agree sometimes it looks like the teams are picked from a hat.

Sometimes the best teams don't have bids yet.

So, Front Range 16 Blue is seeded 5th overall and lacks a bid. This is one of the scariest teams out there and will be a favorite to medal if it reaches Open at...

I am still trying to figure out how they did the seeding for the 16 open at Northern Lights. There are 6 teams already qualified for Nationals. I don't claim to be a genius but why wouldn't you put 1 of the teams that are already qualified as a 1 seed and then put the last one in another pool? Currently they have 2 pools with 2 qualified teams and 2 pools with 1 qualified team. That leaves pool 5 with no qualified teams in it on the 1st day. Can anyone explain this?

Eye, your post is nonsensical. I don't think any of us are looking for a perfect world, and we know that seeding is an inexact science. And certainly bias should not enter into the equation.

Having said that, the seeding for some of these teams seems just idiotic. If a team finished in the top five in two open qualifiers already, how could they be seeded in the bottom 5 teams at Northern Lights?

Too many people look for that which cannot be found - a perfect world. This is not a new rodeo. The "powers that be" do their best and treye to do it with statistical data that precludes bias. It is an issue that has to be without regard to our perception of what we think is best. BTW, seeding a tournament after the event is easy.

Regardless of how the seeding is done, you still have to deal with teams that don't send in complete or accurate results.

This will always be the weak spot of any seeding or ranking process.

AFAIK, the Qualifiers are using a seeding program that was developed by the SUTP group. Ask them for their seeding criteria. I heard that one was that if you are an established top level club, your teams are seeded higher than a new club.

i know exactly what you mean my team WAVE was seeded 21st in spokane...but in the end we came out to win the tournament but we all were wondering how we ended up as such a low seed. The people told us that they had put it in alphabetical order from our region (SoCal) even though we had beat out all the other teams seeded ahead of us.

I wish USAV would publish the logic behind the seeding process ... there have been some really strange seeding at all the Qualifiers in the Open division. It is almost like they sometimes don't even look at results. IF anyone that has any inisght on how seeding is done, i would like to know.
